gathered<MH622> together as one<MH259> person<MH376> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Then Jeshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Jozadak<MH3087> and his brothers<MH251> the priests<MH3548>, and Zerubbabel<MH2216> the son<MH1121> of Shealtiel<MH7597> and his brothers<MH251>, rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> and built<MH1129> the altar<MH4196> of the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> to offer<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> on it, as it is written<MH3789> in the Law<MH8451> of Moses<MH4872>, the man<MH376> of God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So they set<MH3559> up the altar<MH4196> on its foundation<MH4350>, because<MH3588> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>they were terrified<MH367> of the peoples<MH5971a> of the lands<MH776>; and they offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> on it to the LORD<MH3068>, burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> morning<MH1242> and evening<MH6153>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>They also celebrated<MH6213a> the Feast<MH2282> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Booths<MH5521>, as it is written<MH3789>, and <i>offered</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>the prescribed number<MH4557> of burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> daily<MH3117>, according to the ordinance<MH4941>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>as each<MH3117> day<MH3117> required<MH1697>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>and afterward<MH310, 3651> <i>there was</i> a continual<MH8548> burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>, also for the new<MH2320> moons<MH2320> and for all<MH3605> the appointed<MH4150> festivals<MH4150> of the LORD<MH3068> that were consecrated<MH6942>, and from everyone<MH3605> who offered<MH5068> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>voluntary<MH5071> offering<MH5071> to the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>From the first<MH259> day<MH3117> of the seventh<MH7637> month<MH2320> they began<MH2490c> to offer<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> to the LORD<MH3068>, but the foundation<MH3245> of the temple<MH1964> of the LORD<MH3068> had not been laid<MH3245>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then they gave<MH5414> money<MH3701> to the masons<MH2672> and carpenters<MH2796>, and food<MH3978>, drink<MH4960>, and oil<MH8081> to the Sidonians<MH6722> and the Tyrians<MH6876> to bring<MH935> cedar<MH730> wood<MH6086> from Lebanon<MH3844> to the sea<MH3220> at Joppa<MH3305>, according to the permission<MH7558> they had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>from Cyrus<MH3566> king<MH4428> of Persia<MH6539>. <p class="hdg">Temple Restoration Begun</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now in the second<MH8145> year<MH8141> of their coming<MH935> to the house<MH1004> of God<MH430> at Jerusalem<MH3389>, in the second<MH8145> month<MH2320>, Zerubbabel<MH2216> the son<MH1121> of Shealtiel<MH7597>, Jeshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Jozadak<MH3087>, and the rest<MH7605> of their brothers<MH251> the priests<MH3548> and the Levites<MH3881>, and all<MH3605> who came<MH935> from the captivity<MH7628b> to Jerusalem<MH3389>, began<MH2490c> <i>the work</i> and appointed<MH5975> the Levites<MH3881> who were twenty<MH6242> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> and upward<MH4605> to oversee<MH5329> the work<MH4399> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Jeshua<MH3091> <i>with</i> his sons<MH1121> and brothers<MH251> stood<MH5975> united<MH259> <i>with</i> Kadmiel<MH6934> and his sons<MH1121>, the sons<MH1121> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Judah<MH3063> <i>and</i> the sons<MH1121> of Henadad<MH2582> <i>with</i> their sons<MH1121> and brothers<MH251> the Levites<MH3881>, to oversee<MH5329> the workmen<MH4399> in the temple<MH1004> of God<MH430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now when the builders<MH1129> had laid<MH3245> the foundation<MH3245> of the temple<MH1964> of the LORD<MH3068>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>the priests<MH3548> stood<MH5975> in<MH3847> their apparel<MH3847> with trumpets<MH2689>, and the Levites<MH3881>, the sons<MH1121> of Asaph<MH623>, with cymbals<MH4700>, to praise<MH1984b> the LORD<MH3068> according<MH5921> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>directions<MH3027> of King<MH4428> David<MH1732> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And they sang<MH6031b>, praising<MH1984b> and giving<MH3034> thanks<MH3034> to the LORD<MH3068>, <i>saying,</i> “For <i>He is</i> good<MH2896a>, for His favor<MH2617a> <i>is</i> upon Israel<MH3478> forever<MH5769>.” And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> shouted<MH7321> with a great<MH1419> shout<MH8643> of<MH8643> joy<MH8643> when they praised<MH1984b> the LORD<MH3068>, because<MH5921> the foundation<MH3245> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> was laid<MH3245>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Yet many<MH7227a> of the priests<MH3548> and Levites<MH3881> and heads<MH7218> of fathers’<MH1> <i>households,</i> the old<MH2205> men<MH2205> who<MH834> had seen<MH7200> the first<MH7223> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>temple<MH1004>, wept<MH1058> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963> when the foundation<MH3245> of this<MH2088> house<MH1004> was laid<MH3245> before their eyes<MH5869>, while many<MH7227a> shouted<MH8643> aloud<MH7311, 6963> for joy<MH8057>, <span
