The disciples are stunned: for the first time, Mark uses the term <a href="/wiki/Rabbi" title="Rabbi">Rabbi</a>,<sup id="cite_ref-12" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-12"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>11<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a></sup> and they ask what they should do and offer to put up shelters or 'tabernacles' for the assembled trio. A <a href="/wiki/Cloud" title="Cloud">cloud</a> overshadows them and a voice comes from the cloud saying "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" (<a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%209:7;&amp;version=31;">7</a>) which is what Jesus heard the "voice from heaven" say when he was <a href="/wiki/Baptism_of_Jesus" title="Baptism of Jesus">baptised by John the Baptist</a> in <a href="/wiki/Mark_1" title="Mark 1">Mark 1</a> (<a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://bible.oremus.org/?passage=Mark%201:11&amp;version=nrsv">Mark 1:11</a>) but now Mark has Peter, James, and John as witnesses to this. Elijah and Moses disappear and they head down the mountain. </p><p>On the way down the mountain, Jesus tells them to keep what had happened to themselves until the <a href="/wiki/Son_of_Man" class="mw-redirect" title="Son of Man">Son of Man</a> has risen from the dead. They do not ask him to clarify this but they question among themselves what this "rising from the dead" <sup id="cite_ref-13" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-13"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a></sup> might mean. For Tuckett, the disciples' discussion "seems to imply that they do not understand what resurrection in general means. This seems incredible in historical terms: <a href="/wiki/General_resurrection" class="mw-redirect" title="General resurrection">resurrection</a> was a well-known idea in [the] <a href="/wiki/Judaism" title="Judaism">Judaism</a> of the period". (verse 16) and a man says he brought his possessed boy for Jesus to heal. The boy has a mute spirit and "foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid" - symptoms of <a href="/wiki/Epilepsy" title="Epilepsy">epilepsy</a>, which Matthew states to be the case. The man says the boy has been made to fall both into water and fire by the demon. Jesus' disciples could not heal him. Jesus says "You faithless generation" (v 19). He commands the boy be brought to him. The father begs Jesus to help the boy <i>if</i> he can, to which Jesus replies <i>"Everything is possible for him who believes</i>", and the man says "I believe. Help my unbelief!" (verse 24, only in Mark's account). </p><p>Jesus heals the boy: when asked by the disciples privately why they could not cast it out, he replies "This kind can come out only through <a href="/wiki/Prayer" title="Prayer">prayer</a> and <a href="/wiki/Fasting" title="Fasting">fasting</a>" (verse 29). They <a href="/wiki/Silence" title="Silence">do not answer</a>, because they had been arguing about who was, or who would be, the greatest disciple, possibly because Jesus only took three of them with him up the mountain <sup id="cite_ref-20" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-20"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>19<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a></sup> and the remaining nine could not cure the boy. In Matthew's account, the subject was introduced by the disciples themselves, who came and asked Jesus who should be greatest.<sup id="cite_ref-21" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-21"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>20<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a></sup> Jesus already knows what they had been talking about, however, and he summons the twelve, sits down with them (καθίσας, <i>kathisas</i>, indicating that Jesus takes His seat in a deliberate attempt to school the disciples) <sup id="cite_ref-nicoll_14-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-nicoll-14"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>13<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a></sup> and instructs them: </p> <dl><dd><i>If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all</i>.<sup id="cite_ref-22" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-22"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>21<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a></sup></dd></dl> <p>He takes a child (verse 36, but verse 35 in the Vulgate arrangement) in his arms and says <a href="/wiki/The_Little_Children" class="mw-redirect" title="The Little Children">whoever welcomes children welcomes him and therefore God</a>. </p><p>John says some other group of people have been healing people in Jesus' name even though they were not part of the group, but Jesus is pleased and says "...&#160;For he who is not against us is for us." (<a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.biblica.com/bible/?osis=niv:Mark%209:40">9:40</a>). In <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.biblica.com/bible/?osis=niv:Matthew%2012:30">Matthew 12:30</a> and <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.biblica.com/bible/?osis=niv:Luke%2011:23">Luke 11:23</a> Jesus says: "He who is not with Me is against Me"; see also <a href="/wiki/You%27re_either_with_us,_or_against_us" class="mw-redirect" title="You&#39;re either with us, or against us">You're either with us, or against us</a>. Gehenna was a trash dump next to <a href="/wiki/Jerusalem" title="Jerusalem">Jerusalem</a> in the Hinnom valley, where the dead bodies of criminals as well as trash were burned. The valley was named after a man named Hinnom who had owned it.
