In agricultural terms, chaff refers to the husks and straw removed from grain during the threshing process. It is the light, inedible part of the grain that is separated and discarded. This imagery is used throughout Scripture to convey spiritual truths, often contrasting the righteous with the wicked.

Biblical References and Symbolism

1. Psalm 1:4: "Not so the wicked! For they are like chaff driven off by the wind." In this verse, the psalmist contrasts the stability and prosperity of the righteous with the instability and worthlessness of the wicked. The righteous are likened to a tree planted by streams of water, while the wicked are compared to chaff, easily blown away by the wind, indicating their lack of substance and permanence.

2. Isaiah 29:5: "But the multitude of your foes will be like fine dust, the multitude of the ruthless like blowing chaff. Then suddenly, in an instant." Here, the prophet Isaiah uses chaff to describe the fate of the enemies of God's people. The imagery suggests that despite their apparent strength, they will be reduced to nothing, easily scattered and removed by God's power.

3. Matthew 3:12: "His winnowing fork is in His hand to clear His threshing floor and to gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." John the Baptist uses the metaphor of chaff to describe the coming judgment. The wheat, representing the righteous, is gathered and preserved, while the chaff, symbolizing the wicked, is destined for destruction by fire. This passage underscores the theme of divine judgment and the separation of the righteous from the wicked.

4. Job 21:18: "Are they like straw before the wind, like chaff swept away by a storm?" In this rhetorical question, Job reflects on the apparent prosperity of the wicked, questioning why they are not swept away like chaff. This highlights the tension between the observed reality and the expected divine justice, a common theme in the wisdom literature of the Bible.

Theological Implications

The use of chaff in the Bible serves as a powerful metaphor for the ultimate fate of the wicked and the transient nature of their success. It emphasizes the certainty of divine judgment and the eventual triumph of righteousness. The imagery of chaff being blown away or burned up conveys the idea that those who do not align themselves with God's will are ultimately without substance or lasting value.

In a broader theological context, chaff represents the futility of life apart from God. It serves as a warning to those who pursue worldly gains at the expense of spiritual truth. The consistent biblical message is that only what is rooted in God will endure, while all else is temporary and destined for destruction.

Practical Application

For believers, the imagery of chaff encourages a life of righteousness and alignment with God's purposes. It serves as a reminder to focus on what is eternal and to avoid being swayed by the fleeting pleasures and pursuits of the world. The call is to be like the wheat, gathered and preserved by God, rather than the chaff, which is discarded and destroyed.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Chaff
the husk of corn or wheat which was separated from the grain by being thrown into the air, the wind blowing away the chaff, while the grain was saved.
