About 200 million people are believed to be living outside their country of birth. They move to escape poverty and unemployment, or political and social repression. </p> <p>Although migrants constitute just 3 percent of the world’s population, they are an important group. By moving, they not only help themselves and their families, but also the countries they move to and the countries they leave behind. </p> <p>While the vast majority of the world’s people remain in their home countries, as globalization spreads, demographic and developmental differences between rich and poor countries will cause more migration.</p> <p>This blog, written primarily by World Bank staff, is devoted to the movement of people, and how migration and the money (remittances) that migrants send home can be leveraged for development. </p> <p>We invite you to share interesting news and research on migration, remittances, diaspora matters, and development.
