Overview of the SDI components<a href="#2-Overview-of-the-SDI-components" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h2> <p>The SDI components are all directly accessible through our <a href="http://sdi.eea.europa.eu/" class="external">landing page</a>.</p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/92359/01.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p>The SDI landing page can also be accessed via <a href="http://discomap.eea.europa.eu/" class="external">Discomap website</a>.</p> <a name="21-Metadata-catalogue"></a> <h3 >2.1 Metadata catalogue<a href="#21-Metadata-catalogue" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <img src="/attachments/download/92360/02.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /> <ul> <li>The main component of the EEA SDI is a metadata catalogue service that facilitates the discovery of the data sets produced, acquired and, when possible, published by the EEA. Through the metadata, users can access information on the content and quality of the data sets, and ultimately download the data sets (restrictions may apply).</li> <li>The SDI catalogue is an <strong>INSPIRE compliant Discovery Service</strong> which follows the <a href="https://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/cat" class="external">OGC CSW 2.0.2 standard</a>. It is implemented using the open source catalog software <a href="https://geonetwork-opensource.org/" class="external"> <strong>GeoNetwork</strong></a>. EEA build in Github is available <a href="https://github.com/eea/geonetwork-eea" class="external">here</a>. </li> <li>The <strong>SDI metadata catalogue</strong> is directly available at <strong><a class="external" href="http://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/">http://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/</a></strong>. </li> <li>The metadata available through the catalogue are compliant with the <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/EEA_Metadata_profile_v4"> <strong>EEA metadata profile</strong> </a>, which is fully compliant with <strong>ISO 19115:2003</strong> and <strong>ISO/TS 19139:2007</strong> standards and <strong>INSPIRE Implementing Rules and Technical Guidelines</strong> in particular the Technical Guidance for the implementation of INSPIRE dataset and service metadata version 2.0.1.</li> <li>A <strong>catalogue API</strong> is also available at <strong><a class="external" href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/doc/api/index.html">https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/doc/api/index.html</a></strong>.</li> </ul> <a name="How-to-access-it"></a> <h5 >How to access it:<a href="#How-to-access-it" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h5> <ul> <li>The catalogue can be consulted <strong>with and without login</strong> - with different access rights to its content. </li> <li><strong>In EEA premises</strong> , no log in is necessary for EEA staff and those with rights granted to have access to the full content of the catalogue.</li> <li><strong>Without Eionet login</strong>, a user can access almost the full content of all the metadata as well as to view and download public datasets (e.g. through Direct Download, the EEA website or web services), but does not have access to restricted data (for which Eionet log in is necessary). </li> <li>If a user is <strong>logged in with the Eionet account</strong> (all EEA staff by default as well as ETC and EEA contractors with rights granted on demand by the <a href="mailto:sdi@eea.europa.eu">SDI Team</a>) then users can:</li> </ul> <a name="1-Access-the-full-content-of-the-metadata"></a> <h5 ><strong>1. Access the full content of the metadata</strong>:<a href="#1-Access-the-full-content-of-the-metadata" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h5> <p><strong>Data set download of restricted data</strong> can only be done when specific access rights are given by EEA (eionet group SDI member). If the EEA staff user wants to mount the SDI data driver in their local computers at EEA, the user needs to register in <a href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/samba/" class="external">Samba</a>, which needs to be done the first time the user tries to access the SDI storage and every time the user changes the Eionet password. Create/edit draft metadata records</strong>:<a href="#2-Createedit-draft-metadata-records" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h5> <p>- Create draft metadata according to the "EEA metadata profile" <br /> - <a href="https://www.eionet.europa.eu/about/helpdesk" class="external">Eionet login</a> is required to use the SDI metadata editing option. <br /> - <strong>EEA staff are granted rights to edit by default</strong>. <br /> - The external users need to be included in the Eionet Group "eionet-group-sdi" in order to be able to edit MD records, so they should contact the <a href="mailto:sdi@eea.europa.eu">SDI Team</a> the first time they use the SDI as Editors.</p> <p>For detailed instructions please be so kind as to use the <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/EEA_SDI_Metadata_Editor_-_User_Guide_introduction"> <strong>EEA SDI Metadata Editor - User Guide</strong></a> which has been prepared to guide users in the creation of metadata using the SDI.</p> <a name="22-Thematic-catalogues"></a> <h3 >2.2 Thematic catalogues<a href="#22-Thematic-catalogues" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <p><img src="/attachments/download/134901/4.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>A series of <strong>thematic metadata portals</strong> (which filter SDI catalogue following specific thematic requirements) can be accessed through <a class="external" href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/api/sources">https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/api/sources</a>. Contact the <a href="mailto:sdi@eea.europa.eu">SDI Team</a> for guidance.