A sun-shaped device for displaying the blessed sacrament for reverence, most typically for the service called Benediction. Benediction was abolished by the Anglicans at the Reformation, surviving in the Catholic church; but it was reintroduced into the Church of England in the late 19th century under the influence of the <a href="zoxfordmovement.htm">Oxford Movement</a>. Pretty much a fad, it was still commonly found in <a href="zanglocatholic.htm">Anglo-catholic</a> parishes as late as the 1980s, but has now virtually disappeared. It is also less commonly found in Catholic churches, since the reforms of the second Vatican council. </p> <p>No medieval monstrances survive in Suffolk.</p> </body> </html>
