The request for a blessing indicates a recognition of the giver's power to bestow favor and provision. In biblical terms, blessings often involve material prosperity, fertility, or divine favor. This mirrors the patriarchal blessings seen in Genesis, such as Isaac blessing Jacob.
"Since you have given me land in the Negev,"
The Negev is a desert region in southern Israel, characterized by its arid climate and sparse vegetation. Receiving land in the Negev would have been a mixed blessing due to its challenging environment. This context highlights the importance of water resources, which were crucial for survival and agriculture. The allocation of land in the Negev reflects the tribal inheritances distributed by Joshua, as seen in the broader narrative of the conquest and settlement of Canaan.
"give me springs of water as well."
Water is a vital resource in the arid climate of the Negev, making springs highly valuable. The request for springs underscores the practical needs of sustaining life and agriculture in a desert region. This request can be seen as a wise and forward-thinking move, ensuring the land's productivity and the well-being of its inhabitants. Biblically, water often symbolizes life and blessing, as seen in passages like Psalm 1:3 and John 4:14.
So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
Caleb's response demonstrates generosity and wisdom, providing not just what was requested but more. This act of giving both the upper and lower springs ensures a continuous and abundant water supply, reflecting God's provision and care for His people. Caleb's actions can be seen as a type of Christ, who provides abundantly beyond what is asked or imagined, as seen in Ephesians 3:20. The dual springs may also symbolize the completeness and sufficiency of God's blessings.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Acsah
The daughter of Caleb, who approaches her father with a request for additional resources to make her land more fruitful.

2. Caleb
A leader of Israel, known for his faithfulness and courage, who grants his daughter's request for springs of water.

3. Negev
A dry, arid region in southern Israel where Acsah's land was located, necessitating the need for water sources.

4. Upper and Lower Springs
The water sources that Caleb grants to Acsah, symbolizing provision and blessing.
Teaching Points
The Importance of Bold Requests
Acsah's boldness in asking for what she needed is a model for believers to approach God with confidence in prayer.

Provision in the Midst of Scarcity
Just as Caleb provided for Acsah in the Negev, God provides for His people even in difficult circumstances.

The Role of Fathers and Leaders
Caleb's response to his daughter's request highlights the responsibility of leaders to provide and care for those under their charge.

Spiritual and Physical Blessings
The springs of water symbolize both physical sustenance and the spiritual blessings that God offers to His people.

Faith and Action
Acsah's initiative in seeking additional resources demonstrates the balance of faith and action in the believer's life.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Joshua 15

Who was Caleb in the Bible?

What does 'God is in control' mean?

In Joshua 15:16-19, how can we reconcile the moral implications of offering a daughter as a reward for capturing Kiriath-sepher?

What is the historical identity of the Amalekites?
Pulpit Commentary
Verse 19. - A southland. Hebrew, the southland. It must be remembered that it became the word for south, because the south of Palestine was an arid tract. Therefore Achsah must be understood as saying, "Thou hast given me a dry country, give me also a reservoir of water." The Vulgate translates Negeb twice over, "australem et arentem" (arentem only Judges 1:15). The LXX. translates both Negeb and Gulloth as proper names.
