MONTO is a combination of various ontologies. After presenting a review of the literature of problem solving and math education, this paper presents a framework that is used for evaluation of the systems available in the literature for teaching problem solving in mathematics. This paper analyzes the existing systems and evaluates them against the framework to state the gaps. It also describes MONTO and demonstrates its use. In this paper we propose a framework for an ontology-based interactive tutoring system. System is composed of four interconnected components, a tutor module, a light-weight student modeler, an assessor and a reasoning engine. The system is fully automated as tries to tutor a domain ontology without a specific curriculum or topic ontology. Our proposed approach gives extra authority to the users to explore all available information and switch between learning and evaluation based on their preferences. Thus, it seams to be more appropriate for intermediate students that have preliminary knowledge about the domain and not for novitiates.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"An ontology-based intelligent tutoring system","attachmentId":34285914,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/7773916/An_ontology_based_intelligent_tutoring_system","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Intelligent tutoring systems: an ontology-based approach
Kenneth De Jong

2004

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Intelligent tutoring systems: an ontology-based approach","attachmentId":107742911,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/109695394/Intelligent_tutoring_systems_an_ontology_based_approach","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Modeling and Evaluation of the Mathematical Educational Ontology
Olga Nevzorova

2019

In this paper, we discuss the current stage of development of the educational mathematical ontology OntoMath, firstly presented by us at INTED 2019 and CICM 2019. The ontology is organized in three layers: a foundational ontology layer, a domain ontology layer and a linguistic layer. The domain ontology layer contains language-independent concepts, covering secondary school mathematics curriculum. The linguistic layer provides linguistic grounding for these concepts, and the foundation ontology layer provides them with meta-ontological annotations. Often timesfound difficult to solve. The reason for their difficulty is because of miscomprehension and the inability to formulate a mathematical representation of the text. In this paper we present a framework based on fuzzy logicontology model that interprets a mathematical word problem in natural language and compute a solution. This framework uses ontology as a working memory and search engine to compute the solution. Fuzzy logic is used to determine the confidence of result returned, which could eliminate the confusion for a user trying to determine if the solution provided is correct. The ability to interpret a mathematical word problem and return a detailed solution will help educated users by providing them detailed steps of a solution.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"A Novel Framework for Math Word Problem Solving","attachmentId":47133517,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/10778861/A_Novel_Framework_for_Math_Word_Problem_Solving","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Ontology A Tool for Managing Domain Module in an Intelligent Tutoring System
Salisu Muhammad

Third International Conference on Advances in Computing, Electronics and Electrical Technology - CEET 2015, 2015

ABSTARCT-The intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) is the most recent alternative advancement to human tutors in the teaching and learning processes in today's educational environments that started over the past three decades. This specific activity attached to mathematics caught the attention of many researchers in mathematics education (Charnay &, 1987; Houdement,1999), but also in cognitive psychology (Vergnaud, 1997; Fayol&,1996). In science, problem solving takes a prominent place. Generally, this is the method used to diagnose the problems and deficiencies student and to assess its mastery to various didactic concepts. It is therefore important to help the student in solving exercises, diagnose problems and intervene appropriately based on their profile. The purpose of this article is to make a model (Onto E-orientation-Math-Bridge) to guide the Moroccan profile to the most appropriate exercises to his skills, preferences and motivation. This model allows to mix two models: E-orientation model (Guerss F., Ait daoud M. & al, 2014; Guerss F., Ait daoud M. & al, 2015) that allows the orientation of Moroccan students remotely according to their profiles And extended ontology of Math-Bridge project (Lmati &, 2014). TURING is a multidisciplinary project, that joints recent research in didactic of mathematics with the possibilities of computer-based learning environments. From the educational point of view, the system is helpful for the secondary school student to improve problem solving aptitudes, mathematical reasoning abilities and communication skills using natural and mathematical language. In addition, the system is helpful to assist the teacher in his responsibility of attending the diversity of the development of mathematical competences in a whole class. From the technical point of view, the TURING architecture is a multi-agent system conceived in a flexible approach so that a teacher can adjust the heuristic and discursive features according to specific practices with real students. In particular, for the discovery of a conjecture or for the realization of a mathematical proof, the system consents to adapt, in the problem solving process, the space of meaningful actions and, in argumentative process, the set of strategic messages with pedagogical agents.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Development of an Intelligent Tutorial System to Enhance Students' Mathematical Competence in Problem Solving","attachmentId":3914064,"attachmentType":"","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/697590/Development_of_an_Intelligent_Tutorial_System_to_Enhance_Students_Mathematical_Competence_in_Problem_Solving","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Development of support facilities for arithmetical word problem exercises in intelligent tutoring system
Tsukasa Hirashima

Electronics and Communications in Japan Part Iii-fundamental Electronic Science, 1992

In the problem solving of the arithmetical word problems, the process until the solution method is identified as the most important. It is necessary to design and develop the basic functions for exercise problem support in an intelligent tutoring system (ITS), such as problem solving, problem generation, and problem explanation, aiming at the support for the identification of the solution method. In this study, those three basic functions are realized based on the problem-solving method MIPS (model of indexing in problem solving). This paper describes the problem-solving module, the problem-generation module and the problem-explanation module. The problem-solving module not only solves the arithmetical word problem but also generates the cognitive description of the identification process for the solution method. The problem-generation module can generate the problem which specifies what students should do in the identification process. The problem explanation module can indicate the equivalence and difference between any two problems concerning the identification process.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Development of support facilities for arithmetical word problem exercises in intelligent tutoring system","attachmentId":47029508,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/10915141/Development_of_support_facilities_for_arithmetical_word_problem_exercises_in_intelligent_tutoring_system","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

A Pedagogical Ontology as a Playground in Adaptive Elearning Environments
Alexander Streicher

In former concepts for programmed instruction (PI), intelligent tutoring sys tems (ITS), adaptive learning environments (ALE), and pedagogical recom mender system (PRE) learning is understood as similar to algorithms as a clearly describable, logical, and in this respect serious process. With this background it is attempted to create a complete description of teaching and learning for a precise support and control of learning processes in order to re place teachers. In contrast to this concept, learning in pedagogy is usually conceived as a process that cannot be fully described or understood. Teaching and learning require human understanding and thus human communication is necessary to foster learning. From this perspective, the possibilities for PI, ITS, ALE and PRE are restricted. It is assumed that within these restrictions reasonable concepts can be developed. As one approach it is suggested to re fer to the pedagogical theory of play and the understanding of pedagogical actions as art. Based on these approaches we understand the design of auto matic educational reasoning (AER) systems for learning like the creation of tools for artists. As tools we suggest a pedagogical ontology, a learner model and a reasoning engine. With these tools, teachers can create playground equipment that is played with by students. .

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"A Pedagogical Ontology as a Playground in Adaptive Elearning Environments","attachmentId":46611395,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/26297577/A_Pedagogical_Ontology_as_a_Playground_in_Adaptive_Elearning_Environments","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Modeling of Didactic Relationships in the OntoMathEDU Educational Mathematical Ontology
Olga Nevzorova

2021

We discuss the system of didactic relationships of the OntoMath educational mathematical ontology.