</li> </ul> <a name="23-Data-storage"></a> <h3 >2.3 Data storage<a href="#23-Data-storage" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <ul> <li>Data sets are stored in a file system (\\sdi.eea.europa.eu\data) and a spatial database running on Linux.</li> </ul> <blockquote> <p>Spatial database: PostgreSQL and PostGIS<br />File-based storage system accessible via CIFS (internally) and "Direct download" (DataShare) as well as HTTPS, WebDavS and FTPS (externally).</p> </blockquote> <ul> <li>This repository should contain the “reference” version of any EEA spatial data set (published or not) used in EEA products. </li> <li>Data sets are to be versioned – not to be deleted or edited. Data are regularly backed-up.</li> <li>The metadata records point to the location of the data set on the EEA SDI file system (only available with log-in). </li> <li>This <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/SDI_data_folder_structure">wiki page</a> contains information on how the SDI data repository is structured. </li> <li>The directory containing the data set (or data sets if several distribution formats are available) described by the metadata shall be named after the data set identifier as described <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/Naming_conventions">here</a>.</li> </ul> <a name="3Registration-of-data-sets-in-the-EEA-SDI"></a> <h2 ><strong>3.Registration of data sets in the EEA SDI</strong><a href="#3Registration-of-data-sets-in-the-EEA-SDI" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h2> <a name="31-Which-data-sets-to-register"></a> <h3 ><strong>3.1 Which data sets to register?</strong><a href="#31-Which-data-sets-to-register" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> Final versions of <strong>geospatial data sets</strong> that: <ul> <li>Are requested for production under the AMP (e.g. pan-European datasets based on reporting data flows, data underpinning EEA indicators).</li> <li>Used directly or indirectly in publications.</li> <li>Used for assessments and indicators.</li> </ul> <p>The SDI describes and stores EEA and external data sets purchased or acquired under specific licenses by EEA (e.g. GISCO, EuroGeographics), as well as historical and latest versions. Data sets for both public and internal use are to be registered. Purchased data sets with restricted licenses shall not be published in the EEA website but can be stored in the SDI under restricted access rights.</p> <p>In principle, other third parties (non-purchased or public) data sets which are produced and hosted by other organisations do not need to be registered in the SDI. The need for keeping a local copy at the SDI should be analysed on a case-by-case basis (e.g. high re-use in EEA's products).</p> <p>It is important to ensure that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the data sets published in the EEA website ("Data and maps") and the SDI and that both publication processes are synchronised (while there is no automatic process in place).</p> <a name="32-How-to-create-metadata"></a> <h3 ><strong>3.2 How to create metadata</strong><a href="#32-How-to-create-metadata" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <ul> <li>A key step before registering a data set in the EEA SDI is to create the corresponding <strong>metadata file</strong>. It is important to keep in mind that there is only a <strong>1:1 relation between metadata and data sets</strong>: several metadata (MD) should not point out at the same data set – i.e. geodatabases should contain one data set described by a metadata set. In order to ensure a logic connection between related data sets and or data set series, it is also important to ensure that the metadata of a certain data set includes links corresponding to related metadata (related series, sources, data set being revised or superseded). </li> <li>Metadata shall comply with the <strong>EEA metadata profile</strong>, which is based on the INSPIRE Metadata Implementing Rules, its Technical Guidance version 2.0.1 and relevant elements from the Implementing Rules for interoperability of spatial data sets and services, and the corresponding Technical Guidance and is ISO 19115:2003/19139 compliant. The EEA metadata profile contains all optional elements offered by ISO 19115 and INSPIRE which are regarded as useful for EEA. Consult the reference wiki page of the <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/EEA_Metadata_profile_v4"> <strong>EEA metadata profile</strong> </a> for more details.</li> <li>An EEA metadata profile aligned <strong>metadata editing</strong> is available in SDI and accessible only with EIONET account. </li> <li>It is highly recommended to use the EEA template available under "Add New Record" as some fields are already pre-filled and some tips are provided. For Copernicus Land contractors we have created a specific template called "CLMS metadata template (only for Copernicus service providers)". </li> <li>It is recommended to use the EEA view of the metadata editing, as it has been designed to help users reach compliance with the <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/EEA_Metadata_profile_v4">EEA metadata profile</a>.</li> <li>Should not it be possible to grant access to the SDI, the use of other metadata editor tools is also acceptable. In this case, the use of the EEA template is also encouraged.</li> <li>When using the SDI for metadata editing, users are encouraged to use the <strong>validation tool</strong> available in the editor menu to ensure the draft metadata fulfills the main requirements.</li> </ul> <p>The wiki page <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/EEA_SDI_Metadata_Editor_-_User_Guide_introduction"> <strong>EEA SDI Metadata Editor - User Guide</strong> </a> provides a detailed step-by-step description on how to create and edit metadata using the SDI.