reinforced soil slopes is studied using pseudo-dynamic analysis. Equilibrium equations that are applicable to the every kind of failure surface are written using Horizontal Slices Method. In written equations, the balance of the vertical and horizontal forces and moment equilibrium is fully satisfied. Failure surface is assumed to be log-spiral, and non-linear equilibrium equations obtained for the system are solved using Newton-Raphson Method. Earthquake effects are applied as horizontal and vertical pseudo-static coefficients to the problem. To solve this problem, a code was developed in MATLAB, and the critical failure surface is calculated using genetic algorithm. At the end, comparing the results obtained in this paper, effects of various parameters and the effect of using pseudo - dynamic analysis in seismic forces modeling is presented. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20slopes" title="soil slopes">soil slopes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pseudo-dynamic" title=" pseudo-dynamic"> pseudo-dynamic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genetic%20algorithm" title=" genetic algorithm"> genetic algorithm</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimization" title=" optimization"> optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=limit%20equilibrium%20method" title=" limit equilibrium method"> limit equilibrium method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=log-spiral%20failure%20surface" title=" log-spiral failure surface"> log-spiral failure surface</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/14189/investigation-of-soil-slopes-stability" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/14189.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">339</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13675</span> Experimental Investigation of the Failure Behavior of a Retaining Wall Constructed with Soil Bags</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kewei%20Fan">Kewei Fan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sihong%20Liu"> Sihong Liu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yi%20Pik%20Cheng"> Yi Pik Cheng</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper aims to analyse the failure behaviour of the retaining wall constructed with soil bags that are formed by filling river sand into woven bags (geosynthetics). Model tests were conducted to obtain the failure mode of the wall, and shear tests on two-layers and five-layers of soil bags were designed to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the interface of soil bags. The test results show that the slip surface in the soil bags-constructed retaining wall is ladder-like due to the inter-layer insertion of soil bags, and the wall above the ladder-like surface undergoes a rigid body translation. The insertion strengthens the shear strength of two-layer staggered-stacked soil bags. Meanwhile, it affects the shape of the slip surface of the five-layer staggered-stacked soil bags. Finally, the interlayer resisting friction of soil bags is found to be related to the shape of the slip surface. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geosynthetics" title="geosynthetics">geosynthetics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=retaining%20wall" title=" retaining wall"> retaining wall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20bag" title=" soil bag"> soil bag</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=failure%20mode" title=" failure mode"> failure mode</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interface" title=" interface"> interface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20strength" title=" shear strength"> shear strength</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/105967/experimental-investigation-of-the-failure-behavior-of-a-retaining-wall-constructed-with-soil-bags" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/105967.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">131</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13674</span> Hierarchical Clustering Algorithms in Data Mining</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Z.%20Abdullah">Z. Different types of change parameters are considered (mean, variance or both). The posterior model and the conditional distributions for single and multiple change points are derived and implemented using BUGS software. The model is applicable for any set of data. The sensitivity of the model is tested using different prior and likelihood functions. Using Mb data, we concluded that during January 2002 and December 2003, three changes occurred in the mean magnitude of Mb in Kuwait and its vicinity. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multiple%20change%20points" title="multiple change points">multiple change points</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Markov%20Chain%20Monte%20Carlo" title=" Markov Chain Monte Carlo"> Markov Chain Monte Carlo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake%20magnitude" title=" earthquake magnitude"> earthquake magnitude</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hierarchical%20Bayesian%20mode" title=" hierarchical Bayesian mode"> hierarchical Bayesian mode</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21451/detection-of-change-points-in-earthquakes-data-a-bayesian-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21451.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">457</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13672</span> Failure Load Investigations in Adhesively Bonded Single-Strap Joints of Dissimilar Materials Using Cohesive Zone Model</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=B.%20Paygozar">B. This method is of several merits, such as uniform stress distribution, appropriate bonding strength, and fatigue performance, and lightness, thereby outweighing other sorts of bonding methods. This study is to investigate the failure load of adhesive single-strap joints, including adherends of different sizes and materials. This kind of adhesive joint is very practical in different industries, especially when repairing the existing joints or attaching substrates of dissimilar materials. In this research, experimentally validated numerical analyses carried out in a commercial finite element package, ABAQUS, are utilized to extract the failure loads of the joints, based on the cohesive zone model. In addition, the stress analyses of the substrates are performed in order to acquire the effects of lowering the thickness of the substrates on the stress distribution inside them to avoid designs suffering from the necking or failure of the adherends. It was found out that this method of bonding is really feasible in joining dissimilar materials which can be utilized in a variety of applications. Moreover, the stress analyses indicated the minimum thickness for the adherends so as to avoid the failure of them. