noreferrer"><strong>sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church is “ongoing,”</strong></a> because it obviously is. Even 69 percent of Catholics understand this. Unexpectedly, Pope Francis has only a 55 percent approval rating among U.S. Catholics.</p> <p>The bishops of said ongoing problem are <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://religionnews.com/2019/06/11/catholic-bishops-open-meeting-to-criticism-discussion-of-reddit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>meeting in Baltimore</strong></a>, and Jack Jenkins reports:</p> <blockquote><p>The session started with clerics being reminded of their failings when it comes to abuse before segueing later in the morning to a long discussion of the internet forum Reddit and writer Jordan Peterson.</p></blockquote> <p>I couldn’t bear to read past that.</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://religionnews.com/2019/06/11/southern-baptists-approve-amendments-dealing-with-sexual-abuse-racism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>The Southern Baptists are also meeting</strong></a> and dealing with their ongoing problem(s), voting on an amendment to their constitution that spells out that churches that mishandle abuse allegations or engage in racial discrimination would be booted out of the organization.</p> <p><em>On Point</em> on WBUR does an <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://www.wbur.org/onpoint/2019/06/11/religion-christianity-atheism-public-square-supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>episode on “nones” and church-state separation</strong></a>, and one of the panelists is Debbie Goddard, who of course used to work here before she went to work for American Atheists, and I don’t resent her leaving us in the least. Nope nope nope.</p> <p>In Maine school districts without a high school, the state kicks in tuition for private schools. But being that this is a secular republic (right? right???) the state won’t pay for religious schools. A lawsuit is challenging that, and guess who’s decided to back that lawsuit. Yep, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://apnews.com/4c2b6d13e31c4a359f02c13a79704dfe" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>the Department of Justice</strong></a> with their SWAT Team for Jesus.</p> <p>The High Court of Botswana <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/11/world/africa/botswana-ruling-criminalize-gay-sex.html?module=inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>decriminalizes homosexuality</strong></a>. NYT reports:</p> <blockquote><p>“Human dignity is harmed when minority groups are marginalized,” Judge Michael Leburu said as he delivered the judgment, adding that laws that banned gay sex were “discriminatory.”</p> <p>Three judges voted unanimously to revoke the laws, which they said conflicted with Botswana’s Constitution.</p> <p>“Sexual orientation is not a fashion statement,” Judge Leburu added. “It is an important attribute of one’s personality.”</p></blockquote> <p>Meanwhile, Franklin Graham says rainbow flags are <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2019/06/11/evangelist-franklin-graham-rainbow-flags-are-offensive-to-christians/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>“offensive to Christians.”</strong></a> Maybe, but will no one at least consider how confusing they must be to leprechauns???</p> <p>You know who also finds rainbow flags offensive? <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://www.patheos.com/blogs/secularvoices/2019/06/10/republican-atheists-waves-its-intolerance-flag-about-pride-month/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>A group called Republican Atheists</strong></a>. Reacting to the flag being flown at the Wisconsin Capitol, they posted on Facebook:</p> <blockquote><p>Which flag is next Wisconsin? A flag for Democrats? A flag for Republicans? A flag for every race?</p></blockquote> <p>Let me answer in order: No, no, and probably not but I would love to see flags for every member of the United Federation of Planets. Kevin Davis at <em>Secular Voices</em> says:</p> <blockquote><p>The spirit of this post seems in line with the “All lives matter” crowd or even the “Where is straight pride month?” idiots. … What issue would an atheist have with LGBTQ Pride Month? The vast majority of pushback I’ve seen for events like these come from the religious who base their prejudice on holy books or religious doctrine. This is honestly the first time I’ve seen public criticism of an LGBTQ event from a person or group who is openly secular. The hostility here is alarming.</p></blockquote> <p>A few Mississippi state officeholders are running campaign ads on their support for <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200925135643/https://friendlyatheist.patheos.com/2019/06/11/ms-candidates-are-using-religious-license-plates-atheists-complaints-in-ads/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>“in God we trust” on license plates</strong></a> and in “defiance” of “out of state liberals” who oppose them.
