I planned to do this until the end of 2017, but time is limited and you will be faster with the deletion process than I will be able to create a process for referring and adding the references (with nothing knowing about programming or bots). Only for the field of badminton, where I was nearly the only one contributor, it would take one to two hours a day to keep Wikidata up to date. This is an amount hardly to realize all the time, and will be increased very much when items are deleted. So this means I have to give up. If somebody wants to start referring some suggestions: For people with results before 2015 all players should have at least a link in dewiki (a link, not an own page). For instance for the deleted Tamara Otene see :de:Spezial:Linkliste/Tamara_Otene. Sometimes there must be added (Badminton), for instance for the deleted Rachel Howard see :de:Spezial:Linkliste/Rachel_Howard_(Badminton) (there are also links without (Badminton) valid for the badminton player). For players with results in 2015 and later, a BWF ID should exist, to be determined with the link bwfbadminton.org/page.aspx?id=15539. After doing this for all players, only a few people without sources should remain. These players should be put on a maintenance page, and references must be found for them elsewhere (like in books, journals etc.). --Florentyna ([]) 15:58, 13 January 2017 (UTC) :: If an item haven't source, haven't backlink and haven't sitelink, isn't notable. Bounds were added by default for a long time, but by far not all quantities have uncertainties and bounds are thus not applicable. For badminton items, I find a lot of ±0 bounds in P1352 claims which seem to be removable, and some rather odd ±2 bounds that you added intentionally (example: Q27243726). While I don’t see a reason to keep the ±0 ones (all can be removed in a single edit per item), I’d like to ask what the meaning of the ±2 bounds should be, and whether we should keep them or try to find a better model. The ±1 bounds, ±2 bounds, ±3 bounds etc. must be kept. In the cited case the final standing is not known beyond rank 4, but 7±2 will cover all possible rankings. The 27913439 was an example in the linked discussion, but I can easily give you many more examples, like 27914425, 27914424 or 27914429. Almost every language has its own transcripition (or transliteration) rules and names transcribed using English rules are incorrect in other languages (in fact, e.g. original Belarusian cyrillic names would be in many cases better than English transcription). Unfortunately, many incorrect labels added by you would probably stay in WD for many years, as I don't think that there will be someone with enough time to check all the items. Wostr ([]) 21:22, 29 January 2018 (UTC) : I don't agree with you. All these people are also known with these transcriptions in Polish. Florentyna ([]) 17:22, 31 January 2018 (UTC) :::: Such names are used by Polish media only because regular newspaper employees do not know that English (or other language) transcription of cyrryllic names are incorrect in Polish language. Usually, nobody cares and such incorrect names are widely spread across many websites and even paper publications. But in fact, original cyrryllic name is better than foreign language transcription. What's more putting English transcriptions into Polish labels have clearly no value at all – if someone want to find an item using such transcription, it will be possible even without Polish (incorrect) label. :::: I can provide Russian/Byelorussian/Ukrainain→Polish transcription rules, but it would be impossible to use it without original cyrryllic name – so these rules would be of no use for you, because (correct me if I'm wrong) you're not using original names. I cannot, however, turn a blind eye to adding incorrect Polish (and I think, not only Polish) labels. Using incorrect names by some websites or other media is not an argument for adding it to WD. Wostr ([]) 19:06, 31 January 2018 (UTC) Since this page is still on my watchlist and I read this, may I interfere? * nameGuzzler and other automated label copy tools should indeed not be used if transcription between different scripts is involved—and that is actually the case here, as far as I see. The reason is that we usually use phonetic transcription for such cases, and that depends on both source and target language (to produce a readable, phonetically similar representation of the name in the target language). * It is true, however, that transcription is not always done properly by local media and the like. This is particularly the case for sportspersons, where the native name is often not very well known. In many cases the “English” transcription may qualify as an alias, although transcription to English is not as well defined as in many other languages. * Furthermore, it is advisable to store the native name in P1559—that would make some kind of automatic transcription possible. * Nevertheless, nameGuzzler is very useful if source and target language have the same script (holds at least for latin script, not fully sure of others). There are some exceptions such as Latvian or Czech language. Regards, —MisterSynergy ([]) 19:40, 31 January 2018 (UTC) * It is true that e.g. usually (but not always) labels can be copied within the Latin alphabet languages (e.g. German name would be the same in Polish etc.); the few exceptions include Latvian and I think