</p> <a name="33-How-to-request-the-registration-in-the-SDI"></a> <h3 ><strong>3.3 How to request the registration in the SDI</strong><a href="#33-How-to-request-the-registration-in-the-SDI" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <ul> <li>The registration of a data set in the SDI is triggered by issuing a ticket ("Task" type) under the Taskman project <a href="https://taskman.eionet.europa.eu/projects/datasets-for-sdi/issues" class="external">“DIS » DIS2 » SDI » Datasets for SDI”</a> by the EEA data custodian</li> <li>The above-mentioned Taskman project is <ins>only dedicated to SDI registration</ins></li> <li>The ticket shall contain the following information to be accepted by the SDI Team:</li> </ul> <blockquote> <p>Metadata (URL to the draft MD record in the SDI or XML file if not created using the EEA SDI metadata editing)<br />Data set (Path where the data set is stored, e.g. in the CWS). In some cases (Copernicus) the data set may not be provided<br />Thumbnail of the data set (PNG format)<br />Whether it is an internal or a public data set</p> </blockquote> <p>Whenever available/feasible:</p> <blockquote> <p>URL (HTTPs) of the WMS and REST services in Discomap (if not already included in the draft metadata). The URL of the WMS should point to the GetCapabilities document. IMPORTANT: We should preferably include URLs which content is stable in the future (i.e. univocal relation between URL and version), and not URLs which content is changing with the new versions. <br />URL of the SDI metadata of the corresponding data set series, data set source and/or the previous version of which the data set to be registered is a revision. It is also possible to link to external metadata catalogues.</p> </blockquote> <ul> <li>The ticket shall be issued as <strong>Task</strong>. In this case a check list with the requirements abovementioned will appear in the ticket. </li> <li>The subject of the ticket should be identical to the title of the data set to be registered. </li> <li>The category of the ticket should be <strong>SDI Registration 1. Creation</strong></li> <li>Each data set should be reported separately as a task in taskman to better follow up on the issues that may arise in each individual registration. Tickets referring to related data sets can be linked using "Related Task" or being subtasks of a more general ticket (large container - selecting "Feature" as tracker under the above-mentioned project)</li> <li>The thumbnail shall be generated in PNG format by the data steward and be included in the SDI registration taskman request. The image shall provide a clear overview of the whole data set and not be bigger than 1 MB. Although there is no standard styling, a marine mask can be used as as a background, together with a country boundaries shapefile.</li> </ul> <a name="34-Quality-Checks-by-SDI-Team"></a> <h3 ><strong>3.4 Quality Checks by SDI Team</strong><a href="#34-Quality-Checks-by-SDI-Team" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <p>Once accepted the request for registration, the SDI Team checks the quality of the metadata file against the <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/EEA_Metadata_profile_v4">EEA metadata profile</a>. If the result of the checks is not satisfactory, the ticket will be re-assigned to the requester to solve the detected non-conformities.</p> In addition to the general quality checks on the metadata content, it will be responsibility of the SDI team to ensure that the final metadata includes: <ul> <li>Correct data set identifier following the naming convention <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/Naming_conventions#1-Dataset-identifier-convention">here</a></li> <li>Appropriate title following the naming convention <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/Naming_conventions#2-Dataset-title-convention">here</a></li> <li>Correct link to the data set thumbnail</li> <li>Correct status of the record if applicable (obsolete, superseded, completed)</li> <li>Links to the directory where the data set will be stored (and that the directory is named after the data set identifier)</li> <li>Links to the web services and EEA webpage (final URLs need to be provided by the requestor)</li> <li>Links to related metadata such as: source data set, parent record (normally data set series), or the data set of which the new data set is a revision. </li> <li>Category tags (geodatacore if the data set is free and open, other categories are related to the thematic nodes)</li> </ul> <p>Before publishing the metadata, the SDI Team will run the internal <strong>validation tool</strong> which includes checks on the main EEA metadata profile elements ("Validate") as well as the <strong>INSPIRE validation</strong> ("TG version 2.0 - Data sets and series"). The latter triggers a validation of the file in the EEA instance <a href="http://sdi.eea.europa.eu/validator/" class="external">INSPIRE reference validator</a> using the relevant conformance classes under "Metadata (TG version 2.0)":</p> <blockquote> <p>Common Requirements for ISO/TC 19139:2007 based INSPIRE metadata records<br />Conformance Class 1: INSPIRE data sets and data set series baseline metadata<br />Conformance Class 2: INSPIRE data sets and data set series interoperability metadata</p> </blockquote> <p>The last version of GeoNetwork saves the status of the last INSPIRE validation (green pineapple - passed, yellow pineapple - failed).</p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/136595/34.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/136596/34a.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <a name="35-Metadata-publication-and-data-archiving"></a> <h3 ><strong>3.5 Metadata publication and data archiving</strong><a href="#35-Metadata-publication-and-data-archiving" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> Once the results of all quality checks are satisfactory, the SDI Team will: <ul> <li>Store the geospatial data sets in the SDI storage place following the corresponding naming conventions as detailed <a class="wiki-page" href="/projects/public-docs/wiki/Naming_conventions">here</a>.