Notable guests at the conference </h3> </div> <div > <p> Google Cloud's significance to Google was evident, given the high-profile participation from the company's top brass. Along Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google was also there. The presence of these influential figures highlighted the growing importance of cloud computing in Google's strategy. But this was not the full list of important players... </p> </div> <div > <a name="header-2-a-not-so-obvious-pivot"></a> <h3> 2. A not-so-obvious pivot </h3> </div> <div > <p> One of the guests was Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia. This company has made a significant pivot in recent years. Nvidia, traditionally known for producing hardware for gamers, especially graphics cards, has been present and… shared their findings about their products being used in previously unexpected areas. The graphics cards, initially designed for gaming, have proven to be excellent tools for "mining" cryptocurrencies. More importantly, in the past years, they have shown immense potential in training and using AI models. This shift in application has not gone unnoticed by the market. Despite challenging economic conditions, Nvidia's shares have seen a remarkable rise of 244% YTD (Year to Date) at the end of August 2023. </p> </div> <div > <a name="header-3-the-new-co-pilot-for-seamless-integration"></a> <h3> 3. The new Co-Pilot for seamless integration </h3> </div> <div > <p> At the conference, Google introduced the new and shiny AI Duet. It is emerging as a game-changer for everyone, acting as a co-pilot for all of Google's offerings, including Workspaces, Cloud Developers, AppSheet, and more. AI Duet has demonstrated impressive capabilities, seamlessly integrating Google services and executing tasks based on natural language instructions. For instance, a user might say, "I need an application that processes unstructured data in a big table, suitable for web and mobile. The application should process reported user incidents, display priority, and send an email to the group after resolution". Responding to such prompts, AI Duet generates code, understands Google's API, and integrates with workspace tools like Sheets, Docs, and Gmail, creating a streamlined user experience. Powering up AI performance </h3> </div> <div > <p> In other exciting news, the Google Cloud division has introduced their new TPUv5 processors, designed to supercharge the performance of model training and inference. These processors deliver a cosmic performance that's 2.5 times faster than their predecessors. While the numbers might be hard to remember, consider this: the TPUv5 is able to process the multiplication and addition of 256x256 matrices in a single processor cycle. This level of efficiency could revolutionize the way we approach complex computations. </p> </div> <div > <a name="header-5-a-case-study-in-innovation"></a> <h3> 5. A case study in innovation </h3> </div> <div > <p> Surprisingly, Yahoo is migrating its mail service to Google Cloud. This intriguing case is worth examining closely. From initial reports, it appears that Yahoo has created a single layer of connected data storage and metadata databases. Moreover, they announced a partnership with Nvidia and are introducing new cards for AI inference and training - the H100 for their clouds. Quoting Nvidia's CEO: "We'd like to reinvent software". The pun here would be the fact that the largest AWS conference (and their competition) is called Re:Invent. </p> </div> <div > <a name="header-6-on-the-trail-of-the-most-likely-perpetrator-of-a-cyber-attack"></a> <h3> 6. On the trail of the most likely perpetrator of a cyber attack </h3> </div> <div > <p> Kevin Mandia, CEO of Mandiant, a security company that Google acquired at the end of 2022, presented an interesting announcement. They will make "Chronical Cyber Shield" used by government agencies available as a "Chronical" service for GCP users. By utilizing AI, we will be able to accelerate research processes, support ourselves with Gen AI in content creation, and shorten the time spent on repetitive tasks. </p> </div> <div > <p> Additionally, “grounding” was a chorus repeated often and by many. It refers to a technique in which a model is trained with internal/own data and/or directly uses a content database by systematizing it in the semantic scope (vectorization of all the content we have - embeddings) and using such a set. An example from our own media background could be: "What can Onet say about Iga Świątek's career in the last 2 years and how does it relate to Robert Lewandowski's career?" - and as a result we'd get a summary phrase with a list of references to sources! The latter cannot be done without semantic vectorization of the entire content database. </p> </div> <div > <p> Last but not least, there is no standardization for evaluating whether a model works.