Lithuanian (but I'm not so sure that Czech too [if Czech, then Slovak probably too]), where there is some kind of translation (not just transcription) of names from every language. So I have nothing against adding English, German etc. names, but adding English transcription of cyrryllic names is a different thing. Here is the problem that original cyrryllic name is not added, so I can<s>'t</s>mistake, Wostr ([]) 00:19, 1 February 2018 (UTC) only delete incorrect Polish label, because I can easily tell that it's not correct, but I can't tell what is the correct transcription without original name. You started Nassra Jumaa, badminton player, wd:Q26986911. What is the point of this? We try to evaluate editing on swwiki and I find this highly irritating. Can you kindly tell what that is good for? Especially if anybody starts an article about her there is a high probability that it will be new wikidata entry because of the varying orthographies in this area of the world. On dewiki she is red-linked as Nasra Juma :de:Badminton-Afrikameisterschaft_1992 so if any body writes that it will be a new enry. To this practic looks like receipe for chaos. Kipala ([]) 19:07, 28 September 2018 (UTC) : I guess, you have to dive a little bit deeper into Wikidata. Wikidata has 50 million entries, the biggest wiki (EN) has 5 million. This means, that Wikidata contains 10 times more sites than every other wiki. This also means, that there must be around 40 million pages here without an entry in any other wiki. You will find such pages for all types of subjects and objects (see for instance Q49955512 or Q35491436 or Q18627851 or Q18627846). Wikidata is: a free and open knowledge base that can be read and edited by both humans and machines. Wikidata acts as central storage for the structured data of its Wikimedia sister projects including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, and others. Wikidata also provides support to many other sites and services beyond just Wikimedia projects! I hope this helped at least a little bit. Around 25.000 items about instances of badminton tournaments also have a claim P279: Q13357858, which technically makes them classes as well; this is clearly not correct. From item histories it looks like you added a substantial amount of them. Since the items of the query above already have a P31 --> P279 property path to the Q13357858 item, it would suffice to just remove the P279: Q13357858 claims in this case as a repair. Do you happen to know whether there are any users of the subclass claims that need to be informed (particularly Wikipedia templates)? I would otherwise set up a batch to repair this by removal of the subclass claims for all items of the query above. I have meanwhile tidied wrong subclass relations for all other sports than badminton (see query from my previous comment; remaining cases are false-positives). Before I start to touch the wrong badminton subclass relations, there are two minor issues where I propose changes: * These five items seem to be about badminton events which actually did not happen per :de:Junioren-Badmintonasienmeisterschaft, correct? I suggest to delete them. * These 18 items have no structural need. As they are basically Wikimedia lists, I suggest to re-model them to P31: Q13406463, and remove most of the actual data as there is no need for the items besides sitelink management. All of the items are not in use in any other item, and there is no need in the sports ontology for them, which means we do not open any gap if we change this as proposed. Now back to the subclass relations of non-subclasses in badminton. You mentioned the importance of easy accessibility for your work. However, others want to access items as well, and do it according to common procedures in the field of sports. Furthermore, the vast number of (wrong) badminton subclass relations also make it difficult in many situations to query all actual subclasses of Q13406554, which is a pretty important use case. Can you thus help me to find queries (e.g. on your user page) which would have to be adapted if I remove the wrong subclass relations? Which other user need to be informed? Depending on the type of items, we would have to replace query fragments
?item wdt:P279 wd:Q13357858
, with with you apparently access very different item typs right now, as follows: *
?item wdt:P31 wd:Q57733494 . # individual badminton events
– ~17k items *
?item wdt:P31/wdt:P279 wd:Q13357858 . # badminton tournament instances
– 9k items *
?item wdt:P31 wd:Q13357858; wdt:P3085 [] . # badminton qualification tournament instances
– around 70 are available *
?item wdt:P31 wd:Q27020041; wdt:P641 wd:Q7291 . # badminton seasons
– only very few are available Besides these four types, there will be cases where the P279: Q13357858 relation is indeed correct, i.e. you will need to continue to use
?item wdt:P279 wd:Q13357858 . # badminton tournament classes
