La plaquette dont il est question ici est publiée dans le deuxième volume, p. 15, n° 346. L’INHA met à disposition une version en ligne du catalogue.">1</a></sup>. Ces bas-reliefs en bronze de petite taille, produits essentiellement pendant la Renaissance, se distinguent des médailles, à visée commémorative, par leur dimension narrative. Elles prennent généralement pour thèmes des récits bibliques ou mythologiques, ainsi que des épisodes de l’histoire antique ; elles sont souvent issues du moulage d’œuvres d’orfèvrerie, ont des usages variés (<em>ricordi</em>, baisers de paix, éléments décoratifs intégrés dans des petits objets, agrafes de vêtements, enseignes…) et constituent fréquemment des multiples.</p> <p>Au sein du corpus établi par Molinier se trouve une plaquette représentant <em>Septime Sévère ordonnant la décapitation du corps de Clodius Albinus</em>, dont il repère un exemplaire au musée de Berlin<sup><a href="#footnote_1_13115" id="identifier_1_13115" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Wilhelm Bode, Beschreibung der Bildwerke der christlichen Epoche…, Berlin, W. Spemann, 1888, p. 218, n° 954.">2</a></sup> et dont il remarque qu’elle correspond à l’empreinte d’une intaille<sup><a href="#footnote_2_13115" id="identifier_2_13115" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Selon une pratique courante, des empreintes métalliques ont été prises de l’intaille : il est ainsi possible de dénombrer une ou deux plaquettes en plomb (Londres, British Museum et à l’Accademia Carrara de Bergame), ainsi que trois autres en bronze (Berlin, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Florence, museo Horne et Paris, musée du Louvre). Les modalités et les finalités de ces reproductions restent l’objet de recherches : s’agit-il de ricordi, de modèle d’ateliers, de reproductions exécutées par des marchands ou par des ateliers dans une perspective de diffusion ? Il attribue alors l’intaille et la plaquette à Galeazzo Mondella. Cet artiste, élogieusement cité par <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/11927728/giorgio_vasari/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vasari</a><sup><a href="#footnote_4_13115" id="identifier_4_13115" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="« Galeazzo Mondella, il quale, oltre all’intagliar le gioie, disegnò benissimo », soit « Galeazzo Mondella, qui, en plus de tailler des bijoux, dessinait très bien » in Giorgio Vasari, Delle Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori et architetti, édition de 1568, III, p. 288.">5</a></sup>, était ainsi associé pour la première fois à des œuvres apparemment signées : en effet, sur le billot où le bourreau s’apprête à décapiter<a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/16296217/clodius_albinus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Clodius Albinus</a>, apparaissent les lettres « STGM ». Le conservateur prend cependant soin de noter la faiblesse évidente de cette attribution : l’interprétation ne repose que sur les deux dernières lettres du monogramme, sans apporter de lumière sur le début de l’inscription. L’acquisition en 2021 par le<a href="https://www.bnf.fr/fr/departement-monnaies-medailles-antiques" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Département des Monnaies, médailles et antiques</a> d’un exemplaire de cette plaquette<sup><a href="#footnote_5_13115" id="identifier_5_13115" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Exemplaire provenant de la collection Larminet-Davioud, mise en vente le 27 janvier 2021 à Paris par Pierre Bergé et Associés.">6</a></sup> vient heureusement offrir un pendant à l’intaille dans les collections de la <a href="https://www.bnf.fr/fr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bibliothèque nationale de France</a>. spectacle, de ses décors, de ses costumes, peut constituer un long processus jalonné parfois par la réapparition inopinée et progressive sur le marché de l’art de dessins, voire s’apparenter à un parcours semé de pièges quand, en particulier, certains de ces témoins portent des inscriptions d’époque fautives. Aussi est-il vital de confronter cette iconographie non seulement avec les didascalies des livrets mais aussi avec toutes les données, même lacunaires, fournies par les archives et quelquefois par la presse contemporaine de la création de l’ouvrage.