The beloved Audible mystery series Mistletoe Murders was released on the Hallmark Channel on October 31, and we recently announced that hit titles like The Prophecy, Hot White Heist, Oracle, and James Patterson’s Daniel X: Genesis are in development with Amazon MGM Studios. That’s because Audible Originals, with their cinematic-quality sound design, riveting storylines and top-tier talent, make perfect sense for adaptation.

Put another way: “It’s TV for the ears,” says Audible’s Head of TV and Film, Jackie Levine. She joined us in 2022 to identify Audible Originals that are ripe for adaptation to the screen, then package and sell them to studios and production companies. To package something for adaptation, Levine calls upon her deep experience as a film and TV producer to conceptualize the show or movie—what is the tone and what is it comparable to?—and then communicate that to a showrunner, writer and/or director to get them onboard and see what they want to bring to it. Sometimes studios have filmmakers and showrunners in mind, and sometimes Levine pulls from her own deep contact list to bring in someone exciting, like a hot director, to be part of her pitch.

Once a project is sold, Levine stays across it to ensure “quality control,” confirming that what goes onscreen represents Audible and our creators well. “Some of the creators like to remain involved, which is great, and others are more hands-off,” she says, “so I update all of our creators about the progress we are making.” In the last two years, Levine has packaged nearly 40 projects across the US, Canada and the UK, and her team has started expanding into Germany, Australia and Latin America, as well.

So what is Levine looking for in an audio project to pitch for TV and film? It’s a little more complicated than merely picking the best-selling titles. “Although I take note of titles that perform well on Audible, it doesn’t always mean they’re right for adaptations,” she explains. Levine meets regularly with TV and film executives to understand the content they’re interested in buying, so she knows if a studio is looking for, say, more female-focused romantic comedies.

“I’m generally looking for high-concept ideas that can be sold in a quick ‘elevator’ pitch,” says Levine. “I focus on compelling stories, multi-dimensional characters, and how can we put this together and sell it. And it’s even better if there’s high-level talent involvement in our audio and they want to remain involved.”

It goes without saying that it’s intensely hard to get a film or TV series greenlit (when a project moves from ideation to officially studio-approved production). But Levine reports that when it comes to pitching studios, audio-first productions have a huge advantage to more traditional TV and film pitches. “It allows you to go into the room with a proof of concept,” she explains. “First, because we can give a sense of a title’s built-in audience from how it performs on Audible, and second, because the series comes alive for them as they listen.”

Instead of trying to find time to read pitches and scripts, buyers can throw on their headphones and listen while they’re commuting or at the gym—just like Audible customers do—and perhaps more easily grasp the potential for the project. “Our content comes alive for our customers, and we want the buyers to have the same experience and get excited,” says Levine. “It’s also why many authors are excited to work with us to make Audible Originals—because of the possibility of adaptation.”

Levine says the day to day is not so different from when she worked in TV and film as a producer, packaging and selling, “pushing things up the hill to get them made.” The difference, she says, is that “at Audible, I have way more great content at my hands, which is very exciting.”

And Levine lives for the successes. Whenever she sells a project, “I’m thrilled! It’s extremely rewarding to take the incredible work done by Audible’s creators and content and production teams, and help get it adapted. I feel really grateful that I get to do this.”

Related

Inside Audible

Inside AudibleOctober 29, 2024
How Sadaf Kazmi Went From Audible Listener to Audible Leader