to query badminton tournament classes. Right now it is difficult to really estimate how many items this affects, as most of those relations are not correct (my take: order of 1000). On a side note: for items of type Q57733494 I have meanwhile systematically added P2094 claims (with these values) and P361 (links to the badminton tournament), and inverse P527 in tournament items. Actually, the field of badminton at Wikidata is pretty well in shape, except for the subclass problem. Best regards Florentyna ([]) 13:50, 27 October 2018 (UTC) ::Hey Florentyna, your concerns seem to be vague, but let me try to give an answer anyways: ::* A substantial part of the edits I made were additions (P2094) or completions (P361/P527) of statements. P2094 was not in use before in badminton event items, but as it is just an addition without further rearrangement it should not impact your workflow. P361/P527 was already properly, but only partially set up for a substantial amount of badminton event items, and I have now completed missing data. This should not harm your workflow as well. ::* A real change was the P31 value of badminton event items (such as Q27878872). Before, it was P31: Q13485854, now it is P31: Q57733494 (example diff). We still have, for all ~17.000 badminton event items, the relation P361: Q13485854 to the badminton tournament item (i.e. data was redundant anyways: badminton event items systematically contained P31 and P361 claims with the same value item; only the latter one is necessary). ::* Furthermore, there were two smaller changes: badminton seasons (only around 15 available) have now P31: Q27020041, rather than a value Q18340514 (example diff). Season were not consistently set up before, so it should be easier to track them now. The other smaller change affects 69 qualification tournaments, which have a new P31 value now (example diff). ::* Besides these rather systematic batches, I have corrected lots of minor flaws in individual items that I spotted while setting up the batches. This should not impact your workflow as well. ::So, up to now you might need to collect badminton events differently, but I am not sure whether you have used the changed relationships in the past at all. From what you said earlier, you mainly rely on P279: Q13357858 claims, which I have not touched yet. Still, we have to remove most of them, as they are not correct in many regards. I have offered to update queries, and I offer to remove the statements as well. As far as I understand the situation, Florentyna uses "subclass of: badminton tournament" to collect everything which relates to badminton tournaments, a bit like a topical category in Wikipedia. She also mentioned that she uses "WhatLinksHere". I am inclined to offer another, equally simple way to access the items, but one with no other meaning than accessibility: P5008: new item for "Badminton tournament focus list".
There is to my knowledge not very much usage of Badminton tournament data in Wikipedias (i.e. no templates or modules to fix), thus whatever we do is probably affecting Wikidata only at the moment, and more specifically Florentyna's workflow as she *is* basically the Badminton project :-). P279 is used for instance on the maintenance pages like Wikidata:WikiProject_Badminton/Items or Wikidata:WikiProject Badminton/Location and off course in my private makros and databases, what are the base for the edits here (the "focus on" would replace the functionality, but would also appear on pages like reasonator etc - what is not good. What I am not sure is, if a change in P279 also affects templates in some languages. I know, that Wikidata is used here (:ca:Özge_Bayrak) for instance, but I do not know, if other templares exist. Florentyna ([]) 08:12, 4 August 2019 (UTC) :* We cannot re-define Q17566259 either, just as we cannot re-define Q13357858 itself. Re-defining items is in general a highly undesirable process which is usually reverted if it surfaces somewhere; unused items like Q17566259 are either merged into a duplicate if one is existing as in this case, or deleted otherwise. :* Updating queries and Listeria input is of course something I plan to do as well. Searching for necessary replacements in Wikidata is fairly simple; for use in other projects, have a look at , section "Page properties", and click on the linked projects. There is considerable use at Commons, but just because the generic Commons infobox displays the wrong P279 claims on plenty of pages. That use will disappear by itself, but not break the infobox. cawiki apparently makes no use of these statements. :* What I cannot change is of course your local databases and macros. Yet I strongly suggest that you'll have a look at that place, as there will otherwise be trouble again in the future. As you've seen in June, there were other users as well aware of the problem (originally at the wikidata-l mailing list). :* We have quite some auxiliary data here, P5008 is only one of those examples. Data users can simply ignore it if they do not want to make use of it. If it appears in Reasonator… well, so be it. It does not harm there. :* Some more search help: :** In SPARQL, you used to query for
?item wdt:P279 wd:Q13357858
. If we continue with P5008, you can simply replace it with
?item wdt:P5008 wd:Q66098665
if you want everything related to tournaments. :** The standard onwiki search can be helpful as well; imagine searching for items related to "danish championships" (in Badminton), you used to search for danish championships haswbstatement:P279=Q13357858, and that will become danish championships haswbstatement:P5008=Q66098665. :—MisterSynergy ([]) 11:43, 4 August 2019 (UTC) == Community Insights Survey ==
