The Hebrew word for "heard" is שָׁמַע (shama), which implies not just hearing but understanding and obeying. This indicates that Isaiah is not merely a passive listener but is actively engaged with God's message. The "voice of the Lord" signifies divine authority and presence, a theme consistent throughout Scripture where God's voice initiates creation, commands, and calls individuals to His service.<p><b>saying</b><br />The use of "saying" (אָמַר, amar in Hebrew) introduces the direct speech of God. This is a common biblical narrative technique that emphasizes the importance and immediacy of God's words. It underscores the personal nature of God's communication with His prophets, highlighting that God speaks directly and clearly to those He calls.<p><b>“Whom shall I send?</b><br />This rhetorical question reflects God's sovereign initiative in the mission. The Hebrew word for "send" is שָׁלַח (shalach), which conveys the idea of dispatching someone with a purpose. It is a divine invitation for participation in God's redemptive plan. The question implies that God is seeking willing participants, emphasizing human agency and responsibility in responding to God's call.<p><b>Who will go for Us?”</b><br />The plural "Us" is intriguing and has been interpreted in various ways. Some see it as a reference to the Trinity, while others view it as a majestic plural or a heavenly council. Regardless, it indicates a collaborative divine mission. The word "go" (יָלַךְ, yalak in Hebrew) suggests movement and action, calling for a proactive response to God's mission.<p><b>And I said</b><br />Isaiah's response is immediate and personal. The Hebrew word for "said" (אָמַר, amar) is the same as used earlier, indicating a dialogue between God and Isaiah. This reflects the intimate relationship between the prophet and God, where Isaiah is not only a recipient of God's message but an active participant in the conversation.<p><b>“Here am I</b><br />This phrase, הִנְנִי (hineni in Hebrew), is a declaration of readiness and availability. It is a common biblical response to divine calls, seen in figures like Abraham and Moses. It signifies total surrender and willingness to serve God without reservation, embodying the ideal response to divine calling.<p><b>Send me!”</b><br />Isaiah's enthusiastic response, "Send me," echoes his willingness to be God's messenger. The repetition of the word "send" (שָׁלַח, shalach) reinforces the theme of mission and purpose. Isaiah's readiness to be sent highlights the ideal attitude of a servant of God—eager to fulfill God's will and participate in His divine plan. This response serves as an inspirational model for believers, encouraging them to be open and responsive to God's call in their own lives.<div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/isaiah/6.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(8) <span class= "bld">Also I heard the</span> <span class= "bld">voice of the Lord.</span>--The work of cleansing has made the prophet one of the heavenly brotherhood. He is as an angel called <span class= "ital">to </span>an angel's work. (Comp. <a href="/judges/2-1.htm" title="And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore to your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.">Judges 2:1</a>; <a href="/judges/5-23.htm" title="Curse you Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse you bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.">Judges 5:23</a>; <a href="/malachi/3-1.htm" title="Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom you delight in: behold, he shall come, said the LORD of hosts.">Malachi 3:1</a>.) He had before seen the glory of Jehovah, and had been overwhelmed with terror. Now he hears His voice (<a href="/john/10-4.htm" title="And when he puts forth his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.">John 10:4</a>), and it rouses him to self-consecration and activity.<p><span class= "bld">Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?</span>--The union of the singular and plural in the same sentence is significant. The latter does not admit of being explained as a <span class= "ital">pluralis majestatis, </span>for the great kings of Assyria, and Babylon, and Persia always spoke of themselves in the singular (<span class= "ital">Records of the Past, passim</span>)<span class= "ital">, </span>and the "plural of majesty" was an invention of the servility of the Byzantine court. A partial explanation is found in the fact that here, as elsewhere (<a href="/1_kings/22-19.htm" title="And he said, Hear you therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left.">1Kings 22:19</a> : <a href="/job/1-6.htm" title="Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.">Job 1:6</a>; <a href="/job/2-1.htm" title="Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.">Job 2:1</a>; and perhaps <a href="/genesis/1-26.htm" title="And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.">Genesis 1:26</a>; <a href="/genesis/11-7.htm" title="Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.">Genesis 11:7</a>), Jehovah is represented as a king in council. Christian thought has, however, scarcely erred in believing that the words were as a dim foreshadowing of the truth, afterwards to be revealed, of a plurality within the Unity. (See Note on <a href="/isaiah/6-3.htm" title="And one cried to another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.">Isaiah 6:3</a>.) <a href="/psalms/110-1.htm" title="The LORD said to my Lord, Sit you at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.">Psalm 110:1</a>, which