Through this lens, it looks at the space metaphors and imaginative geographies that defined the core meanings of the Middle Sea over the last 200 years. The author discusses the role that the Enlightenment philosophy of history had in the shaping of classical geography. Moving on similar grounds, early geopolitical writers believed in the &#39;force of history&#39; as a generator of spatial order. They used episodes of the Mediterranean past as a parable for the spatial articulation of contact, conflict and power in the overall &#39;process of civilization&#39;. In their writings recurs an idea, which resonates also in later key texts regarding the same maritime space. It is the idea of a &#39;greater Mediterranean&#39; that after the fifteenth century was destined to gain worldwide importance thanks to transoceanic expansion. In doing so, geographers, historians and philosophers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries transformed the Middle Sea into a metaphor for the universal mission of Europe and the West.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The Mediterranean Metaphor in Early Geopolitical Writings&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:55411640,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/35546188/The_Mediterranean_Metaphor_in_Early_Geopolitical_Writings&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/35546188/The_Mediterranean_Metaphor_in_Early_Geopolitical_Writings"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="103508160" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/103508160/The_Sea_as_a_Literary_Metaphor_and_its_Representation_in_the_Suij%C5%8Fn">The Sea as a Literary Metaphor and its Representation in the Suijŏn</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="154764949" href="https://ayit.academia.edu/BaoQingtian">Maurizio Riotto</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Acta Koreana 26.1, 2023</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This article examines three episodes reported from Suijŏn (Unusual Stories), a text full of fantastical elements compiled between the 10th and 12th centuries and surviving only in part, due to fragments reported in later works. The three episodes are united by the literary tòpos of crossing the sea, common to many cultures since the most remote antiquity. By conducting a comparative/ structuralist analysis of the Korean text and other texts of the Western tradition, the paper seeks to identify a common &quot;cultural structure&quot;, because of which crossing of the sea becomes a metaphor of atonement and transformation of the individual. In this regard, the three Korean stories are particularly interesting in that the &quot;mechanisms&quot; that drive the crossing of the sea (and therefore of the &quot;alchemical&quot; process of transformation), differ in each episode, but are ultimately positive in terms of the formative path of the protagonists.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The Sea as a Literary Metaphor and its Representation in the Suijŏn&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:103496735,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/103508160/The_Sea_as_a_Literary_Metaphor_and_its_Representation_in_the_Suij%C5%8Fn&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/103508160/The_Sea_as_a_Literary_Metaphor_and_its_Representation_in_the_Suij%C5%8Fn"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="38884184" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/38884184/_Let_me_suppose_thee_for_a_Ship_a_while_Nautical_Metaphors_and_Contemporary_Politics_in_Eighteenth_Century_Translations_of_Horaces_Ode_I_xiv">&quot;Let me suppose thee for a Ship a-while&quot;: Nautical Metaphors and Contemporary Politics in Eighteenth-Century Translations of Horace&#39;s &#39;Ode I, xiv&#39;</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="21462916" href="https://uni-due.academia.edu/JensGurr">Jens Martin Gurr</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Swift Studies 20, 2005</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;\&quot;Let me suppose thee for a Ship a-while\&quot;: Nautical Metaphors and Contemporary Politics in Eighteenth-Century Translations of Horace&#39;s &#39;Ode I, xiv&#39;&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:58981572,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/38884184/_Let_me_suppose_thee_for_a_Ship_a_while_Nautical_Metaphors_and_Contemporary_Politics_in_Eighteenth_Century_Translations_of_Horaces_Ode_I_xiv&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/38884184/_Let_me_suppose_thee_for_a_Ship_a_while_Nautical_Metaphors_and_Contemporary_Politics_in_Eighteenth_Century_Translations_of_Horaces_Ode_I_xiv"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="35492085" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/35492085/Sovereignty_at_Sea_Moby_Dick_and_the_Politics_of_Desire">Sovereignty at Sea: &quot;Moby-Dick&quot; misadventures together. As such the sea in the Odyssey is not just salty, dark-coloured water: it is the continuum in which the narrator&amp;#39;s mind roams, looking for anchor points to which to attach tales and episodes. Searching the virtual space of his imagination, Odysseus presents his series of misadventures and their remote locations as islands in isolation, and uses the sea as an equally virtual space to frame them. For the story-weaving Odysseus, the sea is the fictitious tapestry. And as Teiresias&amp;#39; warning words show (Od. XI 121-137, repeated in Od. XXIII 265-283), Odysseus somehow has to escape this fiction to find peace, though he cannot escape death coming from it.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The Territory without a Map: the Sea as a Narratological Frame and Compass in the \&quot;Odyssey&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:87122520,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/80891215/The_Territory_without_a_Map_the_Sea_as_a_Narratological_Frame_and_Compass_in_the_Odyssey&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/80891215/The_Territory_without_a_Map_the_Sea_as_a_Narratological_Frame_and_Compass_in_the_Odyssey"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="52655005" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/52655005/Uneven_Seas_Notes_on_a_Political_Mythology_of_Maritime_Space_Part_1">Uneven Seas: Notes on a Political Mythology of Maritime Space, Part 1</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="1856184" href="https://fu-berlin.academia.edu/EricdeBruyn">Eric C H de Bruyn</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">31: Das Magazin des Instituts für Theorie no. 16/17 (December 2011): 84-100.</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">[Part 2 appeared as “Beyond the Line” in Grey Room 57]</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Uneven Seas: Notes on a Political Mythology of Maritime Space, Part 1&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:69816072,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/52655005/Uneven_Seas_Notes_on_a_Political_Mythology_of_Maritime_Space_Part_1&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/52655005/Uneven_Seas_Notes_on_a_Political_Mythology_of_Maritime_Space_Part_1"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:63748012,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;doc&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:63748012,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;doc&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_63748012" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
