civil engineering structures is still challenging It has been the focus of considerable research worldwide in the recent decades due to increasing number of reported vibration problems in pedestrian structures. One of the most important key in the designing of slender structures is the Human-Structure Interaction (HSI). How moving people interact with structures and the effect it has on their dynamic responses is still not well understood. To rely on calibrated pedestrian models that accurately estimate the structural response becomes extremely important. However, because of the complexity of the pedestrian mechanisms, there are still some gaps in knowledge and more reliable models need to be investigated. On this topic several authors have proposed biodynamic models to represent the pedestrian, whether these models provide a consistent approximation to physical reality still needs to be studied. Therefore, this work comes to contribute to a better understanding of this phenomenon bringing an experimental validation of a pedestrian walking model and a Human-Structure Interaction model. In this study, a bi-dimensional bipedal walking model was used to represent the pedestrians along with an interaction model which was applied to a prototype footbridge. Numerical models were implemented in MATLAB. In parallel, experimental tests were conducted in the Structures Laboratory of COPPE (LabEst), at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Different test subjects were asked to walk at different walking speeds over instrumented force platforms to measure the walking force and an accelerometer was placed at the waist of each subject to measure the acceleration of the center of mass at the same time. By fitting the step force and the center of mass acceleration through successive numerical simulations, the model parameters are estimated. In addition, experimental data of a walking pedestrian on a flexible structure was used to validate the interaction model presented, through the comparison of the measured and simulated structural response at mid span. It was found that the pedestrian model was able to adequately reproduce the ground reaction force and the center of mass acceleration for normal and slow walking speeds, being less efficient for faster speeds. Numerical simulations showed that biomechanical parameters such as leg stiffness and damping affect the ground reaction force, and the higher the walking speed the greater the leg length of the model. Besides, the interaction model was also capable to estimate with good approximation the structural response, that remained in the same order of magnitude as the measured response. Some differences in frequency spectra were observed, which are presumed to be due to the perfectly periodic loading representation, neglecting intra-subject variabilities. In conclusion, this work showed that the bipedal walking model could be used to represent walking pedestrians since it was efficient to reproduce the center of mass movement and ground reaction forces produced by humans. Furthermore, although more experimental validations are required, the interaction model also seems to be a useful framework to estimate the dynamic response of structures under loads induced by walking pedestrians. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biodynamic%20models" title="biodynamic models">biodynamic models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bipedal%20walking%20models" title=" bipedal walking models"> bipedal walking models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20induced%20loads" title=" human induced loads"> human induced loads</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20structure%20interaction" title=" human structure interaction"> human structure interaction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/96427/validation-and-fit-of-a-biomechanical-bipedal-walking-model-for-simulation-of-loads-induced-by-pedestrians-on-footbridges" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/96427.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">132</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11702</span> Effects of Viscous and Pressure Forces in Vortex and Wake Induced Vibrations</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ravi%20Chaithanya%20Mysa">Ravi Chaithanya Mysa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abouzar%20Kaboudian"> Abouzar Kaboudian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Boo%20Cheong%20Khoo"> Boo Cheong Khoo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rajeev%20Kumar%20Jaiman"> Rajeev Kumar Jaiman</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Cross-flow vortex-induced vibrations of a circular cylinder are compared with the wake-induced oscillations of the downstream cylinder of a tandem cylinder arrangement. It is known that the synchronization of the frequency of vortex shedding with the natural frequency of the structure leads to large amplitude motions. In the case of tandem cylinders, the large amplitudes of the downstream cylinder found are compared to single cylinder setup. In this work, in the tandem arrangement, the upstream cylinder is fixed and the downstream cylinder is free to oscillate in transverse direction. We show that the wake from the upstream cylinder interacts with the downstream cylinder which influences the response of the coupled system. Extensive numerical experiments have been performed on single cylinder as well as tandem cylinder arrangements in cross-flow. Here, the wake interactions in connection to the forces generated are systematically studied. The ratio of the viscous loads to the pressure loads is found to play a major role in the displacement response of the single and tandem cylinder arrangements, as the viscous forces dissipate the energy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=circular%20cylinder" title="circular cylinder">circular cylinder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vortex-shedding" title=" vortex-shedding"> vortex-shedding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=VIV" title=" VIV"> VIV</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wake-induced" title=" wake-induced"> wake-induced</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vibrations" title=" vibrations "> vibrations </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25526/effects-of-viscous-and-pressure-forces-in-vortex-and-wake-induced-vibrations" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25526.