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cohesive%20zone%20model" title="cohesive zone model">cohesive zone model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dissimilar%20materials" title=" dissimilar materials"> dissimilar materials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=failure%20load" title=" failure load"> failure load</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=single%20strap%20joint" title=" single strap joint"> single strap joint</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/114757/failure-load-investigations-in-adhesively-bonded-single-strap-joints-of-dissimilar-materials-using-cohesive-zone-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/114757.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">123</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13671</span> Optimal Replacement Period for a One-Unit System with Double Repair Cost Limits</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Min-Tsai%20Lai">Min-Tsai Lai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Taqwa%20Hariguna"> Taqwa Hariguna</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents a periodical replacement model for a system, considering the concept of single and cumulative repair cost limits simultaneously. Triceratops has superior motion characteristics compared to that of the Tension Leg Platform and Single Point Anchor Reservoir platforms, which is well established in the literature. Buoyant legs that support the deck are position-restrained to the sea bed using tethers with high axial pretension. Environmental forces that act on the platform induce dynamic tension variations in the tethers, causing the failure of tethers. The present study investigates the dynamic response behavior of the restraining system of the platform under the failure of a single tether of each buoyant leg in high sea states. Using the rain-flow counting algorithm and the Goodman diagram, fatigue damage caused to the tethers is estimated, and the fatigue life is predicted. Results shows that under failure conditions, the fatigue life of the remaining tethers is quite alarmingly low. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fatigue%20life" title="fatigue life">fatigue life</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pm%20spectrum" title=" pm spectrum"> pm spectrum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rain%20flow%20counting" title=" rain flow counting"> rain flow counting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=triceratops" title=" triceratops"> triceratops</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=failure%20analysis" title=" failure analysis"> failure analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110131/numerical-analysis-on-triceratops-restraining-system-failure-conditions-of-tethers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110131.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">136</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13669</span> Nanoarchitectures Cu2S Functions as Effective Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates for Molecular Detection Application</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yu-Kuei%20Hsu">Yu-Kuei Hsu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ying-Chu%20Chen"> Ying-Chu Chen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yan-Gu%20Lin"> Yan-Gu Lin</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The hierarchical Cu2S nano structural film is successfully fabricated via an electroplated ZnO nanorod array as a template and subsequently chemical solution process for the growth of Cu2S in the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. The as-grown Cu2S nano structures were thermally treated at temperature of 150-300 oC under nitrogen atmosphere to improve the crystal quality and unexpectedly induce the Cu nano particles on surface of Cu2S. The structure and composition of thermally treated Cu2S nano structures were carefully analyzed by SEM, XRD, XPS, and XAS. Using 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as probing molecules, the SERS experiments showed that the thermally treated Cu2S nano structures exhibit excellent detecting performance, which could be used as active and cost-effective SERS substrate for ultra sensitive detecting. Due to aging and deterioration with corrosion being the most predominant mechanism, the failure rate of cast iron pipes is very high. Although considerable research has been carried out in the past few decades, most are on the effect of corrosion on the structural capacity of pipes using strength theory as the failure criterion. This paper presents a reliability-based methodology for the assessment of corrosion affected cast iron pipe cracking failures. A nonlinear limit state function taking into account all three fracture modes is proposed for brittle metal pipes with mixed mode fracture. A stochastic model of the load effect is developed, and time-dependent reliability method is employed to quantify the probability of failure and predict the remaining service life. A case study is carried out using the proposed methodology, followed by sensitivity analysis to investigate the effects of the random variables on the probability of failure. It has been found that the larger the inclination angle or the Mode I fracture toughness is, the smaller the probability of pipe failure is. It has also been found that the multiplying and exponential coefficients k and n in the power law corrosion model and the internal pressure have the most influence on the probability of failure for cast iron pipes. The methodology presented in this paper can assist pipe engineers and asset managers in developing a risk-informed and cost-effective strategy for better management of corrosion-affected pipelines. