From October 2009 it will assume the judicial functions of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords, and some of those of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. College reference: Grants 173/187.</span></p></span> </div> <div class="odd typeTextarea group1"> <a name="field3"><h2 class="itemExtraFieldsLabel">Appearances</h2></a> <span class="itemExtraFieldsValue"><p><strong><img class="pull-left" src="/images/Newsletter/019-04.jpg" alt="bifolium from a Gospel book" width="229" height="335" />College of Arms Arundel Manuscript 22:</strong> this volume was once part of the important collection put together by Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel (died 1646). In 1678, his grandson, Henry, Duke of Norfolk, divided what remained of the collection between the Royal Society and the College of Arms.</p> <p>The volume includes a bifolium from a Gospel book dating from the last quarter of the tenth century, illustrated <em>left</em>. The illumination includes motifs dervied from the Franco-Saxon style, whilst the text is a particularly fine example of an English Caroligian hand. It has been ascribed to the monk Godeman.</p> <p>The volume is currently part of a major <a href="http://www.rmn.fr/Celtes-et-Scandinaves">exhibition</a> about Celtic and Scandinavian medieval art, called <em>Aux marges de l’Europe. L’art des pays celtes et scandinaves au temps de la christianisation (VIIe-XIe siècle)</em>. It may be visited until 12 January 2009 at the Musee du Moyen Age - The Baths and Hôtel de Cluny, Paris.</p> <p><strong>On Tour in Australia:</strong> Between 20 October and 8 November, David White, Somerset Herald, lectured on ‘Early Australian Grantees of Arms’ to meetings organized by the <a href="http://www.heraldryaustralia.org/">Australian Heraldry Society</a> at Newcastle, Armidale, Brisbane, Melbourne, Bathurst, Canberra, Wagga Wagga, Bendigo, Launceston, Hobart, Adelaide, and Sydney. He also lectured on ‘Foreign Influences on English Heraldry’ at Melbourne and Sydney.</p> <p><strong>Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal:</strong> as Centenary Master of the Guild of Freemen, The Princess Royal visited the College of Arms on 6 November 2008, where she examined some of the College’s records, after meeting some of the artists and staff of the College.</p> <p><strong>University of Plymouth: </strong>the Letters Patent granting Arms to this university were presented by Eric Dancer, CBE, JP, Lord Lieutenant of Devon, in a ceremony at the university on 27 November 2008, in the presence of Henry Paston-Bedingfeld, York Herald. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Plymouth, Judge William Taylor, the Recorder of Plymouth, and Baroness Judith Wilcox were also present.</p> <p><strong>State Opening of Parliament:</strong> Her Majesty the Queen proceeded to Parliament on 3 December 2008 to open the new session. The Officers of Arms were in attendance.</p> <p><strong>Who Do You Think You Are? The article provides a brief illustrated introduction to heraldry, its history and its vocabulary.</p> <p><strong>Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Processions:</strong> an article examining the relationship between the officers of the College of Arms and the celebrations to mark Queen Victoria’s two jubilees, by Duncan Green, appears in the Autumn 2008 edition of <em>The Coat of Arms</em>, journal of the <a href="http://www.theheraldrysociety.com/index.htm">Heraldry Society</a>.</p></span> </div> <div class="odd typeTextarea group1"> <a name="field4"><h2 class="itemExtraFieldsLabel">Recently Recorded Pedigrees</h2></a> <span class="itemExtraFieldsValue"><p><span><strong>DAVENPORT</strong>:</span><span> a pedigree of nine generations, headed by Thomas Davenport of Chorley, Cheshire (who died in or before 1557). He married Ann(e), only daughter and heir of Robert Handford otherwise Honford or Chorley. The entry descends to the children of Henry Davenport of the City of London and later of Hallon, Shropshire (died 1731). College reference: Surrey 31/327.</span></p> <p><span><strong>SHERIDAN</strong>:</span><span> an entry showing six generations of this family, in the form of a descent from Algernon Thomas Brinsley Sheridan of Frampton Court, Dorset (died 1931), and from Mary Lothrop his wife. She was the daughter of John Lothrop Motley, sometime Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the United Kingdom. College reference: Surrey 31/323.</span></p></span> </div> <div class="odd typeTextarea group1"> <a name="field6"><h2 class="itemExtraFieldsLabel">Elsewhere in the Records</h2></a> <span class="itemExtraFieldsValue"><p><strong>Guy's Hospital</strong>: Thomas Guy of the City of London left a will dated 4 September 1724, in which he gave the residue of his estate in trust to maintain a hospital he had founded in the parish of St Thomas, Southwark, Surrey. This hospital was granted Arms, Crest and Supporters by the Kings of Arms on 24 May 1725. Following a petition, Her Majesty was pleased to issue Her Royal Licence dated 19 March 2008, transferring these Armorial Bearings to Guy's and Saint Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust, for the use of Guy's Hospital. College reference: I.85/222. A certificate of Garter, Clarenceux and Norroy and Ulster Kings of Arms was therefore issued dated 7 July 2008, exemplifying the Arms, Crest and Supporters to the NHS Foundation Trust. College reference: Grants 173/224.</p> <p><strong><img class="pull-right" src="/images/Newsletter/019-05.jpg" alt="Badge of the Welsh Assembly" width="158" height="203" />Saint Thomas's Hospital</strong>: Arms, Crest and Supporters were granted to this hospital by Letters Patent of the three Kings of Arms dated 14 February 1950. Her Majesty issued Her Royal Licence transferring them to Guy's and Saint Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust, for the use of Saint Thomas's Hospital, on 19 March 2008. College reference: I.85/225.