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">366</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11701</span> Torque Loss Prediction Test Method of Bolted Joints in Heavy Commercial Vehicles</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Volkan%20Ayik">Volkan Ayik</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Loosening as a result of torque loss in bolted joints is one of the most encountered problems resulting in loss of connection between parts. The main reason for this is the dynamic loads to which the joints are subjected while the vehicle is moving. In particular, vibration-induced loads can loosen the joints in any size and geometry. The aim of this study is to study an improved method due to road-induced vibration in heavy commercial vehicles for estimating the vibration performance of bolted joints of the components connected to the chassis, before conducting prototype level vehicle structural strength tests on a proving ground. The frequency and displacements caused by the road conditions-induced vibration loads have been determined for the parts connected to the chassis, and various experimental design scenarios have been formed by matching specific components and vibration behaviors. In the studies, the performance of the torque, washer, test displacement, and test frequency parameters were observed by maintaining the connection characteristics on the vehicle, and the sensitivity ratios for these variables were calculated. As a result of these experimental design findings, tests performed on a developed device based on Junker’s vibration device and proving ground conditions versus test correlation levels were found. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bolted%20joints" title="bolted joints">bolted joints</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=junker%E2%80%99s%20test" title=" junker’s test"> junker’s test</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=loosening%20failure" title=" loosening failure"> loosening failure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=torque%20loss" title=" torque loss"> torque loss</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121044/torque-loss-prediction-test-method-of-bolted-joints-in-heavy-commercial-vehicles" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121044.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">125</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11700</span> Stresses Induced in Saturated Asphalt Pavement by Moving Loads</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yang%20Zhong">Yang Zhong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Meijie%20Xue"> Meijie Xue</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stresses and excess pore fluid pressure induced by the moving wheel pressure on saturated asphalt pavements, which is one of the reasons for a damage phenomenon in flexible pavement denoted stripping. The saturated asphalt pavement is modeled as multilayered poroelastic half space exerted by a wheel pressure, which is moving at a constant velocity along the surface of the pavement. The governing equations for the proposed analysis are based on the Biot’s theory of dynamics in saturated poroelastic medium. The governing partial differential equations are solved by using Laplace and Hankel integral transforms. The solutions for the stresses and excess pore pressure are expressed in the forms of numerical inversion Laplace and Hankel integral transforms. The numerical simulation results clearly demonstrate the induced deformation and water flow in the asphalt pavement. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=saturated%20asphalt%20pavements" title="saturated asphalt pavements">saturated asphalt pavements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=moving%20loads" title=" moving loads"> moving loads</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=excess%20pore%20fluid%20pressure" title=" excess pore fluid pressure"> excess pore fluid pressure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress%20of%20pavement" title=" stress of pavement"> stress of pavement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biot%20theory" title=" biot theory"> biot theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress%20and%20strain%20of%20pavement" title=" stress and strain of pavement"> stress and strain of pavement</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48170/stresses-induced-in-saturated-asphalt-pavement-by-moving-loads" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48170.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">289</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11699</span> Attenuation of Homocysteine-Induced Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression in Human Monocytes by Fulvic Acid </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shao-Ju%20Chien">Shao-Ju Chien</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yi-Chien%20Wu"> Yi-Chien Wu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ting-Ying%20Huang"> Ting-Ying Huang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Li-Tsen%20Li"> Li-Tsen Li</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=You-Jin%20Chen"> You-Jin Chen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cheng-Nan%20Chen"> Cheng-Nan Chen</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Homocysteine and pro-inflammatory mediators such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) have been linked to vascular dysfunction and risks of cardiovascular diseases. Fulvic acid (FA) is class of compounds of humic substances and possesses various pharmacological properties. However, the effect of FA on inflammatory responses of the monocytes remains unclear. We investigated the regulatory effect of FA on homocysteine-induced COX-2 expression in human monocytes. Peripheral blood monocytes and U937 cells were kept as controls or pre-treated with FA, and then stimulated with homocysteine. The results show that pretreating monocytes with FA inhibited the homocysteine-induced COX-2 expression in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibitor for nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB) attenuated homocysteine-induced COX-2 expression. Our findings provide a molecular mechanism by which FA inhibit homocysteine-induced COX-2 expression in monocytes, and a basis for using FA in pharmaceutical therapy against inflammation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=homocysteine" title="homocysteine">homocysteine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monocytes" title=" monocytes"> monocytes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyclooxygenase-2" title=" cyclooxygenase-2"> cyclooxygenase-2</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fulvic%20acid" title=" fulvic acid"> fulvic acid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anti-inflammation" title=" anti-inflammation"> anti-inflammation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3151/attenuation-of-homocysteine-induced-cyclooxygenase-2-expression-in-human-monocytes-by-fulvic-acid" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3151.