He was a leader of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_Movement" class="external text" title="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford_Movement" rel="nofollow">Oxford Movement</a> in the Church of England, which attempted to return the Church of England to its Catholic roots. Pope Leo XIII rewarded him with a cardinal's red hat, as "Cardinal Deacon of St George" in 1879 although he was not a bishop. </p><p>He was <b>born</b> 21 Feb 1801<sup id="_ref-bap_0" class="reference"><a href="#_note-bap" title="">[1]</a></sup>. His parents were John & Jemima Newman<sup id="_ref-bap_1" class="reference"><a href="#_note-bap" title="">[1]</a></sup>. He was <b>baptised</b> on 9 Apr 1801, St Benet Fink, London, England<sup id="_ref-bap_2" class="reference"><a href="#_note-bap" title="">[1]</a></sup> </p><p>"In 1845 Newman, joined by some but not all of his followers, officially left the Church of England and his teaching post at Oxford University and was received into the Catholic Church. He was quickly ordained as a priest and continued as an influential religious leader, based in Birmingham. In 1879, he was created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in recognition of his services to the cause of the Catholic Church in England."<sup id="_ref-0" class="reference"><a href="#_note-0" title="">[2]</a></sup> </p><p>He <b>died</b> on 11 Aug 1890 at Birmingham at age 89, and was buried at Rednal, the rest house of the Oratory, Edgbaston, Warwickshire, England<sup id="_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#_note-1" title="">[3]</a></sup> At his request, he was buried with his great friend and fellow convert <a href="/wiki/St_John-4478" title="St John-4478">Father Ambrose St John</a>. </p><p>In 1991, Pope John Paul II declared him 'Venerable'. In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in Cofton Park, Birmingham. Pope Francis canonized him a saint on September 19, 2019. Saint John Henry Newman's feast day is October 9th. </p><p>A tomb of Italian green marble was constructed for placement in the Church of the Birmingham Oratory in preparation for his expected beatification and canonization.