As Head of Creator and International Products, Sadaf Kazmi leads teams responsible for building the best possible experience for creators and listeners around the world. The beloved Audible mystery series *[Mistletoe Murders](https://www.audible.com/podcast/Mistletoe-Murders/B0BNLP3GPV)* was released on the Hallmark Channel on October 31, and we [recently announced](https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/the-prophecy-white-hot-heist-oracle-audible-amazon-mgm-studios-1235952000/) that hit titles like *[The Prophecy](https://www.audible.com/podcast/The-Prophecy/B09T94QHK6)*, *[Hot White Heist](https://www.audible.com/podcast/Hot-White-Heist/B095T2L8G6)*, *[Oracle](https://www.audible.com/pd/Oracle-Audiobook/B093883QL4)*, and James Patterson’s *[Daniel X: Genesis](https://www.audible.com/pd/Daniel-X-Genesis-Audiobook/B0B5FJSMK5)* are in development with Amazon MGM Studios. That’s because Audible Originals, with their cinematic-quality sound design, riveting storylines and top-tier talent, make perfect sense for adaptation. \n\nPut another way: “It’s TV for the ears,” says Audible’s Head of TV and Film, Jackie Levine. She joined us in 2022 to identify Audible Originals that are ripe for adaptation to the screen, then package and sell them to studios and production companies. To package something for adaptation, Levine calls upon her deep experience as a film and TV producer to conceptualize the show or movie—what is the tone and what is it comparable to?—and then communicate that to a showrunner, writer and/or director to get them onboard and see what they want to bring to it. Sometimes studios have filmmakers and showrunners in mind, and sometimes Levine pulls from her own deep contact list to bring in someone exciting, like a hot director, to be part of her pitch.\n\nOnce a project is sold, Levine stays across it to ensure “quality control,” confirming that what goes onscreen represents Audible and our creators well. “Some of the creators like to remain involved, which is great, and others are more hands-off,” she says, “so I update all of our creators about the progress we are making.” In the last two years, Levine has packaged nearly 40 projects across the US, Canada and the UK, and her team has started expanding into Germany, Australia and Latin America, as well.\n\nSo what is Levine looking for in an audio project to pitch for TV and film? It’s a little more complicated than merely picking the best-selling titles. “Although I take note of titles that perform well on Audible, it doesn’t always mean they’re right for adaptations,” she explains. Levine meets regularly with TV and film executives to understand the content they’re interested in buying, so she knows if a studio is looking for, say, more female-focused romantic comedies.\n\n “I’m generally looking for high-concept ideas that can be sold in a quick ‘elevator’ pitch,” says Levine. “I focus on compelling stories, multi-dimensional characters, and how can we put this together and sell it. And it’s even better if there’s high-level talent involvement in our audio and they want to remain involved.”\n\nIt goes without saying that it’s intensely hard to get a film or TV series greenlit (when a project moves from ideation to officially studio-approved production). But Levine reports that when it comes to pitching studios, audio-first productions have a huge advantage to more traditional TV and film pitches. “It allows you to go into the room with a proof of concept,” she explains. “First, because we can give a sense of a title’s built-in audience from how it performs on Audible, and second, because the series comes alive for them as they listen.”\n\nInstead of trying to find time to read pitches and scripts, buyers can throw on their headphones and listen while they’re commuting or at the gym—just like Audible customers do—and perhaps more easily grasp the potential for the project. “Our content comes alive for our customers, and we want the buyers to have the same experience and get excited,” says Levine. “It’s also why many authors are excited to work with us to make Audible Originals—because of the possibility of adaptation.”\n\nLevine says the day to day is not so different from when she worked in TV and film as a producer, packaging and selling, “pushing things up the hill to get them made.” The difference, she says, is that “at Audible, I have way more great content at my hands, which is very exciting.”\n\nAnd Levine lives for the successes. In her role, Kazmi leads teams in ensuring a seamless product experience for creators who work with us, and she helps to strategize our expansion and growth around the world. Kazmi is also focused on creating inclusion and making a positive impact for girls and women pursuing STEM careers. \n\nAt Audible’s Women’s History Month panel in March, Kazmi described inclusion as “being able to bring your whole self to work—your perspective, your background, whatever it is that makes you different—and feel comfortable doing that.” She talked about the importance of representation, and how it drives her to be purposeful about sharing her background as a Muslim, a mother, a woman of color. Not only does it help to challenge and redress stereotypes, but “it makes my team feel comfortable sharing about themselves.” \n\nThe Boston native is able to stay close to her large family as she works from our Cambridge, Massachusetts hub, where a portion of her team is based. One of Kazmi’s main areas of focus is the [Audible Creator Exchange (ACX)](https://www.acx.com/), our all-in-one marketplace for creating audiobooks, distributing them to a global audience on Audible, tracking insights, and optimizing earnings. She and her team work to understand what ACX creators and listeners need and what their pain points are, and then build a customer experience to solve for those and grow the business. The team also works alongside other product and cross-functional teams to enable Audible to expand globally while localizing our capabilities.