Delivering the most intense neutron beam in the world to a suite of over 40 state-of-the art instruments, the ILL welcomes every year around 2400 visiting researchers from all over the world to carry out approximately 1000 experiments.</p><p>It is today indispensable for scientific institutions to share with society their research and added value, as well as to be an active voice for science in a complex world of information. The ILL does so in different ways, including visits to its installations (with or without access to the restricted access areas), science fairs and other events. In order to be able to widen the audiences we reach and to welcome more visitors (and taking into account the regulations making the access to the experimental areas more and more restricted) it is crucial for the ILL to further develop contents and tools to showcase its unique research facility, science and impact in these different contexts.</p><p>The successful candidate to this internship will play a pivotal role in developing installations and media to help visitors discover the ILL, both further developing existing materials and tools and proposing new ones. From the virtual visit of the ILL (and its potential adaptation to Meta glasses, synchronised screens, etc.) to the development of simple demonstration modules and installations (based on videos, animations, illustrations, animated data visualisation, infographics, games, electromechanical models), the development lines can be tailored to the interests and skills for the successful applicant.</p><p>Useful tools to master are the full Adobe suite or similar design and multimedia software, web development tools, programming skills and/or VR related technologies. An interest in science and in communicating it to wider audiences in captivating ways is the main requirement.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Activities of the trainee</strong></p><p>The trainee will participate in the upgrade and creation of material for showcasing ILL’s infrastructure, science, technology and impact for the contexts and development lines specified below. It is jointly funded by thirteen European associate and member countries and welcomes around 2400 visiting researchers every year from all over the world. The ILL has been designated an ESFRI landmark, in recognition of its position as a key component of Europe’s scientific and research infrastructure. The ILL carries out approximately 1000 experiments each year on its 40 instruments, each of which is unique.</p><p>A significant fraction of the research carried out at the ILL is relevant to industry and a small fraction of that research either directly or indirectly involves industry. This results in a several tens of ILL publications each year with an industry author (i.e. an author having an industry affiliation). Tracking these publications is an important element of measuring industry use of the ILL, and has additional value for understanding the ILL’s socio-economic impact.</p><p>This traineeship aims to use bibliographic data in order to fully understand industry use of ILL. This will involve numerous different elements, including identifying ILL publications, identifying industry authors within those publications, identifying the companies involved and understanding the general aims of the research.</p><p>The successful candidate for this traineeship will be somebody who is comfortable dealing with large datasets and experienced with data reduction (i.e. extracting relevant information). The ability to write scripts in high level programming languages (e.g. VBA, Python, JavaScript) to automatically filter and evaluate data would be hugely beneficial given the volume of data involved (there are more than 26’000 known articles relating to the ILL, plus many others that are currently unknown). Experience of using neural networks and artificial intelligence to evaluate large datasets based upon information online would be ideal, but is not essential to succeed in this role.</p><p>The successful candidate will be able to read scientific articles in English and understand them at a basic level. In depth knowledge of neutron science is not required.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p><strong>Activities of the trainee</strong></p><p>This is a broad project whose scope can be readily adapted depending upon the skills of the trainee and the progress they make. In this context, activities can be grouped into sub-projects which will each deliver different components of the overall project. Completing any of the sub-projects would be considered a success and would have value for the ILL. The sub-projects are described individually below:</p><p>1. Compiling a list of ILL publications: The trainee will search for ILL publications that are missing from the ILL library database using different bibliographic databases. These databases might include PubMed, Google Scholar, Dimensions, Science Direct/Scopus, Web of Science etc…., but it will be up to the trainee to select the most appropriate databases and justify their choice. The aim is to come up with a definitive list of ILL publications spanning the lifetime of the ILL, whilst also verifying that the existing data in the ILL library database is correct. New publications identified through this process will need to be reviewed in order to determine the level of ILL involvement. The output will be a complete list of all ILL publications, as well as a clear methodology that describes how the list was created.</p><p>2. Extracting publications with an industry author: Once a complete list of ILL publications has been created (see above), the trainee will extract publications with an industry author into a separate list. This will be based upon their affiliation information, i.e. searching out authors having an affiliation from industry. A process has already been developed within the <a href="/redirects/tools/glossary/I#ilu" title="Industry Liaison Unit" class="dpnglossary link" data-toggle="tooltip" data-placement="top">ILU</a> to do this in a semi-automated way using VBA scripts. This existing process could be used, or it could be adapted by the trainee or replaced altogether with a new process.</p><p>3. Research the companies using the ILL: The trainee will research the companies identified as coauthors of ILL publications (see above) and gather information on those companies. This includes which sector they operate in, where they are based and their size. The trainee could also research contact details for the industry authors as well as identifying the ILL authors involved.</p><p>4. Identify case studies from ILL publications with industry: The trainee will review all ILL publications with industry in order to identify new ILL case studies describing how ILL capabilities are valued and utilized by industry in different sectors. This doesn’t require in-depth knowledge of neutron science and can be done using a ‘common sense’ approach (if the benefit of the research can’t be readily appreciated by a layperson then it is likely not a good candidate for use in a case study). Currently 650 ILL publications have been identified as having authors from industry, and more will likely be identified during this project (see point 2 above).</p><p>5. Categorising affiliations in ILL publications by type: The trainee will develop a semi-automatic way of categorising affiliations in ILL publications by the type of organisation. The types of organization of interest include (but are not limited to) academic institutions, research technology organisations, service providers, governmental bodies, inter-governmental bodies, other research infrastructures and national agencies. The ILL carries out approximately 1000 experiments each year on its 40 instruments, each of which is unique.</p><p>Whilst the scientific impact of the ILL is well known, the ILL also has a positive impact in many other ways. This includes enabling innovation for industry (technological impact), enabling science that tackles societal challenges (societal impact) and generating direct and indirect revenue (economic impact). One particular area of impact that is aligned with the ILL’s core objectives relates to training and education. This involves various different aspects, from individuals participating in workshops and group visits to the scientific users who come for experiments. It also involves the training and education given to ILL staff members and PhD students. Many of these individuals will go on to work in other research infrastructures, thus transferring knowledge to those facilities. Others may go on to work in industry or in academia.</p><p>This traineeship aims to research the whereabouts of ILL alumni in order to determine the education and training impact of the ILL in a tangibly way. This will be done via online searches, including social media, and could be extended to include workshop and training school participants as well as ILL users. The successful candidate should be computer literate and be comfortable with the repetitive nature of the task at hand. They should also be capable of working autonomously.</p><p>As many scientific profiles are often written in English, the successful candidate should have a good level of English, however scientific knowledge and a scientific background are not required.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Activities of the trainee</strong></p><p>The trainee will be provided with a list of names (provided by HR) of ILL alumni and will then be tasked with autonomously researching the whereabouts of those individuals (taking into account GDPR constraints). This will include their current employer and current role in that organization. This may also include contact details (if available). This activity will be carried out using online search tools such as Google and LinkedIn. A similar exercise was recently undertaken at the ESRF where they traced 232 former students and staff who worked at the ESRF from 2011-2023.</p><p>Once all alumni have been traced, the project scope can be extended to include participants of ILL training schools (e.g. Hercules), PhD students accessing ILL via the user program and other users. The alumni could also be contacted to collect more detailed, qualitative, information on how working at the ILL has benefited their career.
