And it was <i>the</i> sabbath on that day. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The Jews, therefore, said to him who had been cured, "It is <i>the</i> sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed." <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But he answered them, "He Who made me well, the Same said to me, <FR>'Take up your bed and walk.'<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They asked him, "Who is the Man That said to you, <FR>'Take up your bed, and walk?'"<Fr> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And he who was healed knew not Who it was; for Jesus withdrew, a multitude being in the place. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple. And He said to him, <FR>"Behold, you have been made well; sin no more, lest something worse befall you."<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who made him well.<p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Father and the Son<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And, on this account, the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on <i>the</i> sabbath. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But He answered them, <FR>"My Father worketh even until now, and I work."<Fr><p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For this cause, therefore, the Jews were seeking the more to kill Him, because He not only broke <i>the</i> sabbath, but also called God His Father, making Himself equal with God.<p> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, answered and said to them, <FR>"Verily, verily, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father doing; for whatsoever things He doeth, these also, in like manner, the Son doeth.<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span><FR>For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth Him all things which He Himself doeth; and greater works than these will He show Him, that ye may marvel.<Fr> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><FR>For, as the Father raiseth the dead, and maketh <i>them</i> alive; so also the Son maketh alive whom He willeth.<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><FR>For neither doth the Father judge any one, but all judgment He hath given to the Son;<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span><FR>that all may honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He that honors not the Son honors not the Father Who sent Him.<Fr><p> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>"Verily, verily, I say to you, He that hears My word, and believes Him Who sent Me, has eternal life, and comes not into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.<Fr><p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>Verily, verily, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard shall live.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>For, as the Father hath life in Himself, so also He gave to the Son to have life in Himself;<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is <i>the</i> Son of Man.<Fr> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>Marvel not at this; because there is an hour coming, in which all who are in their tombs shall hear His voice,<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>and come forth; those who did good, to the resurrection of life; <i>but</i> those who practiced evil, to the resurrection of judgment.<Fr><p> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>I can of Myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous; because I seek not My Own will, but the will of Him Who sent Me.<Fr><p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Testimonies about Jesus<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>If I testify concerning Myself, My testimony is not true.<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>There is Another Who testifieth concerning Me; and I know that the testimony which He testifieth concerning Me is true.<Fr><p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><FR>Ye have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.<Fr> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span><FR>But the testimony I receive is not from man; but these things I say, that ye may be saved.<Fr> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span><FR>He was a lamp that was burning and shining; and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.<Fr><p> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>But I have a testimony greater than <i>that of</i> John; for the works which the Father hath given Me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing testify concerning Me, that the Father hath sent Me.<Fr><p> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/5-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span><FR>And the Father Who sent Me, He hath testified concerning Me.
