And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to you, ‘You will shepherd<MH7462a> My people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>, and you will be a leader<MH5057> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the elders<MH2205> of Israel<MH3478> came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> at Hebron<MH2275a>, and King<MH4428> David<MH1732> made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with them before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> in Hebron<MH2275a>; then they anointed<MH4886> David<MH1732> king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>David<MH1732> was thirty<MH7970> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> when he became<MH4427a> king<MH4427a>, <i>and</i> he reigned<MH4427a> for forty<MH705> years<MH8141>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>At Hebron<MH2275a> he reigned<MH4427a> over<MH5921> Judah<MH3063> for seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> and six<MH8337a> months<MH2320>, and in Jerusalem<MH3389> he reigned<MH4427a> for thirty-three<MH7970, 7969> years<MH8141> over<MH5921> all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> and Judah<MH3063>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now the king<MH4428> and his men<MH376> went<MH1980> to Jerusalem<MH3389> against<MH413> the Jebusites<MH2983>, the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776>; and they said<MH559> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>David<MH1732>, “You shall not come<MH935> in<MH935> here<MH2008>, but <i>even</i> those who are blind<MH5787> and those who limp<MH6455> will turn<MH5493> you away<MH5493>,” <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>thinking<MH559>, “David<MH1732> cannot<MH3808> enter<MH935> here<MH2008>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Nevertheless, David<MH1732> captured<MH3920> the stronghold<MH4686b> of Zion<MH6726>, that is, the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> said<MH559> on that day<MH3117>, “Whoever<MH3605> strikes<MH5221> the Jebusites<MH2983> is to reach<MH5060> those who limp<MH6455> and those who are blind<MH5787>, who are hated<MH8130> by David’s<MH1732> soul<MH5315>, through the water<MH6794b> tunnel<MH6794b>.” For that<MH3651> reason<MH3651> they say<MH559>, “People<MH5787> who are blind<MH5787> and people<MH6455> who limp<MH6455> shall not come<MH935> into the house<MH1004>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> lived<MH3427> in the stronghold<MH4686b>, and called<MH7121> it the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732>. And David<MH1732> built<MH1129> all<MH5439> around<MH5439> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Millo<MH4407> and inward<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>David<MH1732> became<MH1980> greater<MH1980> and greater<MH1419>, for the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of armies<MH6635> was with him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Hiram<MH2438> king<MH4428> of Tyre<MH6865> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to David<MH1732> with cedar<MH730> trees<MH6086>, carpenters<MH2796, 6086>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>stonemasons<MH2796, 68>; and they built<MH1129> a house<MH1004> for David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> realized<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> had appointed<MH3559> him as king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>, and that He had exalted<MH5375> his kingdom<MH4467> for the sake<MH5668> of His people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Meanwhile David<MH1732> took<MH3947> more<MH5750> concubines<MH6370> and wives<MH802> from Jerusalem<MH3389>, after<MH310> he came<MH935> from Hebron<MH2275a>; and more<MH5750> sons<MH1121> and daughters<MH1323> were born<MH3205> to David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now these<MH428> are the names<MH8034> of those who were born<MH3209> to him in Jerusalem<MH3389>: Shammua<MH8051>, Shobab<MH7727>, Nathan<MH5416>, Solomon<MH8010>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Ibhar<MH2984>, Elishua<MH474>, Nepheg<MH5298>, Japhia<MH3309>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Elishama<MH476>, Eliada<MH450>, and Eliphelet<MH467>. <p class="hdg">War with the Philistines</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now when the Philistines<MH6430> heard<MH8085> that they had anointed<MH4886> David<MH1732> king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>, all<MH3605> the Philistines<MH6430> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to seek<MH1245> out<MH1245> David<MH1732>; and when David<MH1732> heard<MH8085> <i>about it,</i> he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the stronghold<MH4686b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now the Philistines<MH6430> came<MH935> and overran<MH5203> the Valley<MH6010> of Rephaim<MH7497>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> inquired<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, “Shall I go<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH413> the Philistines<MH6430>?