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corrosion" title="corrosion">corrosion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inclined%20surface%20cracks" title=" inclined surface cracks"> inclined surface cracks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pressurized%20cast%20iron%20pipes" title=" pressurized cast iron pipes"> pressurized cast iron pipes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress%20intensity" title=" stress intensity"> stress intensity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61735/time-dependent-reliability-analysis-of-corrosion-affected-cast-iron-pipes-with-mixed-mode-fracture" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61735.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">322</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13667</span> The Failure and Energy Mechanism of Rock-Like Material with Single Flaw</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yu%20Chen">Yu Chen</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper investigates the influence of flaw on failure process of rock-like material under uniaxial compression. In laboratory, the uniaxial compression tests of intact specimens and a series of specimens within single flaw were conducted. The inclination angle of flaws includes 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. Based on the laboratory tests, the corresponding models of numerical simulation were built and loaded in PFC2D. After analysing the crack initiation and failure modes, deformation field, and energy mechanism for both laboratory tests and numerical simulation, it can be concluded that the influence of flaws on the failure process is determined by its inclination. The characteristic stresses increase as flaw angle rising basically. The tensile cracks develop from gentle flaws (α ≤ 30°) and the shear cracks develop from other flaws. The propagation of cracks changes during failure process and the failure mode of a specimen corresponds to the orientation of the flaw. A flaw has significant influence on the transverse deformation field at the middle of the specimen, except the 75° and 90° flaw sample. The input energy, strain energy and dissipation energy of specimens show approximate increase trends with flaw angle rising and it presents large difference on the energy distribution. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=failure%20pattern" title="failure pattern">failure pattern</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=particle%20deformation%20field" title=" particle deformation field"> particle deformation field</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20mechanism" title=" energy mechanism"> energy mechanism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PFC" title=" PFC"> PFC</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74402/the-failure-and-energy-mechanism-of-rock-like-material-with-single-flaw" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74402.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">213</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13666</span> Knowledge Discovery from Production Databases for Hierarchical Process Control</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pavol%20Tanuska">Pavol Tanuska</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pavel%20Vazan"> Pavel Vazan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michal%20Kebisek"> Michal Kebisek</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dominika%20Jurovata"> Dominika Jurovata</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The paper gives the results of the project that was oriented on the usage of knowledge discoveries from production systems for needs of the hierarchical process control. Understanding the ductile failure mechanisms in this steel grade is crucial for designing robust pressure vessels that can withstand severe nuclear environment conditions. In the present study, round bar specimens of SA508 Grade 3 steel with four distinct notch geometries were subjected to tensile loading while capturing continuous 2D images at 5-second intervals in order to monitor any alterations in their geometries to construct true stress-strain curves of the specimens. 3D reconstructions of X-ray computed tomography (CT) images at high-resolution (a spatial resolution of 0.82 μm) allowed for a comprehensive assessment of the influences of second-phase particles (i.e., manganese sulfide inclusions and cementite particles) on ductile failure initiation as a function of applied plastic strain. Additionally, based on 2D and 3D images, plasticity modeling was executed, and the results were compared to experimental data. A specific ‘two-parameter criterion’ was established and calibrated based on the correlation between stress triaxiality and equivalent plastic strain at failure initiation. The proposed criterion demonstrated substantial agreement with the experimental results, thus enhancing our knowledge of ductile fracture behavior in this steel grade. The implementation of X-ray CT and fractography analysis provided new insights into the diverse roles played by different populations of second-phase particles in fracture initiation under varying stress triaxiality conditions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ductile%20fracture" title="ductile fracture">ductile fracture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=two-parameter%20criterion" title=" two-parameter criterion"> two-parameter criterion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=x-ray%20computed%20tomography" title=" x-ray computed tomography"> x-ray computed tomography</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress%20triaxiality" title=" stress triaxiality"> stress triaxiality</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170818/investigation-of-ductile-failure-mechanisms-in-sa508-grade-3-steel-via-x-ray-computed-tomography-and-fractography-analysis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170818.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">93</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13664</span> Extended Strain Energy Density Criterion for Fracture Investigation of Orthotropic Materials</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mahdi%20Fakoor">Mahdi Fakoor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannaneh%20Manafi%20Farid"> Hannaneh Manafi Farid</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In order to predict the fracture behavior of cracked orthotropic materials under mixed-mode loading, well-known minimum strain energy density (SED) criterion is extended. The crack is subjected along the fibers at plane strain conditions. Despite the complicities to solve the nonlinear equations which are requirements of SED criterion, SED criterion for anisotropic materials is derived. In the present research, fracture limit curve of SED criterion is depicted by a numerical solution, hence the direction of crack growth is figured out by derived criterion, MSED. The validated MSED demonstrates the improvement in prediction of fracture behavior of the materials. Also, damaged factor that plays a crucial role in the fracture behavior of quasi-brittle materials is derived from this criterion and proved its dependency on mechanical properties and direction of crack growth. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mixed-mode%20fracture" title="mixed-mode fracture">mixed-mode fracture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=minimum%20strain%20energy%20density%20criterion" title=" minimum strain energy density criterion"> minimum strain energy density criterion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=orthotropic%20materials" title=" orthotropic materials"> orthotropic materials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fracture%20limit%20curve" title=" fracture limit curve"> fracture limit curve</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mode%20II%20critical%20stress%20intensity%20factor" title=" mode II critical stress intensity factor"> mode II critical stress intensity factor</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91812/extended-strain-energy-density-criterion-for-fracture-investigation-of-orthotropic-materials" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91812.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">167</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13663</span> An Alternative Approach for Assessing the Impact of Cutting Conditions on Surface Roughness Using Single Decision Tree</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=S.%20Ghorbani">S. The problem is of interest as a combinatorial optimization one with many criteria, which is a model of many applied tasks. The approach to solving the multi-objective optimization problem on combinatorial configurations consists of two stages; the first is the reduction of the multi-objective problem to the single criterion based on existing multi-objective optimization methods, the second stage solves the directly replaced single criterion combinatorial optimization problem by the horizontal combinatorial method. This approach provides the optimal solution to the multi-objective optimization problem on combinatorial configurations, taking into account additional restrictions for a finite number of steps. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=discrete%20set" title="discrete set">discrete set</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=linear%20combinatorial%20optimization" title=" linear combinatorial optimization"> linear combinatorial optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multi-objective%20optimization" title=" multi-objective optimization"> multi-objective optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pareto%20solutions" title=" Pareto solutions"> Pareto solutions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=partial%20permutation%20set" title=" partial permutation set"> partial permutation set</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=structural%20graph" title=" structural graph"> structural graph</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133824/two-stage-approach-for-solving-the-multi-objective-optimization-problem-on-combinatorial-configurations" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133824.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">168</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13661</span> A Failure Criterion for Unsupported Boreholes in Poorly Cemented Granular Formations</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sam%20S.%20Hashemi">Sam S. The grain debonding usually precedes the borehole failure and it can be considered as a sign that the onset of the borehole collapse is imminent. Detecting the bonding breakage point and introducing an appropriate failure criterion will play an important role in borehole stability analysis. To study the influence of different factors on the initiation of sand bonding breakage at the borehole wall, a series of laboratory tests was designed and conducted on poorly cemented sand samples. The total absorbed strain energy per volume of material up to the point of the observed particle debonding was computed. The results indicated that the particle bonding breakage point at the borehole wall was reached both before and after the peak strength of the thick-walled hollow cylinder specimens depending on the stress path and cement content. Three different cement contents and two borehole sizes were investigated to study the influence of the bonding strength and scale on the particle dislodgment. Test results showed that the stress path has a significant influence on the onset of the sand bonding breakage. It was shown that for various stress paths, there is a near linear relationship between the absorbed energy and the normal effective mean stress. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=borehole%20stability" title="borehole stability">borehole stability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=experimental%20studies" title=" experimental studies"> experimental studies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=poorly%20cemented%20sands" title=" poorly cemented sands"> poorly cemented sands</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=total%20absorbed%20strain%20energy" title=" total absorbed strain energy"> total absorbed strain energy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59146/a-failure-criterion-for-unsupported-boreholes-in-poorly-cemented-granular-formations" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59146.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">209</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13660</span> Why Do We Need Hierachical Linear Models?