</li> <li>Make publicly available the metadata file in the <a href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue" class="external">SDI catalogue</a>.</li> <li>Inform the requester of the finalisation of the registration process and close the Taskman ticket.</li> </ul> <p>Please note that data sets may or may not be made publicly available depending on their data policy.</p> <a name="36-Publication-on-the-EEA-website-via-the-DataHub"></a> <h3 ><strong>3.6 Publication on the EEA website via the DataHub</strong><a href="#36-Publication-on-the-EEA-website-via-the-DataHub" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <p>Datasets for which metadata records have been created in the SDI can be made accessible via the EEA DataHub (<a class="external" href="https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/datahub">https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/datahub</a>). <br />In order for datasets to be visible through the DataHub, SDI entries will have to be associated with a <strong>Serie</strong> . <br />Series are specific SDI metadata entries which are characterized by a title and a short abstract, both of which should be general enough to be representative of the “children” datasets it contains. For example, “Corine land cover” which includes all SDI metadata entries related to CORINE products.</p> <p>The Temporal extent, spatial extent and keywords of series are populated automatically based on the children's elements they contain. The <strong>SDI team will create the new series</strong> or associate your entry existing series based on information provided in the Taskman ticket correspondence.</p> <p>NB: In the DataHub, individual datasets will appear as part of a series and will be listed based on their temporal extent. Only the short text associated with the series is displayed in the DataHub and not the abstract for individual records.</p> <p>The fields that are transferred from the individual SDI records to the Datahub are: <br />- Temporal coverage <br />- Title <br />- Data formats <br />- Direct download, services and links <br />- Published data and last modified date <br /><img src="/attachments/download/281029/DataHub.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p>The search function on the DataHub will also make use of keywords, EEA topics, legislation and data formats defined for each metadata entry.</p> <a name="4-How-to-use-the-SDI"></a> <h2 >4. How to use the SDI<a href="#4-How-to-use-the-SDI" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h2> <a name="41-Discover-data-sets"></a> <h3 >4.1 Discover data sets<a href="#41-Discover-data-sets" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <ul> <li>The <a href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/eng/catalog.search#/home" class="external">EEA metadata catalogue</a> is the EEA tool to discover any geospatial data set used, produced, published or acquired by the EEA, both public or internal. The description of the data sets follows the EEA metadata profile, based on ISO standards and INSPIRE technical specifications. </li> <li>The <a href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/srv/api/sources" class="external">thematic catalogues</a> facilitate the access to a subset of geospatial data sets available in the SDI that are filtered by specific themes or keywords (e.g. Copernicus Land, water, biodiversity). </li> <li>The welcome page of the EEA metadata catalogue includes a search bar, the predefined options to browse by INSPIRE Themes, web topics and resource type as well as a selection of the latest updated metadata, the most popular and the featured searches. Thematic portals may slightly differ in the predefined options of their home pages.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/100500/clipboard-202011061124-9x5wo.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>The SDI in total contains <strong>more than 1500 metadata records</strong>, including both the most recent data sets as well as older versions. By default, when searching data sets those which status is not obsolete or superseded (i.e. the most recent version of each data set) will appear up in the result list.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/100502/clipboard-202011061126-wc6f3.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>The SDI interface offers several options to filter the available records: using the <strong>search box</strong> (including the <strong>exact match</strong> option), using any of the <strong>featured searches</strong> , using the <strong>pre-defined filter criteria</strong> or facets on the left, or using the <strong>advanced searching options</strong> . The <strong>active filters</strong> are always visible on the green box to the left. Results can be sorted by relevancy, last updates, new records, title, rating and popularity (sorting options).</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/100508/clipboard-202011061132-wcggf.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>Only if a user is logged in it is also possible to save (user) searches. In a SDI metadata (in its default view) there is always an abstract summarizing the content of the data set, its extension and its relevance. A graphic overview with a thumbnail of the data set helps understanding the content. Additional information such as the spatial bounding box (minimum rectangle that encompasses all features of the data set), temporal extension, coordinate reference systems, lineage, formats, links to access and download the data sets, associated web services in Discomap, related metadata records in the SDI (e.g. source data sets or earlier versions) and contact points are also provided in the metadata.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/92507/17.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/100523/clipboard-202011061204-ev6lp.