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">597</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11698</span> Investigating the Causes of Human Error-Induced Incidents in the Maintenance Operations of Petrochemical Industry by Using Human Factors Analysis and Classification System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Omid%20Kalatpour">Omid Kalatpour</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohammadreza%20Ajdari"> Mohammadreza Ajdari</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This article studied the possible causes of human error-induced incidents in the petrochemical industry maintenance activities by using Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS). The purpose of the study was anticipating and identifying these causes and proposing corrective and preventive actions. Maintenance department in a petrochemical company was selected for research. A checklist of human error-induced incidents was developed based on four HFACS main levels and nineteen sub-groups. Hierarchical task analysis (HTA) technique was used to identify maintenance activities and tasks. The main causes of possible incidents were identified by checklist and recorded. Corrective and preventive actions were defined depending on priority. Analyzing the worksheets of 444 activities in four levels of HFACS showed 37.6% of the causes were at the level of unsafe actions, 27.5% at the level of unsafe supervision, 20.9% at the level of preconditions for unsafe acts and 14% of the causes were at the level of organizational effects. The HFACS sub-groups showed errors (24.36%) inadequate supervision (14.89%) and violations (13.26%) with the most frequency. According to findings of this study, increasing the training effectiveness of operators and supervision improvement respectively are the most important measures in decreasing the human error-induced incidents in petrochemical industry maintenance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20error" title="human error">human error</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=petrochemical%20industry" title=" petrochemical industry"> petrochemical industry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=maintenance" title=" maintenance"> maintenance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HFACS" title=" HFACS"> HFACS</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/73355/investigating-the-causes-of-human-error-induced-incidents-in-the-maintenance-operations-of-petrochemical-industry-by-using-human-factors-analysis-and-classification-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/73355.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">243</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11697</span> Structural Behavior of Incomplete Box Girder Bridges Subjected to Unpredicted Loads</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=E.%20H.%20N.%20Gashti">E. An experiment on human walking is carried out on a stationary floor especially paying attention to higher components of dynamic vertical walking force. Based on measured acceleration data of the human lumbar part, not only in-phase component with frequency of 2 fw, 3 fw, but also in-opposite-phase component with frequency of 0.5 fw, 1.5 fw, 2.5 fw where fw is the walking rate is observed. The vertical vibration of pedestrian bridge induced by higher components of human walking vertical force is also discussed in this paper. A full scale measurement for the existing pedestrian bridge with center span length of 33 m is carried out focusing on the resonance phenomenon due to higher components of human walking vertical force. Dynamic response characteristics excited by these vertical higher components of human walking are revealed from the dynamic design viewpoint of pedestrian bridge. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=simplified%20method" title="simplified method">simplified method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20walking%20vertical%20force" title=" human walking vertical force"> human walking vertical force</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=higher%20component" title=" higher component"> higher component</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pedestrian%20bridge%20vibration" title=" pedestrian bridge vibration"> pedestrian bridge vibration</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28100/human-walking-vertical-force-and-vertical-vibration-of-pedestrian-bridge-induced-by-its-higher-components" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28100.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">435</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11695</span> The Glycitin and 38 Combination Inhibit the UV-Induced Wrinkle Fomation in Human Primary Fibroblast</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Manh%20Tin%20Ho">Manh Tin Ho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Phorl%20Sophors"> Phorl Sophors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ga%20Young%20Seo"> Ga Young Seo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Young%20Mee%20Kim"> Young Mee Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Youngho%20Lim"> Youngho Lim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Moonjae%20Cho"> Moonjae Cho</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> UV radiation in sunlight is one of the most potential factor induced skin ageing and photocarcinogenesis. UV may induce the melanin production and wrinkle formation. Recently, the natural secondary compounds have been reported that had the beneficial protective effects from UV light. In this study, we investigated the effects of two different compounds, glycitin and 38, on human dermal fibroblast. We first only treated the 38 on melanocyte cell to test the proliferation inhibition of 38 on this cell line. Then, we induced the combination of glycitin and 38 on human dermal fibroblast in 48h and investigate the proliferation, collagen production and the metalloproteinase family expression. The 38 alone could inhibit the proliferation of melanocyte which indicated the reduction of melanin production. The combination of glycitin and 38 truly increased the fibroblast proliferation and even they could recover the UV-induced and H2O2-induced damaged fibroblast proliferation. The co-treatment also promoted the collagen IV expression significantly and accelerated the total collagen secretion. In addition, metalloproteinase (MMPs) family such as MMP1, MMP2, MMP7 was down-regulated in transcriptional level. In conclusion, the combination of glycitin and 38 has induced the fibroblast proliferation even when it was damaged by UV exposure and H2O2, whereas augmented collagen production and inhibited the MMPs caused the wrinkle formation and decreased the melanocyte proliferation, suggested an potential UV-protective therapy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UV%20radiation" title="UV radiation">UV radiation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wrinkle" title=" wrinkle"> wrinkle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ageing" title=" ageing"> ageing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=glycitin" title=" glycitin"> glycitin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dermal%20fibroblast" title=" dermal fibroblast"> dermal fibroblast</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12751/the-glycitin-and-38-combination-inhibit-the-uv-induced-wrinkle-fomation-in-human-primary-fibroblast" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12751.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">238</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11694</span> Effect of Wind Braces to Earthquake Resistance of Steel Structures</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=H.