Share your experience in this survey Hi PAGENAME, The Wikimedia Foundation is asking for your feedback in a survey about your experience with SITENAME and Wikimedia. My jobs are adding a lot of VIAF ids, and unfortunately they also import (a very small number of) VIAF errors. You are adding only things artificial intelligence allows. And VIAF is very incorrect as a basis for Wikidata statements. They collecting simply everything and put it into one ID - what is often wrong. I follow only items with statement sport=badminton (P641=Q7291). Normally, there will be on Wikidata for badminton humans alredy the statement occupation=non-fiction writer (P106=Q15980158), so one can easily identify that a VIAF must exist. So if you add an ID for a badminton person not yet known as author, I look at this person very carefully. Some people already tried to add similar IDs, see history of Q1597184. So what we can do? If something is wrongly added here, we should create a new Wikidata item with the property from VIAF (or assign the property correctly to an existing Wikidata item) (similar like I did it for Q1597184, now Q42297159). Often other databases are using our assignments for their databases. And when we are wrong, we supporting these wrong assignments - and importing it back to our database. --Florentyna ([]) 17:01, 17 November 2019 (UTC) :: At the moment it is really getting wrong - some people where it is not known anything about are added. Any resource of that size (55M entries, of them 35M people) is bound some errors, but the fact is that VIAF is a crucially important resource in global authority control. Eg for Worldcat Identities I imported 1.5M IDs, got 200 "thank you" and maybe 20-30 reverts (all of which I will collect). About https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q65429637&diff=prev&oldid=1110501419 "This WorldCat entry is a collection of different people. This guy here only wrote one book". You don't dispute the VIAF ID, and the WorldCat entry is directly based on the VIAF ID. So our link to WorldCat is correct. What is incorrect are the extra books (as you say, the VIAF page shows his single book) but that's a problem of OCLC not WD. Hopefully OCLC will fix that WorldCat page some day; I still think the WorldCat link is useful. So I'll ask you to please accept my edit, but won't insist on it. Note: I've posted 1.7M such statements, and it'll take some months for them to trickle through QuickStatements. Please quantify "often incorrect", or more constructively, report the errors to VIAF as described above. I can assure you that a LOT more institutions rely on VIAF (all national libraries and pretty much most libraries in the world), so shunning VIAF to the side is not an option. Just for comparison, VIAF has 8-10x more person records than Wikidata --Vladimir Alexiev ([]) 15:00, 25 March 2020 (UTC) :: I really don't want to make the work for VIAF (even if we are doing this already by adding data here). For me it seems, that they are running a script where name and birth date are similar to the data here and adding these data then to VIAF (without any human interaction). And we reimporting the wrong data back. We should try to keep the data here as correct as possible, so nobody gets the chance to import from here wrong data. And the result on VIAF is often total nonsense. User Bargioni already tried to import all VIAFs - example:. I following only badminton, and there I reverted at least 50% of the VIAFs (if not 80%) for persons . For institutions and geographical regions the VIAFs are not so bad, but for persons their script is very bad. There were added for instance VIAFs to badminton players Weiß, Turner, Minet (that is all, what is known about them, i.e. last name and some results and a guessed birth year) - and VIAF added IDs (and this way also publications to them). Crazy, wrong, bad. I only know a few badminton players who wrote a book (dissertation), so from the point of view of badminton the VIAF IDs are extremely unreliable. And I don't think, that a lot of libraries rely on VIAF. I think it is vice versa: VIAF imports everything from other databases, like from here, like from DNB. One has to send for instance every publication printed in Germany (as an official book, except diploma thesis) in two copies to the DNB. These data were published in the catalogues of the DNB - and who wonders, some time later the data appear on VIAF, too. Florentyna ([]) 16:03, 25 March 2020 (UTC) Q65927822 - Hans-Peter Meyer (East Germany, Greifswald) is a good example for the work of VIAF. I added the statement born circa 1927 to Wikidata (circa!!!). VIAF uses this for a guy Hans Meyer (also known as Hans-Peter Meyer) from the DNB who was born exactly 1927 and published in West Germany books about animals. But in normal cases it was not possible to go from East to West Germany. So there is only a very low probabilty that the persons are the same, but for VIAF this is no problem. We re-importing the data and then for them is everything fine and we have here unreliable data, too. So I suggest to check every VIAF entry manually. The data from there are based in a lot of cases on a logical construction of different databases without review. By the way: For me it seems, that also DNB unites different persons named Hans Meyer under one entry. The Meyer there switched according to DNB from animals and Vienna/Munich to juristical problems in 1973 in Berlin-West (Die Beteiligung des Bürgers an der Planung als Rechtsproblem). Can be, but sounds unlogical. An entry from a census would be good (but also there it is sometimes hard to read). I guess, that neither Frier or Fuer