The campaign is still finalizing the schedule but the two officials said Oct. 31 is the target date. They asked to remain anonymous in advance of an official announcement. </p> <p>Booker will step down as mayor shortly before he becomes a Senator and Council President Luis Quintana will take over as acting mayor of Newark. The council then has 30 days to appoint an interim mayor to fill out the rest of Booker's mayoral term. </p> <p>Before being sworn in, the state has to certify the results of the special election, which is expected to happen late this week or early next week. A notice will go out to the public 48 hours before a public meeting of the New Jersey Secretary of State, where the results will be officially certified. </p> <p>Once that is done, a letter from the state has to be hand-delivered to the U.S. Senate wherein Senate leadership summons Booker to Washington. </p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20131026093230/http://www.nj.com/essex/index.ssf/2013/10/cory_booker_quintana_will_be_the_next_mayor.html#incart_river">In an interview this week</a>, Booker said he will be overseeing the transition out of Newark City Hall in the coming days focusing on crime, development deals and the city budget.</p> <p>"There are three urgent areas (where) there has to be a seamless transition," Booker said. </p> <p>He said he also plans to start working right away in his role as New Jersey's junior senator. </p> <p>"I’m a very focused person on the deliverables I need to get," he said. "What I’m going to Washington to do is to find ways to empower people here at home."</p> <p>Booker was elected in a tough race against Republican Steve Lonegan to fill out the remainder of U.S. Sen.
