The statement follows the miraculous feeding of the 5,000, which sets the stage for Jesus to reveal deeper spiritual truths. The reference to His flesh as "real food" is a metaphorical expression, pointing to the necessity of accepting His sacrifice for eternal life. In Jewish culture, bread was a staple, symbolizing sustenance and life. Jesus uses this imagery to convey that just as physical bread sustains physical life, His flesh, offered on the cross, sustains spiritual life. This statement also foreshadows the Last Supper, where Jesus institutes the Eucharist, symbolizing His body given for humanity. The concept of eating His flesh is a call to internalize His teachings and accept His atoning work.
and My blood is real drink
In Jewish tradition, blood was considered sacred and was not to be consumed, as it represented life (Leviticus 17:11). Jesus' declaration that His blood is "real drink" would have been shocking to His audience, emphasizing the radical nature of His message. This phrase underscores the importance of His sacrificial death, where His blood would be shed for the remission of sins. It points to the New Covenant, prophesied in Jeremiah 31:31-34, where God promises to write His law on the hearts of His people. The drinking of His blood symbolizes the acceptance of this New Covenant and the cleansing power of His sacrifice. This imagery is fulfilled in the practice of Communion, where believers partake in the wine, representing Jesus' blood, as a remembrance of His death and a proclamation of His life-giving power.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The central figure in this passage, Jesus is teaching about the spiritual significance of His sacrifice.

2. Disciples
Those who follow Jesus and are present during His teaching, struggling to understand the deeper meaning of His words.

3. Jewish Audience
The broader group of listeners, including skeptics and religious leaders, who are challenged by Jesus' radical statements.

4. Capernaum
The location where Jesus delivers this teaching, a town on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

5. Passover Context
The backdrop of this discourse, which is significant as it ties Jesus' teaching to the sacrificial lamb of Passover.
Teaching Points
Understanding Spiritual Nourishment
Jesus' statement about His flesh and blood as real food and drink emphasizes the necessity of spiritual sustenance found in Him alone. It is an answer, too, to the question. How can this Man give us His flesh to eat? (John 6:52.)

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 55. - A new justification is given for this great statement: For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. (The two active verbals are adopted, "eating," "drinking;" but βρῶσις and πόσις are used very frequently by the Attic writers for "food" and "drink," as well as for the processes of eating and drinking.) That is, Christ's flesh and blood stand in the same relation to the true life of man that food and drink do to the physical life of earth; and so, unless we duly and fully assimilate Divine humanity, we have no life in us. If we cannot assimilate food, we die. It must become part of our life blood and permeate our system; so "the coming and believing" must mean such an acceptance of the Christ that the love of God penetrates our whole being, "even the joints and marrow of soul and spirit;" unless it does so, we have no life in us. Lange, even here, presses the idea of the flesh and blood of Christ as being true food, seeing that by believing historic contemplation we participate in the "historic form of his manifestation," and by spiritual contemplation and fervent faith we drink in the blood which is the life. The difference between ἀληθής and ἀληθῶς is nearly that between ἀληθής and ἀληθίνος. The former is the antithesis of the merely apparent food; the latter would have meant genuine food answering to the ideal of food. "The true food" is the food for the inner man - food in all reality. The Lord was speaking to them of a unique relation which he sustained to the human race, and which cannot be explained away into some mere euphemism for the blessedness and stimulating character of the gospel message. This is made still more evident by his next words -

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
For
γὰρ (gar)
Conjunction
Strong's 1063: For.