%20Gokdemir">H. Under these loads, structures make deformations and deformation values of structural elements mustn't exceed their capacity for structural stability. Especially, lateral loads cause critical deformations because of their random directions and magnitudes. Wind load is one of the lateral loads which can act in any direction and any magnitude. Although wind has nearly no effect on reinforced concrete structures, it must be considered for steel structures, roof systems and slender structures like minarets. Therefore, every structure must be able to resist wind loads acting parallel and perpendicular to any side. One of the effective methods for resisting lateral loads is assembling cross steel elements between columns which are called as wind bracing. These cross elements increases lateral rigidity of a structure and prevent exceeding of deformation capacity of the structural system. So, this means cross elements are also effective in resisting earthquake loads too. In this paper; Effects of wind bracing to earthquake resistance of structures are studied. Structure models (with and without wind bracing) are generated and these models are solved under both earthquake and wind loads with different seismic zone parameters. It is concluded by the calculations that; in low-seismic risk zones, wind bracing can easily resist earthquake loads and no additional reinforcement for earthquake loads is necessary. Similarly; in high-seismic risk zones, earthquake cross elements resist wind loads too. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wind%20bracings" title="wind bracings">wind bracings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake" title=" earthquake"> earthquake</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=steel%20structures" title=" steel structures"> steel structures</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vertical%20and%20lateral%20loads" title=" vertical and lateral loads"> vertical and lateral loads</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23581/effect-of-wind-braces-to-earthquake-resistance-of-steel-structures" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23581.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">471</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11693</span> Activation of TNF-α from Human Endothelial Cells by Exposure of the Mitochondrial Stress Protein (Hsp60) Secreted from THP-1 Monocytes to High Glucose</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ryan%20D.%20Martinus">Ryan D. However, the molecular mechanisms by which diabetes contributes to endothelial inflammation remain to be established. Using In-vitro cultured Human cells and Hsp60 specific ELISA assays, we show that Hsp60 is not only induced in Human monocyte cells under hyperglycaemic conditions but that the Hsp60 is also secreted from these cells. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that the Hsp60 secreted from these monocyte cells is also able to activate Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) from Human endothelial cells. This suggests that a potential link may exist between the hyperglycaemia-induced expression of Hsp60 in monocyte cells and vascular inflammation. Circulating levels of Hsp60 due to mitochondrial stress in diabetes patients could, therefore, be an important modulator of inflammation in endothelial cells and thus contribute to the increased incidences of atherosclerosis in diabetes mellitus. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mitochondria" title="mitochondria">mitochondria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hsp60" title=" Hsp60"> Hsp60</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inflammation" title=" inflammation"> inflammation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diabetes%20mellitus" title=" diabetes mellitus"> diabetes mellitus</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107492/activation-of-tnf-a-from-human-endothelial-cells-by-exposure-of-the-mitochondrial-stress-protein-hsp60-secreted-from-thp-1-monocytes-to-high-glucose" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107492.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">182</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11692</span> Multiscale Model of Blast Explosion Human Injury Biomechanics</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Raj%20K.%20Gupta">Raj K. Injuries caused by IEDs result from a combination of the primary blast wave, penetrating fragments, and human body accelerations and impacts. This paper presents a multiscale computational model of coupled blast physics, whole human body biodynamics and injury biomechanics of sensitive organs. The disparity of the involved space- and time-scales is used to conduct sequential modeling of an IED explosion event, CFD simulation of blast loads on the human body and FEM modeling of body biodynamics and injury biomechanics. The paper presents simulation results for blast-induced brain injury coupling macro-scale brain biomechanics and micro-scale response of sensitive neuro-axonal structures. These vertical and horizontal loads are due to the loads coming from the superstructure and wind, water thrust, earthquake, and earth pressure, respectively. In a pile foundation, piles are used in groups. Vertical piles in a group of piles are more efficient to take vertical loads as compared to horizontal loads and when the horizontal load per pile exceeds the bearing capacity of the vertical piles in that case batter piles are used with vertical piles because batter piles can take more lateral loads than vertical piles. In this paper, a model study was conducted on three vertical pile group with single positive and negative battered pile subjected to lateral loads. The batter angle for battered piles was ±35◦ with the vertical axis. Piles were spaced at 2.5d (d=diameter of pile) to each other. The soil used for model test was cohesionless soil. Lateral loads were applied in three stages on all the pile groups individually and it was found that under the repeated action of lateral loading, the deflection of the piles increased under the same loading. After comparing the results, it was found that the pile group with positive batter pile fails at 28 kgf and the pile group with negative batter pile fails at 24 kgf so it shows that positive battered piles are stronger than the negative battered piles. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vertical%20piles" title="vertical piles">vertical piles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=positive%20battered%20piles" title=" positive battered piles"> positive battered piles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=negative%20battered%20piles" title=" negative battered piles"> negative battered piles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cohesionless%20soil" title=" cohesionless soil"> cohesionless soil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lateral%20loads" title=" lateral loads"> lateral loads</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=model%20test" title=" model test"> model test</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/8428/behaviour-of-laterally-loaded-pile-groups-in-cohesionless-soil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/8428.