But he sent<MH7971> the rest<MH3499a> of the people<MH5971a> away<MH7971>, each<MH376> to his tent<MH168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And Jonathan<MH3083> attacked<MH5221> the garrison<MH5333> of the Philistines<MH6430> that was in Geba<MH1387>, and the Philistines<MH6430> heard<MH8085> <i>about it.</i> Then Saul<MH7586> blew<MH8628> the trumpet<MH7782> throughout<MH3605> the land<MH776>, saying<MH559>, “Let the Hebrews<MH5680> hear<MH8085>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> heard<MH8085> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>the news<MH559> that Saul<MH7586> had attacked<MH5221> the garrison<MH5333> of the Philistines<MH6430>, and also<MH1571> that Israel<MH3478> had become<MH887> repulsive<MH887> to the Philistines<MH6430>. Then the people<MH5971a> were summoned<MH6817> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>to Saul<MH7586> at Gilgal<MH1537>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Now the Philistines<MH6430> assembled<MH622> to fight<MH3898a> with Israel<MH3478>, thirty<MH7970> thousand<MH505> chariots<MH7393> and six<MH8337a> thousand<MH505> horsemen<MH6571b>, and people<MH5971a> like the sand<MH2344> which<MH834> is on the seashore<MH3220, 8193> in abundance<MH7230>; and they came<MH5927> up<MH5927> and camped<MH2583> in Michmash<MH4363>, east<MH6926> of Beth-aven<MH1007b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> saw<MH7200> that they were in trouble<MH6862b> (for the people<MH5971a> were hard-pressed<MH5065>), then the people<MH5971a> kept<MH2244> themselves hidden<MH2244> in caves<MH4631>, in crevices<MH2336>, in cliffs<MH5553>, in crypts<MH6877>, and in pits<MH953a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And <i>some of</i> the Hebrews<MH5680> crossed<MH5674a> the Jordan<MH3383> <i>into</i> the land<MH776> of Gad<MH1410> and Gilead<MH1568>. But as for Saul<MH7586>, he was still<MH5750> in Gilgal<MH1537>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> followed<MH310> him, trembling<MH2729>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now he waited<MH3176> for seven<MH7651> days<MH3117>, until the appointed<MH4150> time<MH4150> that Samuel<MH8050> <i>had set,</i> but Samuel<MH8050> did not come<MH935> to Gilgal<MH1537>; and the people<MH5971a> were scattering<MH6327a> from him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So Saul<MH7586> said<MH559>, “Bring<MH5066> me the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> and the peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002>.” And he offered<MH5927> the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But as soon as he finished<MH3615> offering<MH5927> the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>, behold<MH2009>, Samuel<MH8050> came<MH935>; and Saul<MH7586> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> him <i>and</i> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>greet<MH1288> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559>, “What<MH4100> have you done<MH6213a>?” And Saul<MH7586> said<MH559>, “Since<MH3588> I saw<MH7200> that the people<MH5971a> were scattering<MH5310b> from me, and that you did not come<MH935> at the appointed<MH4150> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>time<MH4150>, and that the Philistines<MH6430> were assembling<MH622> at Michmash<MH4363>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>thought<MH559>, ‘Now<MH6258> the Philistines<MH6430> will come<MH3381> down<MH3381> against<MH413> me at Gilgal<MH1537>, and I have not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>asked<MH2470b> the favor<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068>.’ So I worked<MH662> up<MH662> the<MH662> courage<MH662> and offered<MH5927> the burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559> to Saul<MH7586>, “You have acted<MH5528> foolishly<MH5528>! You have not kept<MH8104> the commandment<MH4687> of the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, which<MH834> He commanded<MH6680> you, for the LORD<MH3068> would now<MH6258> have established<MH3559> your kingdom<MH4467> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>over<MH413> Israel<MH3478> forever<MH5704, 5769>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But now<MH6258> your kingdom<MH4467> shall not endure<MH6965>. The LORD<MH3068> has sought<MH1245> for Himself a man<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>after His own heart<MH3824>, and the LORD<MH3068> has appointed<MH6680> him ruler<MH5057> over<MH5921> His people<MH5971a>, because<MH3588> you have not kept<MH8104> what<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> commanded<MH6680> you.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Samuel<MH8050> set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH5927> up<MH5927> from Gilgal<MH1537> to Gibeah<MH1390> of Benjamin<MH1144>. And Saul<MH7586> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>counted<MH6485> the people<MH5971a> who were<MH4672> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>present<MH4672> with him, about six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now Saul<MH7586>, his son<MH1121> Jonathan<MH3083>, and the people<MH5971a> who were<MH4672> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>present<MH4672> with them were staying<MH3427> in Geba<MH1387> of Benjamin<MH1144> while the Philistines<MH6430> camped<MH2583> at Michmash<MH4363>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>raiders<MH4889> came<MH3318> from the camp<MH4264> of the Philistines<MH6430> in three<MH7969> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>companies<MH7218>: one<MH259> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>company<MH7218> turned<MH6437> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>toward<MH413, 1870> Ophrah<MH6084>, to the land<MH776> of Shual<MH7777a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>and another<MH259> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>company<MH7218> turned<MH6437> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>toward<MH1870> Beth-horon<MH1032>, and another<MH259> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>company<MH7218> turned<MH6437> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>toward<MH1870> the border<MH1366> that overlooks<MH8259, 5921> the Valley<MH1516> of Zeboim<MH6650> toward the wilderness<MH4057b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now no<MH3808> blacksmith<MH2796> could be found<MH4672> in all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Israel<MH3478>, because<MH3588> the Philistines<MH6430> said<MH559>, “Otherwise<MH6435> the Hebrews<MH5680> will make<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>swords<MH2719> or<MH176> spears<MH2595>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the Philistines<MH6430>, each<MH376> to sharpen<MH3913> his plowshare<MH4282>, his mattock<MH855a>, his axe<MH7134>, and his hoe<MH4281>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>The charge<MH6477> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>two-thirds<MH6371a> of<MH6371a> a<MH6371a> shekel<MH6371a> for the plowshares<MH4281>, the mattocks<MH855a>, the forks<MH7969, 7053>, and the axes<MH7134>, and to fix<MH5324> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>cattle<MH1861a> goads<MH1861a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> on the day<MH3117> of battle<MH4421> that neither<MH3808> sword<MH2719> nor<MH3808> spear<MH2595> was found<MH4672> in the hands<MH3027> of any<MH3605> of the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with Saul<MH7586> and Jonathan<MH3083>, but they were found<MH4672> with Saul<MH7586> and his son<MH1121> Jonathan<MH3083>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/13-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And the garrison<MH4673> of the Philistines<MH6430> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the gorge<MH4569a> of Michmash<MH4363>.<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">1</span> As in some LXX mss, but very uncertain;