\n\nWe caught up with Kazmi to learn a bit more about her career journey and the personal philosophy that led her to work at Audible.\n\n###### What drew you to Audible?\nI love Audible. I was an Audible customer for many years before I joined the company, and now I get to help bring Audible to more listeners and creators across the world. I have a philosophy that I will only work for companies whose product I use (and have used before I got hired) and believe in. I want to feel good about what I’m asking customers to use and buy, and this feels like the most authentic way for me to do that. So far, I’ve been able to maintain this philosophy and it has never failed me.\n\n###### As a leader, what is your “super power”?\nExecution. I’m good at getting things done and not giving up, and I’m good at helping my team do the same. I am not easily discouraged.\n\n###### What are some left turns you took on your career journey?\nI’ve had a couple, but the one that sticks out to me is that after graduate school I intended to work in real estate investments. I have an MBA/JD, and I was a real estate major in business school and had a real estate concentration in law school. I finished graduate school in 2008, right before the biggest real estate downturn in US history—so my timing was perfectly bad! I had a job offer that quickly disappeared and many people in my major were in a similar situation. I spent some time looking for other opportunities, but the recovery was slow and I decided to go back to tech. It was a great decision, and in retrospect, tech is a much better fit for my skills and passions. No regrets.\n\n###### If you were stuck on a desert island (with an unlimited supply of electricity) and could only bring one piece of tech what would it be and why? \nDefinitely my phone. Is there another answer? It does everything and it’s compact. I would need internet access, though!\n\n###### Lightning round\n\n- __Coffee or tea?__ In the morning, coffee (three times), black. In the afternoon, English Breakfast tea with milk, no sugar.\n- __Morning person or night owl?__ Night owl, although parenthood has made me want to sleep way more and go to bed much, much earlier.\n- __Where are you working from currently?__ The Audible Cambridge hub in Kendall Square.\n- __How long have you been with Audible?__ Almost three years.\n- __Dine in or take out?__ Definitely dine in. I love eating out and trying new places. I follow all the new restaurant openings in Boston.\n- __Favorite outside of work hobby?__ Volunteering. I serve on the Trustees Council of Penn Women and volunteer for the MIT Venture Mentoring Service. I also recently started volunteering with the local Girl Scout council as a member of their board nominating committee. I generally feel a responsibility to give back to my community in some way and it’s always been an important part of my life. The focus of my volunteer efforts have been on some combination of girls’ and women’s issues and STEM.\n- __Favorite Audible listen, go.__ There are so many, but recently I finished *[Project Hail Mary](https://www.audible.com/pd/Project-Hail-Mary-Audiobook/B08G9PRS1K)*, which is an Audible Original. The performance brought this great story to life. I was sad when it was over!"}},{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"6yTDwbCxLumxJaq7R8O5wy","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2024-10-29T14:47:50.233Z","updatedAt":"2024-10-29T14:47:50.233Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":2,"revision":1,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsAudio"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"asin":"B08G9PRS1K","marketplace":"en-US"}}],"hideRelatedPosts":false}},{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"3iabyDHhxYJwu7OyVyZdoo","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2024-10-02T14:37:07.815Z","updatedAt":"2024-10-02T15:27:14.008Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":15,"revision":2,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsPost"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"title":"Audible’s Editors are Superfans who Bring Listeners and Creators Together","slug":"audibles-editors-are-superfans-who-bring-listeners-and-creators-together","seo":{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"3dC4LzZCaQ5pvgzB9uYpCl","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2024-10-02T14:37:05.461Z","updatedAt":"2024-10-02T14:37:05.461Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":4,"revision":1,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"pageSeo"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"pageTitle":"Audible’s Editors are Superfans who Bring Listeners and Creators Together","openGraphDescription":"Our editors have a dream job: using their passion for storytelling and expert knowledge of our vast catalog to connect customers with listens they’ll love, and at the same time help creators deepen their fanbases. The multi-hyphenate star had just released his memoir, *[If You Would Have Told Me](https://www.audible.com/pd/If-You-Would-Have-Told-Me-Audiobook/B0BX4PNN6D)*, and started by gushing, “I’ve done about a hundred interviews for this book already and this was the one I was most excited about because I’m obsessed with Audible.” At some point the two delved into their recent personal losses, and by the time the interview was over, it seemed as though something much more than media publicity had taken place.