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">405</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11690</span> Mitigation of Wind Loads on a Building Using Small Wind Turbines</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Arindam%20Chowdhury">Arindam Chowdhury</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andres%20Tremante"> Andres Tremante</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohammadtaghi%20Moravej"> Mohammadtaghi Moravej</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bodhisatta%20Hajra"> Bodhisatta Hajra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ioannis%20Zisis"> Ioannis Zisis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Irwin"> Peter Irwin</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Extreme wind events, such as hurricanes, have caused significant damage to buildings, resulting in losses worth millions of dollars. The roof of a building is most vulnerable to wind-induced damage due to the high suctions experienced by the roof in extreme wind conditions. Wind turbines fitted to buildings can help generate energy, but to our knowledge, their application to wind load mitigation is not well known. This paper presents results from an experimental study to assess the effect of small wind turbines (developed and patented by the first and second authors) on the wind loads on a low rise building roof. The tests were carried out for an open terrain at the Wall of Wind (WOW) experimental facility at Florida International University (FIU), Miami, Florida, USA, for three cases – bare roof, roof fitted with wind turbines placed closer to the roof edges, and roof with wind turbines placed away from the roof edges. Results clearly indicate that the presence of the wind turbines reduced the mean and peak pressure coefficients (less suction) on the roof when compared to the bare deck case. Furthermore, the peak pressure coefficients were found to be lower (less suction) when the wind turbines were placed closer to the roof, than away from the roof. Flow visualization studies using smoke and gravel clearly showed that the presence of the turbines disrupted the formation of vortices formed by cornering winds, thereby reducing roof suctions and preventing lift off of roof coverings. This study shows that the wind turbines besides generating wind energy, can be used for mitigating wind induced damage to the building roof. Future research must be directed towards understanding the effect of these wind turbines on other roof geometries (e.g. hip/gable) in different terrain conditions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wall%20of%20wind" title="wall of wind">wall of wind</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wind%20loads" title=" wind loads"> wind loads</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wind%20turbine" title=" wind turbine"> wind turbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=building" title=" building"> building</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/76245/mitigation-of-wind-loads-on-a-building-using-small-wind-turbines" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/76245.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">250</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11689</span> Kernel Parallelization Equation for Identifying Structures under Unknown and Periodic Loads</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seyed%20Sadegh%20Naseralavi">Seyed Sadegh Naseralavi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents a Kernel parallelization equation for damage identification in structures under unknown periodic excitations. Herein, the dynamic differential equation of the motion of structure is viewed as a mapping from displacements to external forces. Utilizing this viewpoint, a new method for damage detection in structures under periodic loads is presented. The developed method requires only two periods of load. The method detects the damages without finding the input loads. The method is based on the fact that structural displacements under free and forced vibrations are associated with two parallel subspaces in the displacement space. Considering the concept, kernel parallelization equation (KPE) is derived for damage detection under unknown periodic loads. This item has been done analytically in the present paper for the first time. Due to the importance of building arched bridges as a great structure in the human being civilization and its specifications such as transferring vertical loads to its arcs and the lack of bending moments and shearing forces, this case study is devoted to this special issue. Here, the nonlinear vibration of arched bridges has been modeled and simulated by an arched beam with harmonic vertical loads and its behavior has been investigated by analyzing a nonlinear partial differential equation governing the system. It is notable that the procedure has been done analytically by AGM (Akbari, Ganji Method). Furthermore, comparisons have been made between the obtained results by numerical Method (rkf-45) and AGM in order to assess the scientific validity. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new%20method%20%28AGM%29" title="new method (AGM)">new method (AGM)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arched%20beam%20bridges" title=" arched beam bridges"> arched beam bridges</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=angular%20frequency" title=" angular frequency"> angular frequency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=harmonic%20loads" title=" harmonic loads"> harmonic loads</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32317/investigate-and-solving-analytically-at-vibrational-structures-in-arched-beam-to-bridges-by-new-method-agm" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32317.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">299</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11684</span> Breeding Biology and Induced Breeding Status of Freshwater Mud Eel, Monopterus cuchia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Faruque%20Miah">Faruque Miah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hafij%20Ali"> Hafij Ali</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Enaya%20Jannat"> Enaya Jannat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tanmoy%20Modok%20Shuvra"> Tanmoy Modok Shuvra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20Niamul%20Naser"> M. Breeding biology of freshwater mud eel, Monopterus cuchia was considered in terms of gonadosomatic index, length-weight relationship of gonad, ova diameter and fecundity. The ova diameter was recorded from 0.3 mm to 4.30 mm and the individual fecundity was recorded from 155 to 1495 while relative fecundity was found from 2.64 to 12.45. The fecundity related to body weight and length of fish was also discussed. A peak of GSI was observed 2.14±0.2 in male and 5.1 ±1.09 in female. Induced breeding of freshwater mud eel, Monopterus cuchia was also practiced with different doses of different inducing agents like pituitary gland (PG), human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and Ovuline-a synthetic hormone in different environmental conditions. However, it was observed that the artificial breeding of freshwater mud eel, Monopterus cuchia was not yet succeeded through inducing agents in captive conditions, rather the inducing agent showed negative impacts on fecundity and ovarian tissues. It was seen that mature eggs in the oviduct were reduced, absorbed and some eggs were found in spoiled condition. