Like his American counterpart Carleton Coon (1904-1981) in 1929- 1930, he carried out research in physical anthropology in the mountains of northern Albania. In 1937, Schulz took part in a German-Italian expedition to Theth in the Shala Valley on behalf of a so-called Thuringia Institute for Racial Studies (Thüringisches Landesamt für Rassewesen) in Weimar. During a longer stay in Theth, he measured body shapes and sizes and noted the physiognomic particularities of the natives for an academic discipline called anthropometry that – then strongly infiltrated by fascist ideology – was soon to fall out of fashion. In the course of his research in Shala, Schulz also took over two hundred photographs of school children and other pictures. These photos are said to have ended up in an archive in Halle, but may have been destroyed during the Second World War. What he did leave us at any rate are several spectacular photos of a traditional funeral in Theth that he published in the Leizpig periodical Atlantis (vol. 10, 1938, p. 257-259). Reimer Schulz had intended to complete his anthropological research with a second trip to Theth and had begun learning Albanian, but the Second World War intervened. He died as a soldier on the eastern front on 14 July 1941.
      jquery image lightboxby VisualLightBox.com v6.1

Die Fotosammlung des Reimer Schulz
English | Shqip

Nordalbanien in den Jahren 1937

Dr. Reimer Schulz (gest. Juli 1941.

Koleksioni fotografik i Rajmer Shulcit (Reimer Schulz)
English | Deutsch

Shqipëria e Veriut në vitet 1937

Dr. Raimer Shulc (vd. 1941) ishte antropolog gjerman.

TOP