</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mustafa%20Ayd%C4%B1n">Mustafa Aydın</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Murat%20Sunbul"> Ali Murat Sunbul</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Hierarchical or nested data structures usually are seen in many research areas. The specific weighting factors are calculation, the linear regression dependence of specific losses in semiconductor frequency converters are presented depending on the values of the rated current. It is revealed that with increase of the carrier frequency PWM improves the output current waveform, but increases the loss, so you will need depending on the task in a certain way to choose from the carrier frequency. For task of optimization by criterion of the minimum electrical losses regression dependence of the electrical losses in the frequency converter circuit at a frequency of a PWM signal of 0 Hz. The surface optimization criterion is presented depending on the rated output torque of the motor and number of phases. In electric drives with field regulated reluctance machine with at low output power optimization criterion appears to be the worst for multiphase circuits. With increasing output power this trend hold true, but becomes insignificantly different optimal solutions for three-phase and multiphase circuits. Surface-initiated rolling contact fatigue, leading to a surface failure known as pitting, is a life-limiting failure mode in many modern machine elements, particularly rolling element bearings. Metallography analysis of crack propagation, crack morphology was also described. Indication of fatigue spalling in the ferrography test was also discussed. The analysis suggested the probable reasons for such kind of failure in operation. This type of spalling occurred due to (1) heavier external loading condition or (2) exceeds its service life. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bearing" title="bearing">bearing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rolling%20contact%20fatigue" title=" rolling contact fatigue"> rolling contact fatigue</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bearing%20life" title=" bearing life"> bearing life</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108273/rolling-contact-fatigue-failure-analysis-of-ball-bearing-in-gear-box" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/108273.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">172</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13656</span> A Model Based Metaheuristic for Hybrid Hierarchical Community Structure in Social Networks</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Radhia%20Toujani">Radhia Toujani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jalel%20Akaichi"> Jalel Akaichi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In recent years, the study of community detection in social networks has received great attention. The hierarchical structure of the network leads to the emergence of the convergence to a locally optimal community structure. To achieve this purpose, we present an objective function where we incorporate the value of structural and semantic similarity based modularity and a metaheuristic namely bees colonies algorithm to optimize our objective function on both hierarchical level divisive and agglomerative. In order to assess the efficiency and the accuracy of the introduced hybrid bee colony model, we perform an extensive experimental evaluation on both synthetic and real networks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20network" title="social network">social network</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=community%20detection" title=" community detection"> community detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agglomerative%20hierarchical%20clustering" title=" agglomerative hierarchical clustering"> agglomerative hierarchical clustering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=divisive%20hierarchical%20clustering" title=" divisive hierarchical clustering"> divisive hierarchical clustering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=similarity" title=" similarity"> similarity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modularity" title=" modularity"> modularity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metaheuristic" title=" metaheuristic"> metaheuristic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bee%20colony" title=" bee colony"> bee colony</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64745/a-model-based-metaheuristic-for-hybrid-hierarchical-community-structure-in-social-networks" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64745.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">380</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13655</span> Development of 3D Particle Method for Calculating Large Deformation of Soils </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sung-Sik%20Park">Sung-Sik Park</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Han%20Chang"> Han Chang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kyung-Hun%20Chae"> Kyung-Hun Chae</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sae-Byeok%20Lee"> Sae-Byeok Lee</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) Particle method without using grid was developed for analyzing large deformation of soils instead of using ordinary finite element method (FEM) or finite difference method (FDM). The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was incorporated into the 3D Particle method to determine soil failure. The yielding and hardening behavior of soil before failure was also considered by varying viscosity of soil. First of all, an unconfined compression test was carried out and the large deformation following soil yielding or failure was simulated by the developed 3D Particle method. In such a case, the joint distribution of failure time and a marker value would be useful for modeling the step stress life test. The problem of accelerating such an experiment is considered as the main aim of this paper. We present a step stress accelerated model based on a bivariate Wiener process with one component as the latent (unobservable) degradation process, which determines the failure times and the other as a marker process, the degradation values of which are recorded at times of failure. Parametric inference based on the proposed model is discussed and the optimization procedure for obtaining the optimal time for changing the stress level is presented. The optimization criterion is to minimize the approximate variance of the maximum likelihood estimator of a percentile of the products’ lifetime distribution. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bivariate%20normal" title="bivariate normal">bivariate normal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fisher%20information%20matrix" title=" Fisher information matrix"> Fisher information matrix</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inverse%20Gaussian%20distribution" title=" inverse Gaussian distribution"> inverse Gaussian distribution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wiener%20process" title=" Wiener process"> Wiener process</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/4424/failure-inference-and-optimization-for-step-stress-model-based-on-bivariate-wiener-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/4424.