Isaiah may have known, suggested at least a duality. The question reveals to the prophet that there is a work to be done for Jehovah, that He needs an instrument for that work. It is implied that no angel out of the whole host, no man out of the whole nation, offers to undertake it. (Comp. <a href="/isaiah/63-3.htm" title="I have trodden the wine press alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in my anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled on my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.">Isaiah 63:3</a>; <a href="/isaiah/63-5.htm" title="And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore my own arm brought salvation to me; and my fury, it upheld me.">Isaiah 63:5</a>.) The prophet, with the ardour for work which follows on the sense of pardon, volunteers for it before he knows what it is. He reaches in one moment the supreme height <span class= "ital">of </span>the faith which went forth, not knowing whither it went (<a href="/hebrews/11-8.htm" title="By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing where he went.">Hebrews 11:8</a>). . . . <div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/isaiah/6.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verses 8-13.</span> - THE PROPHET ENTRUSTED WITH A SPECIAL MISSON. We do not know what special call Isaiah had had previously. Perhaps he had been brought up in the "schools of the prophets." Perhaps, when the "word of the Lord" came to him, he had accepted the fact as sufficient call. Now, however, he had, in vision, a clear and distinct call and mission (vers. 8, 9). He was told to "go," and instructed as to what he was to say (vers. 9, 10). As before (<a href="/isaiah/1.htm">Isaiah 1-5</a>.), while in the main he was to denounce woe, he was still to proclaim the survival of a remnant (vers. 10-12). <span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 8.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Whom shall I send?</span> (comp. <a href="/1_kings/20-20.htm">1 Kings 20:20</a>). Such questions enable those who wait in the courts of heaven to show their zeal and readiness. <span class="cmt_word">Who will go for us?</span> Some explain the plural pronoun as used of the Almighty and those with whom he is consulting. But he does not really "consult" his creatures (<span class="accented">infra</span>, <a href="/isaiah/40-14.htm">Isaiah 40:14</a>; <a href="/romans/11-34.htm">Romans 11:34</a>), nor do his messengers do his errands <span class="accented">for them</span>. The plural form is best explained by the light which ver. 3 throws on it, as indicative of the doctrine of the Trinity (comp. <a href="/genesis/1-26.htm">Genesis 1:26</a>). <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/isaiah/6-8.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Then I heard</span><br /><span class="heb">וָאֶשְׁמַ֞ע</span> <span class="translit">(wā·’eš·ma‘)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8085.htm">Strong's 8085: </a> </span><span class="str2">To hear intelligently</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the voice</span><br /><span class="heb">ק֤וֹל</span> <span class="translit">(qō·wl)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6963.htm">Strong's 6963: </a> </span><span class="str2">A voice, sound</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of the Lord</span><br /><span class="heb">אֲדֹנָי֙</span> <span class="translit">(’ă·ḏō·nāy)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_136.htm">Strong's 136: </a> </span><span class="str2">The Lord</span><br /><br /><span class="word">saying,</span><br /><span class="heb">אֹמֵ֔ר</span> <span class="translit">(’ō·mêr)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_559.htm">Strong's 559: </a> </span><span class="str2">To utter, say</span><br /><br /><span class="word">“Whom</span><br /><span class="heb">מִ֥י</span> <span class="translit">(mî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Interrogative<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4310.htm">Strong's 4310: </a> </span><span class="str2">Who?, whoever, in oblique construction with prefix, suffix</span><br /><br /><span class="word">shall I send?</span><br /><span class="heb">אֶשְׁלַ֖ח</span> <span class="translit">(’eš·laḥ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7971.htm">Strong's 7971: </a> </span><span class="str2">To send away, for, out</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Who</span><br /><span class="heb">וּמִ֣י</span> <span class="translit">(ū·mî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Interrogative<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4310.htm">Strong's 4310: </a> </span><span class="str2">Who?, whoever, in oblique construction with prefix, suffix</span><br /><br /><span class="word">will go for Us?”</span><br /><span class="heb">יֵֽלֶךְ־</span> <span class="translit">(yê·leḵ-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1980.htm">Strong's 1980: </a> </span><span class="str2">To go, come, walk</span><br /><br /><span class="word">And I said,</span><br /><span class="heb">וָאֹמַ֖ר</span> <span class="translit">(wā·’ō·mar)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_559.htm">Strong's 559: </a> </span><span class="str2">To utter, say</span><br /><br /><span class="word">“Here am I.</span><br /><span class="heb">הִנְנִ֥י</span> <span class="translit">(hin·nî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Interjection | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2005.htm">Strong's 2005: </a> </span><span class="str2">Lo!
