href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130127060751/http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/LDE64C13V.htm" class="external" target="_blank">Reuters) – Wailing with grief and rage, Iraqi Christians this week buried the teenage victim of a bombing and lamented again their vulnerability in the complex stew of Iraq’s sectarian warfare and Arab-Kurd disputes.

Thousands turned out for the funeral of Sandy Shibib, 19, a first-year biology student at Mosul University, who died on Tuesday from head wounds caused by shrapnel when bombers struck buses carrying Christian students in northern Iraq on May 2.

"As students, we were heading to university, not to a battlefield. We carried no weapons. Nevertheless, we were targeted," said Maha Tuma, a schoolmate of Shibib.

"May God rest her soul and give patience to her family," Tuma said, sobbing at Shibib’s burial early on Tuesday at the cemetery of Bahnam and Sara church in Qaraqush.

Numbering some 750,000 in a predominantly Muslim nation of about 30 million, Christians are trapped in the crossfire of sectarian strife and a simmering feud in disputed northern areas over land and some of the world’s richest oilfields.

Hundreds of thousands of Christians — who Pope Benedict called "the most vulnerable religious minority in Iraq" in a Vatican appeal for better security — have left their country since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The United Nations said around 4,100 Christians fled the restive northern city of Mosul, perhaps Iraq’s most dangerous place, between Feb. 20 and 27 after attacks in which eight Christians died; shot in the street, or at work.

The four buses that carried Sandy Shibib and other students were travelling from the largely Christian district of Qaraqush, in the town of Hamdaniya, to Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, when the bombers attacked.

ORIGINAL SETTLERS

Qaraqush is located among the mostly Christian towns of the Nineveh plain. Christians believe they were the first settlers in the area, their roots tracing back hundreds of years before Christ to the Assyrians, one of the most famous civilizations born in Mesopotamia, the historical name of Iraq.

"Christians are the original people of this area," said Louis Marqush Ayoub, a member of the Hamdaniya municipal council. "We Christians have not been a part of any conflict concerning power in Iraq. What is going on is a part of political, foreign and regional agendas."

The Nineveh plain includes disputed areas that Kurds want to fold into the virtually autonomous northern region known as Iraqi Kurdistan. Those demands have been rejected by the central government in Baghdad and by Iraqi Arab factions.

The disputed areas include Kirkuk, a city with an unsettled mix of Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen and others that sits atop what U.S. officials say may be 4 percent of the world’s oil reserves.

"The majority of Christians are living in the disputed areas. Because of this, they are now under the agenda of the internal groups, especially Kurds and Arab Sunnis," said William Warda, chairman of the Hammurabi Human Rights organization.

‘WEAKEST LINK’

Christians have tried to keep a low profile during the sectarian warfare between Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims unleashed by the U.S. invasion but they have come under attack nonetheless. Bombers target churches and kidnappers hold priests for ransom.

It is frequently unclear who is attacking Christians and why. Some see an official hand at work. Others say the motive could be as simple as robbery or extortion.

Sunni Islamist extremists may despise them because they are Christians. Kurdish factions may covet their land or want to prevent them from voting for opponents.

"There is a kind of plan to move the Christians and to put pressure on them … Christians do not have protection, nor do they have a militia," Warda said. "They are the weakest link in the chain."

Because of the attacks, the Christian students of Hamdaniya have stopped going to Mosul University, the only university in Nineveh province. Dozens staged sit-ins this week to press authorities to find them a refuge for final exams.

"Because of physical injuries and psychological damages we suffered from these attacks, we call on the prime minister and the minister of higher education to allow us to take the exams in our town, Qaraqush, or any peaceful and safe place,"

<div protested in northern Iraq on Monday to condemn a bomb attack on a bus carrying students and workers which left one person dead and 80 wounded.

"We are not a minority, we are an authentic part of the Iraqi people," said a banner at the demonstration. "We ask the prime minister (Nuri al-Maliki) to stop the tragedy of the Christians," it added.

The attack, comprising a car bomb and an improvised explosive device, took place on a highway about three kilometres east of Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province, on Sunday.

Monday’s protest in Hamdaniyah, a Christian area, from where the bombing’s victims had been travelling to the University of Mosul.

Church leaders, supported by Arab tribes, led between 2,500-3,000 people at the demonstration.

"The government is silent and is doing nothing about (the trouble) we face," said Basim Sameer, a 47-year-old engineer.

In November, the New York-based Human Rights Watch warned that minorities including Christians were the collateral victims of a conflict between Arabs and Kurds over control of disputed oil-rich provinces in northern Iraq.

