</script><p id="h1558534-p1" class="permalinkable">In 1993, Congress passed an uncontroversial bill with only three dissenting votes, which was then signed into law by President Bill Clinton. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act held that unless there is a compelling interest at stake that can’t be satisfied with other measures, federal laws must accommodate individuals’ religious beliefs.</p><p id="h1558534-p2" class="permalinkable">On Monday, a majority of the U.S. Supreme Court found that under this law, a family-owned company (the Hobby Lobby chain) could not be compelled to pay for types of contraception — in this case, “morning-after” pills that induce abortion and certain kinds of intrauterine devices — that it found objectionable because of the faith of its owners.</p><p id="h1558534-p3" class="permalinkable">This is not the giant blow to reproductive rights that some proclaim. “Nobody should hyperventilate about this ruling,” wrote Jonathan Rauch, a liberal Brookings Institution scholar. Instead, it is an affirmation of religious liberties.</p><p id="h1558534-p4" class="permalinkable">Nor does the ruling overturn one word of the Affordable Care Act. Instead, it modifies regulations adopted by the Obama administration to implement the 2010 health-care law. </p><p id="h1558534-p5" class="permalinkable">This chapter of the culture war wouldn’t now be unfolding if the administration had exempted family-owned companies “that had clear and deep religious beliefs that existed outside of the desire not to pay for contraception,” as Bloomberg columnist Megan McArdle wrote. Hobby Lobby, which is closed on Sundays, meets that standard.</p></div><footer class="clearfix"><div class="OUTBRAIN"