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=breeding%20biology" title="breeding biology">breeding biology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=induced%20breeding" title=" induced breeding"> induced breeding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Monopterus%20cuchia" title=" Monopterus cuchia"> Monopterus cuchia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20chorionic%20gonadotropin" title=" human chorionic gonadotropin"> human chorionic gonadotropin</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22005/breeding-biology-and-induced-breeding-status-of-freshwater-mud-eel-monopterus-cuchia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22005.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">775</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11683</span> Suppression of DMBA/TPA-Induced Skin Tumorigenesis by Menthol through Inhibition of Inflammation, NF-kappaB, Ras-Raf-ERK Pathway</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zhaoguo%20Liu">Zhaoguo Liu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cunsi%20Shen"> Cunsi Shen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yin%20Lu"> Yin Lu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Growing evidence has shown that menthol has potent anticancer activity in various human cancers. However, its effect on skin cancer remains largely unknown. In the present study, we investigated the chemopreventive potential of menthol against 7, 12-dimethylbenz[a] anthracene(DMBA)/12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced skin tumorigenesis in ICR mice. Our results showed that menthol significantly inhibited TPA-induced inflammatory responses and pro-inflammatory cytokine release. We also found that menthol treatment significantly inhibited TPA-induced lipid peroxidation (LPO), mouse UDP-glucumno-syltransferase (UGT), mouse NADH Dehydrogenase, Quinone 1 (NQO1) release. Furthermore, we found menthol treatment significantly inhibited the tumor incidence and number of tumors (P < 0.001). Interestingly, we observed that menthol treatment significantly inhibited TPA-induced altered activity of NF-κB in skin tumor. Consistently, menthol-treated tumors also showed significantly suppressed the Ras-Raf-ERK signaling pathway. Thus, our results suggest that menthol inhibits DMBA/TPA-induced skin tumorigenesis by attenuating the Ras and inhibiting NF-κB activity via inhibition of inflammation responses and pro-inflammatory cytokine release. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DMBA%2FTPA" title="DMBA/TPA">DMBA/TPA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NF-%CE%BAB" title=" NF-κB"> NF-κB</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ras-Raf-ERK" title=" Ras-Raf-ERK"> Ras-Raf-ERK</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=skin%20tumorigenesis" title=" skin tumorigenesis "> skin tumorigenesis </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2813/suppression-of-dmbatpa-induced-skin-tumorigenesis-by-menthol-through-inhibition-of-inflammation-nf-kappab-ras-raf-erk-pathway" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2813.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">314</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11682</span> Study on Residual Stress Measurement of Inconel-718 under Different Lubricating Conditions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20Sandeep%20Kumar">M. These stresses play a vital role in the surface integrity of the final product or the output. Inconel 718 is commonly used in critical structural components of aircraft engines due to its properties at high temperatures. Therefore it is important to keep down the stresses induced due to machining. This can be achieved through proper lubricating conditions. In this work, experiments were carried out to check the influence of the developed nanofluid as cutting fluids on residual stresses developed during the course of machining. The results of MQL/Nanofluids were compared with MQL/Vegetable oil and dry machining lubricating condition. Results indicate the reduction in residual stress with the use of MQL/Nanofluid. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanofluids" title="nanofluids">nanofluids</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MQL" title=" MQL"> MQL</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=residual%20stress" title=" residual stress"> residual stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Inconel-718" title=" Inconel-718"> Inconel-718</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67072/study-on-residual-stress-measurement-of-inconel-718-under-different-lubricating-conditions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67072.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">262</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11681</span> Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives on Climate-Induced Migration in Brazil: Legislation, Policies and Practice</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Heloisa%20H.%20Miura">Heloisa H. Meanwhile, the numbers of climate-induced migration within and to Brazil continues to increase. The operating Immigration Law, implemented in 1980 under the Brazilian military regime, is widely considered to be out of date, once it does not offer legal protection to migrants who do not fit the definition of a refugee and are not allowed to stay regularly in the country. Aiming to reformulate Brazil’s legislation and policies on the matter, a new Migration Bill (PL 2516/2015) is currently being discussed in the Senate and is expected to define a more humanized approach to migration. Although the present draft foresees an expansion of the legal protection to different types of migrants, it still hesitates to include climate-induced displacements in its premises and to establish a migration management strategy. By introducing a human rights-based approach, this paper aims to provide a new multidisciplinary perspective to the protection of environmental migrants in Brazil. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20migrants" title="environmental migrants">environmental migrants</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20mobility" title=" human mobility"> human mobility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title=" climate change"> climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=migration%20policy" title=" migration policy"> migration policy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67717/cross-disciplinary-perspectives-on-climate-induced-migration-in-brazil-legislation-policies-and-practice" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67717.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">405</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11680</span> Impact of Climate Variation on Natural Vegetations and Human Lives in Thar Desert, Pakistan</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sujo%20Meghwar">Sujo Meghwar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zulfqar%20Ali%20laghari"> Zulfqar Ali laghari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kanji%20Harijan"> Kanji Harijan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Muhib%20Ali%20Lagari"> Muhib Ali Lagari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=G.