While sectarian violence has dropped dramatically across Iraq since its peak between 2005 and 2007, attacks remain common, especially in Baghdad and Mosul.

<a Hundreds of Christian families have fled their homes in the last two days in Mosul and it’s suburbs in terror for their lives.

Hundreds of families adds up to thousands of people As OCHA report in Iraq: Displacement in Mosul Situation Report No. 1 – 28 February 2010:

Following a series of attacks by unidentified armed groups against Christians in Mosul in Ninewa governorate during January and February 2010, some 683 Christian families (4,098 people) became displaced between 20 and 27 February 2010; most of the displacement occurred between 24 and 27 February.

That works out at roughly 1,000 people a day trying to escape the city in which they risk being hunted down and slaughtered by fleeing their homes.

Today Iraki Christians commemorated Archbishop Rahho and protested the latest wave of ethnic cleansing being launched against them. I saw the demonstration in Baghdad. It was in Firdous Square and consisted of a few dozen people carrying Iraki flags and shouting "Stop the killing of Christians".

The main demonstrations were by Mosul’s Christians There were protests in:

al-Batniya

al-Koush (al Qoush)

Bartalla

Hamdaniya

Mosul

Tal Keef

Tal Lasfaqa

Of these the biggest was in Hamdaniya — about 1,000 people took part led by their priests. The next largest was in Koush where several hundred people took place in a silent protest. Priests, bishops, archbishops, and even Cardinal Delly all spoke and all demanded concrete action be taken to protect their flock but on the basis of past experience they surely new that neither the government nor their tormentors would pay any heed.

The protests did not pass completely unnoticed, Reuters did reports both in Arabic and in English as did KUNA the Kuwaiti news agency, The Kurdish news agency AK News did two reports in Arabic.the first under the headline Baghdad’s Christians are demanding the Iraqi government protect them from targeting while the second dealt with Cardinal Delly’s demand for practical steps to be taken to protect Christians under the headline We will not accept our case being exploited for elections. While Al Jazeera English did a report headed Iraq’s Christians demand justice.

None of this of course is enough. The press will move on, and Irak’s Christians will continue to suffer sustained campaigns of ethnic cleansing almost unnoticed. The community is being ground out of existence, my colleagues in Mosul report that they and the Christian community expect the next phase of the ethnic cleansing campaign to re-focus on university students and on schools a fear borne out by this from the German Press Agency’s article Thousands of Iraqi Christians protest attacks in Mosul:

Already, some 1,500 Christian university students from Qaraqosh, roughly 30 kilometres to the east of Mosul, are being held at home because of fears their buses may be targeted, the head of Mosul University, Said al-Diwaji, told dpa.

Ah, yes, alas that sounds both very likely and painfully familiar:

Christian Students Bombed | Gorilla’s Guides | January 10, 2010:

An adhesive bomb was placed on a bus used for students at the University of Mosul. The bus is used to transport Christian students in Hamdania (40 kilometers east) to their lectures at the University. The blast wounded two students.

Mohammed Ibn Laith

Baghdadis were shocked by a wave of massive blasts that rocked the capital, leaving behind hundreds of civilian casualties in addition to major property losses.

"The level of insecurity in Iraq remains high and should not be accepted as somehow ‘normal’ or unavoidable," said Juan-Pedro Schaerer, head of the ICRC delegation for Iraq. In the governorates of Baghdad, Ninewa and Diyala, many Iraqis live in constant fear for their lives whenever they leave their houses, as anyone could be hit simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

To help medical facilities cope with the influx of wounded people, around nine tonnes of surgical materials and other medical supplies were delivered to Baghdad Teaching Hospital in Baghdad governorate, to Mosul General Hospital, Hamdaniya General Hospital and Bartilla primary health-care centre in Ninewa governorate, and to Dohuk Emergency Hospital in Dohuk governorate.

Helping families obtain information about their relatives missing since the 1990-1991 Gulf War

Hundreds of thousands of families in Iraq are longing to obtain news of those who vanished in the armed conflicts of recent decades. The authorities concerned must do everything in their power, in accordance with international humanitarian law, to clarify what happened to those who went missing in armed conflicts and to provide the families with any information they obtain.

The Technical Sub-Committee of the Tripartite Commission, investigating cases of persons missing in connection with the 1990-1991 Gulf War, held its 61st session in August in Kuwait. The meeting was chaired by the ICRC and attended by the Commission’s members: Iraq, Kuwait and the Coalition (France, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States). The members reiterated their commitment to take every possible measure to fulfil their obligations and provide information that could explain what happened to those who went missing. In particular, they took steps that are likely to lead to the exhumation of sites that have been identified in Iraq and Kuwait.

