The name Gareb is derived from a Hebrew root meaning "scabby" or "rough," which may provide insight into the characteristics of the location or the individual associated with this name.

Gareb as a Location

Gareb is mentioned in the context of the city of Jerusalem. In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet speaks of the future expansion and restoration of Jerusalem, and Gareb is noted as a landmark in this prophecy. Jeremiah 31:39 states, "The measuring line will once again stretch out straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn toward Goah." This reference suggests that Gareb was a notable hill or area on the outskirts of Jerusalem, marking the boundary of the city's expansion. The exact location of Gareb is not definitively known today, but it is generally considered to be in the vicinity of ancient Jerusalem, possibly to the northwest.

Gareb as a Person

In addition to being a geographical location, Gareb is also the name of one of King David's warriors. In 2 Samuel 23:38 , Gareb is listed among the "mighty men" who served David: "Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite." This mention is part of a larger passage that details the exploits and valor of David's elite group of warriors, known as the "Thirty." Gareb's inclusion in this list indicates that he was a distinguished and valiant fighter, contributing to David's military successes. The parallel account in 1 Chronicles 11:40 also includes Gareb, affirming his role among David's mighty men.

Historical and Theological Significance

The references to Gareb, both as a location and as a person, hold significance in the biblical narrative. As a geographical marker, Gareb's mention in Jeremiah's prophecy underscores the theme of restoration and hope for Jerusalem, a city central to God's covenantal promises to Israel. The expansion of Jerusalem to include Gareb symbolizes the fulfillment of God's promises and the future prosperity of His people.

As a person, Gareb's role as one of David's mighty men highlights the importance of loyalty, bravery, and military prowess in the establishment and defense of the Israelite kingdom. David's mighty men were instrumental in securing his reign and expanding the territory of Israel, and Gareb's inclusion in this elite group reflects his dedication and skill as a warrior.

In summary, Gareb serves as both a geographical and personal reference within the biblical text, contributing to the broader narrative of God's faithfulness to His people and the establishment of His kingdom through David.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Gareb
a scab
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Gareb
(scabby), one of the heroes of David's army.
