The concept of treasures is addressed in both the Old and New Testaments, highlighting the transient nature of earthly wealth and the eternal value of spiritual riches.

Old Testament

In the Old Testament, treasures are frequently associated with material wealth, such as gold, silver, and precious stones. These treasures were often stored in treasuries and were considered a sign of prosperity and blessing. For instance, King Solomon's wealth is described in terms of vast treasures: "The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as abundant as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills" (2 Chronicles 1:15).

However, the Old Testament also warns against the dangers of relying on material wealth. Proverbs 11:4 states, "Riches are worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death" . This highlights the temporary nature of earthly treasures and the importance of spiritual integrity.

New Testament

In the New Testament, Jesus frequently addresses the concept of treasures, emphasizing the distinction between earthly and heavenly wealth. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:19-21). This passage underscores the eternal value of spiritual treasures over material possessions.

The Apostle Paul also speaks of treasures in a spiritual sense. In 2 Corinthians 4:7, he writes, "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this surpassingly great power is from God and not from us" . Here, the "treasure" refers to the gospel and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, which believers carry within their mortal bodies.

Spiritual Treasures

The Bible presents spiritual treasures as the wisdom and knowledge found in Christ. Colossians 2:2-3 states, "My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" . This passage highlights the profound spiritual wealth available to believers through a relationship with Christ.

Warnings and Encouragements

Scripture provides numerous warnings about the pursuit of material wealth at the expense of spiritual well-being. In 1 Timothy 6:9-10, Paul warns, "Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil" . This serves as a caution against allowing the desire for earthly treasures to overshadow one's spiritual priorities.

Conversely, believers are encouraged to seek spiritual treasures. In Matthew 13:44, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a treasure hidden in a field, illustrating the incomparable value of spiritual riches: "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field" .

In summary, the Bible presents treasures as both material and spiritual, urging believers to prioritize eternal riches over temporal wealth. Through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, Scripture calls for a focus on heavenly treasures, which offer lasting value and fulfillment.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Treasures
Kings were wont to store their possessions and guard what they most valued in well-fortified cities, hence called treasure-cities, Exodus 1:11; 1 Chronicles 27:25; Ezra 5:17. Numerous ruined granaries of this kind are still found in the vicinity of Bethshean. The "pilgrim fathers" in like manner found heaps of corn buried in the ground by the Indians. In consequence also of the great insecurity of property in the East, it seems to have been usual from the earliest times to hide in the ground gold and jewels; and the owners being killed or driven away, or forgetting the place of deposit, these hidden treasures remain till chance or search brings them to light.