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">317</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13653</span> An E-Assessment Website to Implement Hierarchical Aggregate Assessment</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20Lesage">M. This process describes itself as a field of teamwork assessment where teams can have multiple levels of hierarchy and supervision. This process is applied everywhere and is part of the management, education, assessment and computer science fields. The E-Assessment website named “Cluster” records in its database the students, the course material, the teams and the hierarchical relationships between the students. For the present research, the hierarchical relationships are team member, team leader and group administrator appointments. The group administrators have the responsibility to supervise team leaders. The experimentation of the application has been performed by high school students in geology courses and Canadian army cadets for navigation patrols in teams. This research extends the work of Nance that uses a hierarchical aggregation process similar as the one implemented in the “Cluster” application. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-learning" title="e-learning">e-learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-assessment" title=" e-assessment"> e-assessment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teamwork%20assessment" title=" teamwork assessment"> teamwork assessment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hierarchical%20aggregate%20assessment" title=" hierarchical aggregate assessment"> hierarchical aggregate assessment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2666/an-e-assessment-website-to-implement-hierarchical-aggregate-assessment" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2666.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">369</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13652</span> The Quantitative Analysis of the Influence of the Superficial Abrasion on the Lifetime of the Frog Rail</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dong%20Jiang">Dong Jiang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Turnout is the essential equipment on the railway, which also belongs to one of the strongest demanded infrastructural facilities of railway on account of the more seriously frog rail failures. In cooperation with Germany Company (DB Systemtechnik AG), our research team focuses on the quantitative analysis about the frog rails to predict their lifetimes. Moreover, the suggestions for the timely and effective maintenances are made to improve the economy of the frog rails. The lifetime of the frog rail depends strongly on the internal damage of the running surface until the breakages occur. On the basis of Hertzian theory of the contact mechanics, the dynamic loads of the running surface are calculated in form of the contact pressures on the running surface and the equivalent tensile stress inside the running surface. According to material mechanics, the strength of the frog rail is determined quantitatively in form of the Stress-cycle (S-N) curve. Under the interaction between the dynamic loads and the strength, the internal damage of the running surface is calculated by means of the linear damage hypothesis of the Miner’s rule. The emergence of the first Breakage on the running surface is to be defined as the failure criterion that the damage degree equals 1.0. From the microscopic perspective, the running surface of the frog rail is divided into numerous segments for the detailed analysis. The internal damage of the segment grows slowly in the beginning and disproportionately quickly in the end until the emergence of the breakage. From the macroscopic perspective, the internal damage of the running surface develops simply always linear along the lifetime. With this linear growth of the internal damages, the lifetime of the frog rail could be predicted simply through the immediate introduction of the slope of the linearity. However, the superficial abrasion plays an essential role in the results of the internal damages from the both perspectives. The influences of the superficial abrasion on the lifetime are described in form of the abrasion rate. It has two contradictory effects. On the one hand, the insufficient abrasion rate causes the concentration of the damage accumulation on the same position below the running surface to accelerate the rail failure. On the other hand, the excessive abrasion rate advances the disappearance of the head hardened surface of the frog rail to result in the untimely breakage on the surface. Thus, the relationship between the abrasion rate and the lifetime is subdivided into an initial phase of the increased lifetime and a subsequent phase of the more rapid decreasing lifetime with the continuous growth of the abrasion rate. Through the compensation of these two effects, the critical abrasion rate is discussed to reach the optimal lifetime. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=breakage" title="breakage">breakage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=critical%20abrasion%20rate" title=" critical abrasion rate"> critical abrasion rate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=frog%20rail" title=" frog rail"> frog rail</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=internal%20damage" title=" internal damage"> internal damage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimal%20lifetime" title=" optimal lifetime"> optimal lifetime</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91409/the-quantitative-analysis-of-the-influence-of-the-superficial-abrasion-on-the-lifetime-of-the-frog-rail" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91409.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">227</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13651</span> Developing Heat-Power Efficiency Criteria for Characterization of Technosphere Structural Elements</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Victoria%20Y.