%20M.%20Mastoi"> G. We have gathered the anthropogenic response through a developed questionnaire. The data was analyzed in SPSS version 18. The met-data of two meteorological station elaborated by the time series has suggested an increase in temperature from 1-2.5 centigrade, the decrease in rain fall rainfall from 5-25% and reduction in humidity from 5-12 mm in the 20th century. The anthropogenic responses indicate high impact of climate change on human life and vegetations. Triangle data, we have collected, gives a new insight into the understanding of an association between climate change, drought and human activities. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thar%20desert" title="Thar desert">Thar desert</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20impact" title=" human impact"> human impact</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vegetations" title=" vegetations"> vegetations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=temperature" title=" temperature"> temperature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rainfall" title=" rainfall"> rainfall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=humidity" title=" humidity"> humidity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17974/impact-of-climate-variation-on-natural-vegetations-and-human-lives-in-thar-desert-pakistan" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17974.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">404</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11679</span> Stress Analysis of Laminated Cylinders Subject to the Thermomechanical Loads</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=%C5%9Eafak%20Aksoy">Şafak Aksoy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Kur%C5%9Fun"> Ali Kurşun</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erhan%20%C3%87etin"> Erhan Çetin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mustafa%20Re%C5%9Fit%20Habo%C4%9Flu"> Mustafa Reşit Haboğlu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this study, thermo elastic stress analysis is performed on a cylinder made of laminated isotropic materials under thermomechanical loads. HepG2 cells line derived from human hepatocellular carcinoma and HEK293 cells line derived from human embryonic kidney were used for the in vitro study. The analysis of the fatty acids methyl esters of the extract was performed by a GC/MS. Four groups of rats, each of which was composed of six animals, were used for the in vivo experiment. The pretreatment of HepG2 and HEK293 cells line with the extract (100 µg mL-1) significantly (p < 0.05) protected against cytotoxicity induced by lead exposure. In vivo, the biochemical parameters in serum, namely malondialdehyde level (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, were measured in supernatants of organ homogenates. H. Ext was found to be rich in fatty acids, essentially palmitic and palmitoleic accounting respectively 29.46% and 42.07% of total fatty acids. Both in vitro and in vivo, the co-treatment with H. Ext allowed the protection of the liver and kidney cells structure, as well as the significant preservation of normal antioxidant and biochemical parameters in rats. Halamphora extract rich in fatty acids has been proven to be effective in protection against Pb-induced toxicity. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microalga%20extract" title="microalga extract">microalga extract</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20cells%20line" title=" human cells line"> human cells line</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fatty%20acid" title=" fatty acid"> fatty acid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lead%20exposure" title=" lead exposure"> lead exposure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oxidative%20stress" title=" oxidative stress"> oxidative stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rats" title=" rats"> rats</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163424/protective-potential-of-hyperhalophilic-diatoms-extract-against-lead-induced-oxidative-stress-in-rats-and-human-hepg2-and-hek293-cells-line" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163424.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">88</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11677</span> Genotoxicity Induced by Nanoparticles on Human Lymphoblast Cells (TK6)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Piyaporn%20Buaklang">Piyaporn Buaklang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Narisa%20Kengtrong%20Bordeerat"> Narisa Kengtrong Bordeerat</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of nanoparticles is increasing worldwide and there are many nanotech-based daily products available in the market. The toxicity of nanoparticles results from their extremely small size which can be transported easily into the blood stream and other organs. We aimed to study the genotoxicity of two nanoparticles, Titanium dioxide (TiO2-NPs) and Zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs), in TK6 cells by micronucleus assay. The cells were tested at 8, 24, and 48 hours after exposed to 0.10, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 µg/mL of TiO2-NPs particles size < 25 nm and < 100 nm and to ZnO-NPs at 1, 10, 50, and 100 µg/mL, particles size < 50 nm and < 100 nm. At 24 hours of incubation transmission electron microscope (TEM) revealed that the nanoparticles TiO2-NPs at 1.00 µg/mL and ZnO-NPs at 10 µg/mL were able to be taken into the cells and induced the production of increasing amount of micronucleus in dose-dependent manner. The effect of the two nanoparticles on chromosome aberration indicated that TiO2-NPs and ZnO-NPs are genotoxic. In addition, the toxicity of TiO2-NPs was found to be 10 times more toxic than ZnO-NPs after 24 hours exposure. Analysis showed that the TiO2-NPs induced formation of micronucleus was both time and dose dependent, whereas the genotoxicity of ZnO-NPs was only dose dependent. In conclusion, TiO2-NPs and ZnO-NPs were able to transport through the cells membrane and directly genotoxic to TK6 cells in dose-dependent manner. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanoparticles" title="nanoparticles">nanoparticles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genotoxicity" title=" genotoxicity"> genotoxicity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20lymphoblast%20cells%20%28TK6%29" title=" human lymphoblast cells (TK6)"> human lymphoblast cells (TK6)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=micronucleus" title=" micronucleus"> micronucleus</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49966/genotoxicity-induced-by-nanoparticles-on-human-lymphoblast-cells-tk6" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49966.