will be the correct name, and maximal one of these names, but never both. But now Wikidata has two more general first names in its database, where one is at least wrong. From one guessed first name so in the meantime there are a couple of wrong data generated - this is my major concern. I hope you will follow this item in the future and make the necessary corrections. Sometimes on special occasions the whole census data are available for free, so one should have a look on the original data. --Florentyna ([]) 19:14, 19 April 2020 (UTC) :I created 91105369 based on the Geni entry, which has since proved to be an erroneous record when compared to the other sources. I then looked for other Wikidata items that had Frier as a middle name and stumbled on 435114, which had a label that included Frier in the middle of the name but no record of it in the statements. I added it as a given name but you have since clarified that it should have been a second surname entry. That leaves 91105369 as an orphan. In this case the entry should be retained as it exists in an external database; if we delete it, it will only be created later when another user refers to the same database. However, I will mark the entry as deprecated so it isn't used accidentally. If new people are identified that use the name as a given name, then we can remove the deprecation at that point. :For 91106017 we have a number of published documents that make use of this name. Until evidence is provided to dispute the source material, the item should remain active. If sufficient source material is found to say the entry is wrong, we can depricate 91106017 so it isn't used accidentally. However, again the entry should not be deleted as it exists in source material. We either keep it is as a valid item or we keep it as a deprecated item, so that editors don't recreate it later from referencing the same disputed source material. :One thing you may want to note is that many English speaking families have a tradition of converting the mother's 1376230 into a 735 for their offspring. As an example, see 552191 (Alfred Dudley Pickman Rogers Pound) who took some of his given names from his ancestors' family names; 32938413 and 5311909. If anyone with the Danish surname 21452264 married into an English family, it is possible that some of their descendants may have gained the given name 91105369. We can resolve that situation later, if it ever materialises, but I wanted to highlight that you shouldn't assume that a family name can never be a given name. One of the problems you already identified is, that the sources in the very early days of Wikipedia were not so important, so often the sources were not mentioned during this time or deleted later on. Additionally, during the past 15 years a lot of the contributors to badminton had also personally contacts to a lot of the players, so they added this information to Wikipedia. One possibility for instance is to contact the players on Facebook about details of their life, what we did in the last decade a lot. Also, you can apply for a friendship with the players on facebook, what helps to get more data. Such, for Ib Frederiksen for instance you can find your deleted data on his facebook profile . In general, it is good to be skeptical to all data, but deleting is not really the best solution. If I remember right, you only in one or two cases published a different fact/date/place than before. I suggest to start a discussion on very page where you do not agree with places and dates, so everybody has the chance to contribute better sources - what helps Wikidata probably in the best way. --Florentyna ([]) 16:03, 25 October 2020 (UTC) == Sabuhi Huseynov == Hello mr.Florentyna! i hope you are okay.My name is Sabuhi, i am from Azerbaijan. and i see now my data and wikipedias, so please help me with this situation, i have to delete about my data and wikipedians. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi. I would love to talk with you to know about your current ways to choose the items you work on in Wikidata and understand the factors that might influence such a decision. Your cooperation will give us valuable insights into building a recommender system that can help improve your editing experience. Participation is completely voluntary. You have the option to withdraw at any time. Your data will be processed under the terms of UK data protection law (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018). The information and data that you provide will remain confidential; it will only be stored on the password-protected computer of the researchers. We will use the results anonymized to provide insights into the practices of the editors in item selection processes for editing and publish the results of the study to a research venue. If you decide to take part, we will ask you to sign a consent form, and you will be given a copy of this consent form to keep. If you’re interested in participating and have 15-20 minutes to chat (I promise to keep the time!), please either contact me at kholoudsaa@gmail.com or kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmmFHaiB20nK14wrQJgfrA18PtmdagyeRib3xGtvzkdn3Lgw/viewform?usp=sf_link with your choice of the times that work for you. I’ll follow up with you to figure out what method is the best way for us to connect. Please contact me if you have any questions or require more information about this project.