</p> <p style="text-align: justify">On verra ici que, contrairement aux apparences, des projets de décors annotés <a href="https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb309787158" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Mystères d’Isis</em></a>, selon le titre choisi pour les représentations de <em>La Flûte enchantée</em> de <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/14027233/wolfgang_amadeus_mozart/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mozart</a> (1756-1791) à l’Opéra de Paris en 1801, se rapportent en réalité à une autre œuvre, donnée l’année suivante dans le même théâtre. Il s’agit de <a href="https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb409166470" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Sémiramis</em></a>, une tragédie lyrique en trois actes de <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/14785137/charles-simon_catel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Charles-Simon Catel</a> (1773-1830), professeur au Conservatoire de Musique et auteur d’un <a href="https://catalogue.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb42896753z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Traité d’harmonie</em></a> en 1801. Si <em>Les Mystères d’Isis</em> et <em>Sémiramis</em> ont en commun de traiter d’un sujet oriental – l’un se situant dans l’Égypte antique, l’autre à Babylone –, leurs décors ne sauraient être confondus. BnF, département Bibliothèque-musée de l’opéra, <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b52514002x" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BIJOUX 219 Bis</a></figcaption></figure> <p> </p> <p>L’exposition <a href="https://www.operadeparis.fr/visites/expositions/les-bijoux-de-lopera?medium=&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7vz1roGdiwMVVj4GAB0tiBk0EAAYASAAEgLSaPD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Bijoux de scène de l’Opéra de Paris</em></a>, qui se tient jusqu’au 28 mars 2025 à la <a href="https://www.bnf.fr/fr/opera" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bibliothèque-musée de l’Opéra</a> au Palais Garnier à Paris, est l’occasion d’admirer de splendides accessoires de scène imitant à la perfection l’or et les pierres précieuses . Façonnés en laiton doré et en verre, ces couronnes, casques, colliers, ceintures et bracelets, issus des grands œuvres lyriques du XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle, reflètent notamment le goût pour l’antique des librettistes et des costumiers.</p> <p>Cette coiffe, formée d’un serre-tête orné de trois ombelles de papyrus, est composée d’une structure en laiton imitant l’or parsemée de pierres vertes brillant comme des émeraudes. BnF, Bibliothèque-musée de l’Opéra, <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb426793398" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESTAMPES SCENES Salammbo (18)</a></figcaption></figure> <p>Elle a été portée par la cantatrice <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/fr/ark:/12148/cb13926819m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rose Caron</a>, <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53117865z/f1.item.zoom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interprète du rôle-titre</a>, lors des représentations de <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb396844549" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Salammbô</em> </a>en 1892, à l’opéra de Paris. Créé en 1890 à Bruxelles, l’opéra est l’œuvre du librettiste <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb11900715t#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Camille Du Locle</a> (1832-1903) qui eut fort à faire pour adapter le récit épique de Gustave Flaubert publié en 1862. L’œuvre est portée par la musique d’<a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8424127v/f1.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ernest Reyer</a> (1823-1909) qui s’intéressait à ce roman dès sa parution, véritable « opéra littéraire » selon les critiques de l’époque.</p> <p>Pour les costumes, l’Opéra fait appel à <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb148208163" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eugène Lacoste</a> (1818-1907), réputé ses recherches documentaires rigoureuses et pour ses esquisses détaillées dans la création des costumes et des bijoux. Lors de sa longue et prolifique carrière pour les grands théâtres parisiens, il a dessiné pour d’autres opéras inspirés de l’Antiquité tels que <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b84557116" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Aïda</em> </a>(1880) et <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb40916641x" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Sapho</em></a> (1884), <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb40916622n" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Salammbô</em></a> étant son dernier pour l’Opéra de Paris. Lacoste, que l’Opéra avait délaissé et auquel il a eu raison de demander son concours, s’est inspiré, pour les dessiner, des indications du roman, parfois assez précises […], mais le plus souvent de ses études particulières pendant le cours de sa longue carrière.
