The term is used in various contexts throughout the Scriptures, both in literal and metaphorical senses.

Geographical Significance:

1. Direction and Orientation:
The south is frequently mentioned as a cardinal direction. In the ancient Near Eastern context, directions were significant for navigation and understanding territorial boundaries. For instance, in Genesis 13:14, God instructs Abram, "Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west."

2. Regions and Territories:
The term "South" is often associated with specific regions, such as the Negev, a desert region in southern Israel. The Negev is mentioned in Genesis 12:9, where Abram journeyed toward the Negev. This area was known for its arid climate and sparse population, yet it played a crucial role in the narratives of the patriarchs.

3. Egypt and Surrounding Areas:
Egypt, located to the south of Israel, is frequently referenced in the Bible. It was a place of refuge and bondage for the Israelites. In Isaiah 30:6, the "land of the south" is mentioned in the context of a prophecy against relying on Egypt for help.

Symbolic and Theological Implications:

1. Judgment and Deliverance:
The south can symbolize both judgment and deliverance. In Ezekiel 20:46-47, the prophet is instructed to set his face toward the south and prophesy against the forest land of the Negev, symbolizing impending judgment. Conversely, the south can also represent deliverance, as seen in Zechariah 9:14, where the LORD is depicted as appearing over His people, with His arrow flashing like lightning from the south.

2. Wisdom and Seeking God:
The Queen of Sheba, who came from the south to hear Solomon's wisdom, is a notable figure. In Matthew 12:42, Jesus refers to her as the "Queen of the South," highlighting her pursuit of wisdom and her recognition of God's work through Solomon.

3. Spiritual Journey:
The south can also represent a spiritual journey or pilgrimage. In Acts 8:26, an angel of the Lord instructs Philip to go south to the road that descends from Jerusalem to Gaza. This journey leads to the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch, symbolizing the spread of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Cultural and Historical Context:

In the ancient world, the south was often associated with warmth, fertility, and abundance due to its climate. However, it was also seen as a place of desolation and wilderness, as exemplified by the Negev. This duality is reflected in the biblical narrative, where the south serves as both a place of trial and a land of promise.

Overall, the concept of "South" in the Bible encompasses a rich tapestry of meanings, from geographical locations and historical events to profound spiritual lessons and divine interventions.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Hebrews Negeb, that arid district to the south of Palestine through which lay the caravan route from Central Palestine to Egypt (Genesis 12:9; 13:1, 3; 46:1-6). "The Negeb comprised a considerable but irregularly-shaped tract of country, its main portion stretching from the mountains and lowlands of Judah in the north to the mountains of Azazemeh in the south, and from the Dead Sea and southern Ghoron the east to the Mediterranean on the west." In Ezek. 20:46 (21:1 in Hebrews) three different Hebrew words are all rendered "south." (1) "Set thy face toward the south" (Teman, the region on the right, 1 Samuel 33:24); (2) "Drop thy word toward the south" (Negeb, the region of dryness, Joshua 15:4); (3) "Prophesy against the forest of the south field" (Darom, the region of brightness, Deuteronomy 33:23). In Job 37:9 the word "south" is literally "chamber," used here in the sense of treasury (Comp. 38:22; Psalm 135:7).
