app, then what is <strong class="mw gv"><em class="ns">coroutine</em></strong>, and why you need that.</p><ul class=""><li id="1647" class="mu mv gu mw b mx my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ox oy oz bk">The answer to that is, if you have worked with APIs or Databases, we know that every query or request that is executed, takes a significant amount of time, and we can not let our main thread wait for the results.</li><li id="d152" class="mu mv gu mw b mx pa mz na nb pb nd ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk">Especially in our case, where we have an app, that has UI and a user continues to interact with the app, then it is recommended that the UI should get updated and the phone should continue to respond to the user`s touch irrespective of <strong class="mw gv"><em class="ns">coroutine</em></strong> is to perform multi-threading in <strong class="mw gv"><em class="ns">Kotlin</em></strong><em class="ns">,</em> more like handling asynchronous and returns the result when it is completed just like how we have <em class="ns">promises</em>, <em class="ns">async</em> and <em class="ns">await</em> in <strong class="mw gv">React</strong>.</p><h1 id="dde7" class="nu nv gu bf nw nx ny nz oa ob oc od oe of og oh oi oj ok ol om on oo op oq or bk">Basic Coroutine concepts and code snippets</h1><p id="c7cd" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mu mv gu mw b mx os mz na nb ot nd ne nf ou nh ni nj ov nl nm nn ow np nq nr gn bk"><strong class="mw gv"><em class="ns">Common terms and keywords to get familiar with:</em></strong></p><ul class=""><li id="a8b6" class="mu mv gu mw b mx my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">suspend</strong>: this is used to mark a function in kotlin as asynchronous, which means we can start the execution of code block in this function and can continue to other tasks and don’t have to wait for the previous async function to finish execution.</li><li id="6d4a" class="mu mv gu mw b mx pa mz na nb pb nd ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">runBlocking { }</strong>: this is an async function that can have a call for other suspend functions, and we can directly use it in our code, this is a self-sufficient function to handle all the requirements to execute async functions.</li><li id="89e0" class="mu mv gu mw b mx pa mz na nb pb nd ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">launch{}</strong>: this is used to launch the async code block inside it, and return so that we can continue the execution of code outside it while code inside it continues to run.</li><li id="1cee" class="mu mv gu mw b mx pa mz na nb pb nd ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">async{}: </strong>why do we need this if we already have the <em class="ns">suspend</em> keyword, <em class="ns">async</em> helps us identify the function as async that returns some result, whereas <em class="ns">suspend</em> is used to mark the function as suspended</li><li id="baee" class="mu mv gu mw b mx pa mz na nb pb nd ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">Deferred<T></strong>: this keyword is optional to use but helps us to identify the variable returned from an <em class="ns">async</em> function</li><li id="8587" class="mu mv gu mw b mx pa mz na nb pb nd ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">await(): </strong>this waits for ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">coroutineScope()</strong>: this is used to contain code blocks that can have multiple <em class="ns">coroutine</em> executions running in parallel, but how it is different from <em class="ns">coroutine</em> or<em class="ns"> launch </em>is because, <em class="ns">coroutineScope</em> can be canceled or stopped(due to exceptions), and return only after all the <em class="ns">coroutine</em> inside it has finished</li><li id="bc79" class="mu mv gu mw b mx pa mz na nb pb nd ne nf pc nh ni nj pd nl nm nn pe np nq nr ox oy oz bk"><strong class="mw gv">Job</strong>: as you have observed the <em class="ns">launch</em> returns after starting the execution, then how we can manage the execution of that code, so this
