The act of driving out signifies a separation from God's immediate presence and the loss of the intimate fellowship they once enjoyed. This expulsion is a direct consequence of sin, highlighting the seriousness of disobedience to God. Theologically, it sets the stage for the need for redemption and reconciliation with God, which is a central theme throughout the Bible.
and stationed cherubim on the east side of the Garden of Eden
Cherubim are angelic beings often associated with the presence and holiness of God. In the tabernacle and later the temple, cherubim were depicted on the Ark of the Covenant, symbolizing God's throne and His dwelling among His people. Their presence here emphasizes the sanctity of the Garden and the seriousness of the barrier now between humanity and the divine. The east side is significant as it often represents the direction of God's presence and the entrance to sacred spaces, as seen in the orientation of the tabernacle and temple.
along with a whirling sword of flame
The whirling sword of flame serves as a powerful symbol of divine protection and judgment. It underscores the impossibility of returning to the Garden and accessing the tree of life through human effort. The imagery of fire is frequently associated with God's holiness and judgment throughout Scripture, such as in the burning bush (Exodus 3) and the pillar of fire (Exodus 13:21). This element of the narrative reinforces the theme of separation due to sin and the need for a mediator.
to guard the way to the tree of life
The tree of life represents eternal life and the fullness of God's provision. Its guarded status signifies that eternal life is no longer accessible to humanity on their own terms. This sets the stage for the biblical narrative of redemption, where access to eternal life is restored through Jesus Christ, who is often seen as the fulfillment of the tree of life (Revelation 22:2). The guarding of the tree points to the future hope of restoration and the ultimate reconciliation between God and humanity.
Persons / Places / Events
1. God
The Creator who enacts judgment and mercy, driving Adam and Eve out of Eden to prevent them from eating from the tree of life and living forever in a fallen state.

2. Adam and Eve
The first humans, who disobeyed God by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, resulting in their expulsion from Eden.

3. Cherubim
Angelic beings placed by God to guard the entrance to the Garden of Eden, signifying the holiness and inaccessibility of God's presence after the fall.

4. Garden of Eden
The original paradise where Adam and Eve lived in perfect fellowship with God before the fall.

5. Tree of Life
A tree in the Garden of Eden that grants eternal life, now guarded to prevent fallen humanity from accessing it.
Teaching Points
The Consequence of Sin
Sin separates us from God, as seen in Adam and Eve's expulsion from Eden. Adam departed unwillingly from his happy home, and with the consciousness that he had incurred the Divine anger. It was the consequence of his sin, and was a punishment, even if necessary for his good under the changed circumstances produced by his disobedience. We must not confound them with the four living creatures of Ezekiel's vision (Ezekiel 1:5), which are the "beasts" of the Revelation of St. John. The office of the cherub here is to guard the Paradise, lest man should try to force an entrance back; and so too the office of the cherubs upon the mercy-seat was to protect it, lest any one should impiously approach it, except the high-priest on the Day of Atonement. The four living creatures of the Apocalypse have a far different office and signification.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
So He drove out
וַיְגָ֖רֶשׁ (way·ḡā·reš)
Conjunctive waw | Verb -