Visiting detainees and helping them to maintain contact with their families

The ICRC regularly visits detention facilities to monitor treatment and conditions of detention. In August, ICRC delegates visited detainees:

in US custody in Taji and Remembrance II, both in Baghdad Governorate;

held in Tobji Juvenile Detention Facility (Baghdad Governorate) under the authority of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, in Khalis Police Station (Diyala Governorate) under the authority of the Ministry of Interior, and in Fort Suse Federal Prison (Suleimaniya governorate) under the authority of the Ministry of Justice;

in 10 prisons in Erbil, Dohuk and Suleimaniya governorates under the authority of the Ministry of Social Affairs and various security forces in northern Iraq, including Assayesh.

The ICRC helps the detainees and their families to keep in touch by exchanging Red Cross messages, which are collected and distributed in cooperation with the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, and by providing financial support enabling families to travel to Basra, in the southern part of the country, to visit relatives detained in Camp Bucca. In August, more than 300 detainees were visited by their relatives and almost 4,750 Red Cross messages were exchanged within Iraq and with other countries.

Also in August, the ICRC helped eight foreign detainees released from Rusafa Prison in Baghdad to contact their respective embassies or the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to arrange for their return to their home countries. The ICRC directly facilitated the repatriations of a Bangladeshi, a Sudanese and a Palestinian, all of whom wanted to return home.

Support for limb-fitting centres

In addition to medical assistance provided for health facilities, the ICRC also supports 11 limb-fitting and rehabilitation centres run by the Iraqi Ministry of Health by providing equipment and training. In August, the ICRC awarded three-year scholarships to two Iraqis for training in prosthetics and orthotics, raising the number of scholarships granted to seven.

Delivering aid to displaced and otherwise vulnerable people

In August, the ICRC gave food parcels, rice bags, hygiene kits and towels sufficient for two months to about 15,600 internally displaced people (IDPs) – mainly families headed by women – in Baghdad, Diyala, Salah Al Din, Dohuk and Erbil governorates.

The ICRC also provides support for income-generating and livelihood projects that enable communities to regain economic self-sufficiency. For example, more than 2,000 workers are supporting their families on the income they receive repairing and cleaning irrigation canals in Diyala, Erbil and Kirkuk governorates under a cash-for-work programme.

In Kirkuk governorate, the ICRC vaccinated more than 21,700 sheep and 5,850 goats against pox. These animals provide an income for some 1,000 people.

Providing clean water

ICRC water engineers continued to repair and otherwise improve water infrastructure. In August, the ICRC:

completed repair work on Al Wathba water treatment plant in Baghdad, serving around 100,000 people;

installed a new submersible pump on the Korez bore well in Khanaqin town and connected it to the water network, thereby increasing the water supply for 660 residents;

cleaned and sterilized the storage tanks and repaired the operating theatre at Al Sadr Teaching Hospital in Najaf, which has 400 beds and serves around 546,000 inhabitants of Najaf city and nearby villages;

finished building Al Resalah primary health-care centre, which can treat around 50 people per day and serves around 25,000 people in Wassit governorate;

repaired two incinerators at Basra General Hospital, which has 600 beds;

increased the pumping capacity, re-operated the filters and replaced the chemical treatment units and electromechanical works in New Tikrit Stage II water treatment plant in Salah Al-Din governorate, which provides water for around 80,000 people;

finished building an emergency unit for al Hashimiyah Hospital, which has more than 100 beds, in Babil governorate;

repaired the water treatment plant in Mandali, Diyala governorate, improving the quality of water provided for around 20,000 people, and covered the X-ray room in Mandali’s primary health-care centre with lead protection sheets, in addition to carrying out electrical work there.

Water was delivered by truck to:

4,500 displaced people, Al Imam Ali General Hospital and eight primary health-care centres in Sadr City, Al Kindi General Hospital, Al Yarmouk Teaching Hospital, and Al Rashad Psychiatry Teaching Hospital, all in Baghdad.

Promoting international humanitarian law

Reminding parties to a conflict of their obligation to protect civilians is a fundamental part of the ICRC’s work. The organization also endeavours to promote international humanitarian law within civil society. Within this framework, a series of presentations was organized for various audiences all over Iraq.

Iraq is the ICRC’s second biggest operation worldwide, with more than 90 expatriates and around 530 national staff in Baghdad, Basra, Najaf, Erbil, Suleimaniya, Dohuk, Ramadi and Khanaqin responding to the urgent needs of civilians adversely affected by the conflict.

Source: Iraq: indiscriminate attacks take heavy toll on civilians –