\n\nThis level of connection between authors and [Audible editors](https://www.audible.com/blog/category/editors) isn’t uncommon. “They tend to nerd out with us about listening, which creates even more of an intimate connection with fans,” O’Connor says. “And creators always say ‘yes’ to interviews with us because they know we are super familiar with their content and want to evangelize it.” \n\nThat evangelizing creates a deep connection between our editors and customers, as well. “In an increasingly algorithmic world, we know customers appreciate the opinions, expertise and context that a very human editorial voice provides,” says Audible’s Head of Editorial, North America, Emily Cox. Her team’s enviable job entails staying up to date on publishing, entertainment and cultural trends, while maintaining a deep knowledge of our catalog by listening constantly and diversely across multiple genres and formats. “Our mission is to make it easy and enjoyable for customers to find a listen they will love.” \n\nThe team’s enthusiasm has also been a boon for authors like [Lily Chu](https://www.audible.com/author/Lily-Chu/B09BG1FBVX), who made her debut in 2021 with the Audible Original *[The Stand-In](https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Stand-In-Audiobook/B092MVYF26)*. Her fourth Original title, *[Drop Dead](https://www.audible.com/pd/Drop-Dead-Audiobook/B0D6HCPSN6)*, debuted at number two on the Audible best-sellers list for fiction. Chu has two very entertaining interviews on the blog, and her titles have appeared in several editorial collections. \n\n“Listeners are very devoted,” Cox explains, “and when they love a story, they want more, every which way they can get it.” That’s why our editors create a robust post-listening experience, from conducting audio interviews with the authors and narrators, to blog posts, to getting the creators themselves to share their own favorite stories on Audible.\n\nThe increased visibility has helped creators find devoted audiences in a competitive publishing marketplace, including, in addition to Chu, romance author [Leeanne Slade](https://www.audible.com/author/Leeanne-Slade/B0CKW73HSJ), mystery/thriller author [Mark Greaney](https://www.audible.com/author/Mark-Greaney/B002KGVOMU) and self-development entrepreneurs [Mel Robbins](https://www.audible.com/author/Mel-Robbins/B004SWIOHW) and [Rachel Rodgers](https://www.audible.com/author/Rachel-Rodgers/B08DNLH34V).\n\nGiven that Audible’s catalog comprises nearly one million titles, our editors have created several avenues for customers to discover their next great listen. Earlier this year, they worked with our product team to bring their content expertise to the development of [Maven](https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/with-maven-audible-offers-first-ai-powered-search-for-audiobooks), Audible’s first AI-powered search tool, which enables customers to specify subgenres, moods, lengths and more. They also obsessively curate collections like [Editors Select](https://www.audible.com/blog/editors-select-monthly-picks), seasonal guides like the [Fall Preview](https://www.audible.com/blog/fall-2024-audiobooks-preview), and annual wrap-ups Best of the Year and [Best of the Year (so far)](https://www.audible.com/blog/best-of-the-year-editorial-2024). And listeners can sign up for the editors’ [newsletters](https://www.audible.com/blog/category/genre-newsletters), which range from [weekly round-ups](https://www.audible.com/blog/weekly-sound-off) to monthly deep dives into different genres.\n\nAudible editors love to curate collections for just about any listening occasion imaginable, including [kids' listens](https://www.audible.com/cat/Childrens-Audiobooks-Audiobooks/18572091011), which include Originals produced in collaboration with Sesame Street and Nickelodeon, plus Disney titles and more. O’Connor has four kids, “and the eldest is a huge audiophile already,” she says. “Listening helps him focus and go to sleep at night.” She loves that parents like her can easily add curated [family-friendly content](https://www.audible.com/public-collections/0482ef50-6cc5-43cc-acaa-ceb871e4c06a) to their [Kids Profile](https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/with-kids-profiles-parents-can-now-easily-share-their-love-of-stories), a new feature launched in September. \n\nEditors especially bring their vulnerable, authentic selves to our [Hear My Story](https://www.audible.com/blog/hear-my-story) hub, which houses rigorously curated collections of titles by creators who identify as coming from historically underrepresented communities, or who tell stories inclusive of those experiences. Collections include Black Creators, Indigenous Creators, Disability Awareness and more. Senior Editor Michael Collina, who manages the hub, explains, “We have an editor who curates each page, and as much as possible, the editor belongs to that community—as a proud gay man, I curate the LGBTQIA+ page.” Collina also engages sensitivity readers to ensure a collection’s content is “inclusive, respectful and accurately representative.”\n\nAll throughout the Audible blog, editors share their candid experiences and perspectives on the power of storytelling, conveying that “we’re people and we’re big fans of audio storytelling just like our listeners.” Says Collina, “We have a book nerd’s dream job. We just want you to explore and experience all these great stories and voices, and to love them as much as we do.” \n"}}],"hideRelatedPosts":false}},{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"lyxiX4nxPQsuR8zs27QT5","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2024-03-26T16:30:30.955Z","updatedAt":"2024-03-26T16:37:31.624Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":12,"revision":3,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsPost"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"title":"Audible and Amazon MGM Studios Announce Podcast Slate in Series Development","slug":"audible-and-amazon-mgm-studios-announce-podcast-slate-in-series-development","seo":{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"4l1yIMNr4AzCNYHnozpBkf","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2024-03-25T22:27:23.361Z","updatedAt":"2024-03-26T16:36:14.454Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":5,"revision":2,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"pageSeo"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"pageTitle":"Audible and Amazon MGM Studios Announce Podcast Slate in Series Development","pageDescription":"Audible Originals to be adapted include: “The Prophecy” from Simpson Street Productions;