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/100525/clipboard-202011061207-fwy39.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80990/19.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80991/20.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>Under <strong>Display mode</strong> users are offered the possibility to get a full view of the metadata instead of the default (as presented above). </li> <li>It is possible to export the full content of the metadata in different formats (ZIP, PDF, XML, RDF) or copy the corresponding permalink.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80992/21.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <a name="43-Access-data-sets"></a> <h3 >4.3 Access data sets<a href="#43-Access-data-sets" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <ul> <li><strong>Remote access</strong>: Once in a metadata fiche, it is possible to access and download the data through the section <strong>Download and links</strong>. Several options are available:</li> </ul> <blockquote> <p>Direct Download <strong>(Eionet authentication for NON public datasets!)</strong><br />WebDAV (https)<br />FTPS<br />CIFS (file system)</p> </blockquote> <p><img src="/attachments/download/100514/clipboard-202011061140-spn8k.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li><strong>Direct download</strong> is the preferred solution for data set download, as it is easier and quicker to select and download one or several files from the SDI storage (if the data is restricted Eionet authentication will be required - after a first-time registration in <a href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/samba/index.php" class="external">Samba</a>).</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80972/12.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li><strong>Mapping the SDI shared drive</strong>: it is possible to access the file system inside EEA by mapping the (read-only) network drive <strong>\\sdi.eea.europa.eu\data</strong>. This is also a good option when you do not really need to download the data sets but just use the data in GIS clients such as ArcGIS or QGIS. Remember to connect to the drive by using different credentials - as you need to connect to the drive using your Eionet account!</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80958/08.png" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80959/09.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>Remember that for any of the options above, before first access or after changing EIONET password, <a href="https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/samba" class="external"> <strong>users need to register in SAMBA</strong></a>. Only EEA staff, ETCs or subcontractors with Eionet accounts will be allowed to have access to the SDI storage.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80950/05.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li><strong>EEA website</strong>: For most of the public data sets, they can also be downloaded from the EEA website. A link to the EEA web page where it is made available is also provided in the metadata record.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80974/13.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <a name="44-View-data-sets"></a> <h3 >4.4 View data sets<a href="#44-View-data-sets" class="wiki-anchor">¶</a></h3> <ul> <li>Since the metadata records include the link to the related Discomap view services (ESRI REST and OGC-WMS interfaces), it is also possible to invoke the view services using the native OpenLayers client embedded in GeoNetwork. </li> <li>The interoperability between OpenLayers and the ESRI REST services is still under development, so the client is best working when we display the associated WMS service. However, it also displays the REST services (but associated information is not yet queriable). </li> <li>There are several ways to display the services in the map:</li> <li><strong>Directly from the metadata</strong>: the option "Add service layer to map" or "Add to map" are enabled next to the view services links and re-direct the user to the map client application.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/81000/22.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li><strong>From the search interface</strong>: each metadata record entry includes an icon if it includes links to services. This icons allows users to display directly the view service on the map client application.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/81004/24.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>In any of the two options above, if in the metadata the WMS Layer was specified, the map layer will be automatically displayed in the map client. If no particular layer was specified, the client will show the different layers in the menu box on the right, and it will then be necessary to select manually the layers to be displayed.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/80999/23.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li><strong>From the map client</strong>: the option "map" in the top menu of the catalogue directs users to the map client without specifying any particular data sets. The map client menu on the right provides the option to add layers from different sources. Click on the first option <strong>Add a Layer</strong>, and select the tab <strong>Search</strong>: there it is possible to look for any SDI data set which has a service linked to it and add it to the map. The client also allows to add an external service using its URL or by adding a KMZ file.</li> </ul> <p><img src="/attachments/download/81026/25.JPG" alt="" loading="lazy" /></p> <ul> <li>The OpenLayers map client includes basic functionalities such as a <strong>layer panel</strong> which allows users to move up and down the displayed service layers, change their transparency, display the associated legend or change the background maps.
