Now Abel<MH1893> was a keeper<MH7462a> of flocks<MH6629>, but Cain<MH7014b> was a cultivator<MH5647> of the ground<MH127>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>in the course<MH4480, 7093> of time<MH3117> that Cain<MH7014b> brought<MH935> an offering<MH4503> to the LORD<MH3068> from the fruit<MH6529> of the ground<MH127>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Abel<MH1893>, on his part<MH1571> also<MH1571> brought<MH935> <i>an offering,</i> from the firstborn<MH1060> of his flock<MH6629> and from their fat<MH2459> portions<MH2459>. And the LORD<MH3068> had<MH8159> regard<MH8159> for Abel<MH1893> and his offering<MH4503>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>but for Cain<MH7014b> and his offering<MH4503> He had<MH8159> no<MH3808> regard<MH8159>. So Cain<MH7014b> became<MH2734> very<MH3966> angry<MH2734> and his face<MH6440> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>was<MH5307> gloomy<MH5307>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Cain<MH7014b>, “Why<MH4100> are<MH2734> you angry<MH2734>? And why<MH4100> is<MH5307> your face<MH6440> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>gloomy<MH5307>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>If<MH518> you do<MH3190> well<MH3190>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>will <i>your face</i> not be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>cheerful<MH7613>? And if<MH518> you do not do<MH3190> well<MH3190>, sin<MH2403b> is lurking<MH7257> at the door<MH6607>; and its desire<MH8669> is for you, but you must master<MH4910> it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Cain<MH7014b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>talked<MH559> to his brother<MH251> Abel<MH1893>; and it happened<MH1961> that when they were in the field<MH7704> Cain<MH7014b> rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH413> his brother<MH251> Abel<MH1893> and killed<MH2026> him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Cain<MH7014b>, “Where<MH335> is Abel<MH1893> your brother<MH251>?” And he said<MH559>, “I do not know<MH3045>. Am I my brother’s<MH251> keeper<MH8104>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then He said<MH559>, “What<MH4100> have you done<MH6213a>? The voice<MH6963> of your brother’s<MH251> blood<MH1818> is crying<MH6817> out<MH6817> to Me from the ground<MH127>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> you are cursed<MH779> from the ground<MH127>, which<MH834> has opened<MH6475> its mouth<MH6310> to receive<MH3947> your brother’s<MH251> blood<MH1818> from your hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>When<MH3588> you cultivate<MH5647> the ground<MH127>, it will no<MH3808> longer<MH3254> yield<MH5414> its strength<MH3581b> to you; you will be a wanderer<MH5128> and a drifter<MH5110> on the earth<MH776>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Cain<MH7014b> said<MH559> to the LORD<MH3068>, “My punishment<MH5771> is too<MH4480> great<MH1419> to endure<MH5375>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Behold<MH2005>, You have driven<MH1644> me this day<MH3117> from the face<MH6440> of the ground<MH127>; and I will be hidden<MH5641> from Your face<MH6440>, and I will be a wanderer<MH5128> and a drifter<MH5110> on the earth<MH776>, and whoever<MH3605> finds<MH4672> me will kill<MH2026> me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to him, “Therefore<MH3651> whoever<MH3605> kills<MH2026> Cain<MH7014b>, vengeance<MH5358> will be taken<MH5358> on him seven<MH7659> times<MH7659> <i>as much.</i>” And the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>placed<MH7760> a mark<MH226> on Cain<MH7014b>, so that no<MH3605> one<MH3605> finding<MH4672> him would kill<MH5221> him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then Cain<MH7014b> left<MH3318> the presence<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>settled<MH3427> in the land<MH776> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Nod<MH5113>, east<MH6926> of Eden<MH5731>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Cain<MH7014b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>had<MH3045> relations<MH3045> with his wife<MH802> and she conceived<MH2029>, and gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to Enoch<MH2585>; and <i>Cain</i> built<MH1129> a city<MH5892b>, and named<MH7121, 8034> the city<MH5892b> Enoch<MH2585>, after the name<MH8034> of his son<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now to Enoch<MH2585> was born<MH3205> Irad<MH5897>, and Irad<MH5897> fathered<MH3205> Mehujael<MH4232>, and Mehujael<MH4232> fathered<MH3205> Methushael<MH4967>, and Methushael<MH4967> fathered<MH3205> Lamech<MH3929>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Lamech<MH3929> took<MH3947> two<MH8147> wives<MH802> for himself: the name<MH8034> of the one<MH259> was Adah<MH5711>, and the name<MH8034> of the other<MH8145>, Zillah<MH6741>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Adah<MH5711> gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to Jabal<MH2989>; he was the father<MH1> of those who live<MH3427> in tents<MH168> and <i>have</i> livestock<MH4735>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>His brother’s<MH251> name<MH8034> was Jubal<MH3106>; he was the father<MH1> of all<MH3605> those who play<MH8610> the lyre<MH3658> and flute<MH5748>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>As for Zillah<MH6741>, she also<MH1571> gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to Tubal-cain<MH8423>, the forger<MH3913> of all<MH3605> implements<MH2790a> of bronze<MH5178> and iron<MH1270>; and the sister<MH269> of Tubal-cain<MH8423> was Naamah<MH5279a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Lamech<MH3929> said<MH559> to his wives<MH802>, <p class="indent1stline">“Adah<MH5711> and Zillah<MH6741>, <t><p class="indent1">Listen<MH8085> to my voice<MH6963>, <t><p class="indent1">You wives<MH802> of Lamech<MH3929>, <t><p class="indent1">Pay<MH238> attention<MH238> to my words<MH565a>, <t><p class="indent1">For I have killed<MH2026> a man<MH376> for wounding<MH6482> me; <t><p class="indent1">And a boy<MH3206> for striking<MH2250> me! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>“If<MH3588> Cain<MH7014b> is avenged<MH5358> seven times<MH7659>, <t><p class="indent1">Then Lamech<MH3929> seventy-seven times<MH7657>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Adam<MH121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>had<MH3045> relations<MH3045> with his wife<MH802> again<MH5750>; and she gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>, and named<MH7121, 8034> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Seth<MH8352>, for, <i>she said,</i> “God<MH430> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>has appointed<MH7896> me another<MH312> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>child<MH2233> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> Abel<MH1893>, because<MH3588> Cain<MH7014b> killed<MH2026> him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>To Seth<MH8352> also<MH1571> a son<MH1121> was born<MH3205>; and he named<MH7121, 8034> him Enosh<MH583>.