%20Garnova">Victoria Y. Re-engineering of machine tools, in terms of design and failure analysis, is defined as steps performed on an obsolete machine to return it to a new machine with the warranty that matches the customer requirement. To understand the future fatigue behavior of the used machine components, it is important to investigate the possible causes of machine parts failure through design, surface, and material inspections. In this study, the failure modes of the shaft of the rotary draw bending machine are inspected. Furthermore, stress and deflection analysis of the shaft subjected to combined torsion and bending loads are carried out by an analytical method and compared with a finite element analysis method. The theoretical fatigue strength, correction factors, and fatigue life sustained by the shaft before damaged are estimated by creating a stress-cycle (S-N) diagram. In conclusion, it is seen that the shaft can work in the second life, but it needs some surface treatments to increase the reliability and fatigue life. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=failure%20analysis" title="failure analysis">failure analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fatigue%20life" title=" fatigue life"> fatigue life</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=FEM%20analysis" title=" FEM analysis"> FEM analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shaft" title=" shaft"> shaft</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress%20analysis" title=" stress analysis"> stress analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79871/failure-analysis-and-fatigue-life-estimation-of-a-shaft-of-a-rotary-draw-bending-machine" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79871.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">304</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13649</span> Estimation of the Length and Location of Ground Surface Deformation Caused by the Reverse Faulting</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nader%20Khalafian">Nader Khalafian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohsen%20Ghaderi"> Mohsen Ghaderi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Field observations have revealed many examples of structures which were damaged due to ground surface deformation caused by the faulting phenomena. In this paper some efforts were made in order to estimate the length and location of the ground surface where large displacements were created due to the reverse faulting. This research has conducted in two steps; (1) in the first step, a 2D explicit finite element model were developed using ABAQUS software. A subroutine for Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion with strain softening model was developed by the authors in order to properly model the stress strain behavior of the soil in the fault rapture zone. The results of the numerical analysis were verified with the results of available centrifuge experiments. Reasonable coincidence was found between the numerical and experimental data. (2) In the second step, the effects of the fault dip angle (δ), depth of soil layer (H), dilation and friction angle of sand (ψ and φ) and the amount of fault offset (d) on the soil surface displacement and fault rupture path were investigated. An artificial neural network-based model (ANN), as a powerful prediction tool, was developed to generate a general model for predicting faulting characteristics. A properly sized database was created to train and test network. It was found that the length and location of the zone of displaced ground surface can be accurately estimated using the proposed model. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reverse%20faulting" title="reverse faulting">reverse faulting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=surface%20deformation" title=" surface deformation"> surface deformation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=numerical" title=" numerical"> numerical</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neural%20network" title=" neural network"> neural network</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/39081/estimation-of-the-length-and-location-of-ground-surface-deformation-caused-by-the-reverse-faulting" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/39081.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">421</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13648</span> The System of Uniform Criteria for the Characterization and Evaluation of Elements of Economic Structure: The Territory, Infrastructure, Processes, Technological Chains, the End Products</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aleksandr%20A.%20Gajour">Aleksandr A. The water quality index (WQI), Mann–Kendall (MK) test, and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were used in oder to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of the surface water quality in the study area. Eleven hydrochemical parameters were measured monthly at eight stations from January 2016 to December 2020. The dominant cation in the surface water was found to be calcium, followed by sodium, and the dominant anion was sulfate, followed by chloride. In terms of WQI, a significant percentage of surface water samples at stations Ain Smara (AS), Beni Haroune (BH), Grarem (GR), and Sidi Khlifa (SK) exhibited poor water quality, with approximately 89.5%, 90.6%, 78.2%, and 62.7%, respectively, falling into this category. Mann–Kendall trend analysis revealed a significantly increasing trend in WQI values at stations Oued Boumerzoug (ON) and SK, indicating that the temporal variation of WQI in these stations is significant. Hierarchical clustering analysis classified the data into three clusters. The first cluster contained approximately 22% of the total number of months, the second cluster included about 30%, and the third cluster had the highest representation, approximately 48% of the total number of months. Within these clusters, certain stations exhibited higher WQI values. In the first cluster, stations GR and ON had the highest WQI values. In the second cluster, stations Oued Boumerzoug (OB) and SK showed the highest WQI values, while in the last cluster, stations AS, BH, El Milia (EM), and Hammam Grouz (HG) had the highest mean WQI values. Also, approximately 38%, 41%, and 38% of the total water samples in the first, second, and third clusters, respectively, were classified as having poor water quality. The findings of this study can serve as a scientific basis for decision-makers to formulate strategies for surface water quality restoration and management in the region. <p