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">301</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11676</span> Topping Failure Analysis of Anti-Dip Bedding Rock Slopes Subjected to Crest Loads</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chaoyi%20Sun">Chaoyi Sun</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Congxin%20Chen"> Congxin Chen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yun%20Zheng"> Yun Zheng</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kaizong%20Xia"> Kaizong Xia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wei%20Zhang"> Wei Zhang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Crest loads are often encountered in hydropower, highway, open-pit and other engineering rock slopes. Toppling failure is one of the most common deformation failure types of anti-dip bedding rock slopes. Analysis on such failure of anti-dip bedding rock slopes subjected to crest loads has an important influence on engineering practice. Based on the step-by-step analysis approach proposed by Goodman and Bray, a geo-mechanical model was developed, and the related analysis approach was proposed for the toppling failure of anti-dip bedding rock slopes subjected to crest loads. Using the transfer coefficient method, a formulation was derived for calculating the residual thrust of slope toe and the support force required to meet the requirements of the slope stability under crest loads, which provided a scientific reference to design and support for such slopes. Through slope examples, the influence of crest loads on the residual thrust and sliding ratio coefficient was investigated for cases of different block widths and slope cut angles. The results show that there exists a critical block width for such slope. The influence of crest loads on the residual thrust is non-negligible when the block thickness is smaller than the critical value. Moreover, the influence of crest loads on the slope stability increases with the slope cut angle and the sliding ratio coefficient of anti-dip bedding rock slopes increases with the crest loads. Finally, the theoretical solutions and numerical simulations using Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) were compared, in which the consistent results show the applicability of both approaches. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anti-dip%20bedding%20rock%20slope" title="anti-dip bedding rock slope">anti-dip bedding rock slope</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=crest%20loads" title=" crest loads"> crest loads</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stability%20analysis" title=" stability analysis"> stability analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=toppling%20failure" title=" toppling failure"> toppling failure</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89333/topping-failure-analysis-of-anti-dip-bedding-rock-slopes-subjected-to-crest-loads" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89333.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">179</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11675</span> Alternative Method of Determining Seismic Loads on Buildings Without Response Spectrum Application</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Razmik%20Atabekyan">Razmik Atabekyan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V.%20Atabekyan"> V. Atabekyan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This article discusses a new alternative method for determination of seismic loads on buildings, based on resistance of structures to deformations of vibrations. The basic principles for determining seismic loads by spectral method were developed in 40… 50ies of the last century and further have been improved to pursuit true assessments of seismic effects. The base of the existing methods to determine seismic loads is response spectrum or dynamicity coefficient β (norms of RF), which are not definitively established. To this day there is no single, universal method for the determination of seismic loads and when trying to apply the norms of different countries, significant discrepancies between the results are obtained. On the other hand there is a contradiction of the results of macro seismic surveys of strong earthquakes with the principle of the calculation based on accelerations. It is well-known, on soft soils there is an increase of destructions (mainly due to large displacements), even though the accelerations decreases. Obviously, the seismic impacts are transmitted to the building through foundation, but paradoxically, the existing methods do not even include foundation data. Meanwhile acceleration of foundation of the building can differ several times from the acceleration of the ground. During earthquakes each building has its own peculiarities of behavior, depending on the interaction between the soil and the foundations, their dynamic characteristics and many other factors. In this paper we consider a new, alternative method of determining the seismic loads on buildings, without the use of response spectrum. The following main conclusions: 1) Seismic loads are revealed at the foundation level, which leads to redistribution and reduction of seismic loads on structures. 2) The proposed method is universal and allows determine the seismic loads without the use of response spectrum and any implicit coefficients. 3) The possibility of taking into account important factors such as the strength characteristics of the soils, the size of the foundation, the angle of incidence of the seismic ray and others. 4) Existing methods can adequately determine the seismic loads on buildings only for first form of vibrations, at an average soil conditions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20loads" title="seismic loads">seismic loads</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=response%20spectrum" title=" response spectrum"> response spectrum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dynamic%20characteristics%20of%20buildings" title=" dynamic characteristics of buildings"> dynamic characteristics of buildings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=momentum" title=" momentum"> momentum</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22073/alternative-method-of-determining-seismic-loads-on-buildings-without-response-spectrum-application" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22073.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">505</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11674</span> Tribological Performance of Polymer Syntactic Foams in Low-Speed Conditions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R.%20Narasimha%20Rao">R. At Low speeds, the wear rate is sensitive to the sliding speeds and other tribological parameters like applied load and the sliding distance. In the present study, the tribological performance of the polymer-based syntactic foams was reported based on the experiments conducted on a pin-on-disc tribometer. The syntactic foams were manufactured with epoxy as the matrix and the cenospheres obtained from the thermal powerplants as the reinforcement. The experiments were conducted at a sliding speed of the 1 m/s. The applied load was varied from 1 kg to 5 kg up to a sliding distance of 3000 m. The wear rate increased with the sliding distance at lower loads. The trend was reversed at higher loads of 5kg. This may be due to the high plastic deformation at the initial stages when higher loads were applied. This was evident with the higher friction constants for the higher loads. The adhesive wear was found to be predominant for lower loads, while the abrasive wear tracks can be seen in micrographs of samples tested under higher loads. <p
