At WINDOW, Boadwee presents How Much is that Froggy in the Window? which features portraits of frogs, poodles, and emo kids in various poses of reflection while vaping, smoking, holding flowers, or getting ready for a boozy drink. Boadwee, known for his transgressive, psychosexual work that has tested social conventions and acquainted viewers with rebellious subject matter and the artist’s bodily functions as a means to paint, has recently focused on a cast of rather relaxed protagonists whose only predilection for bodily fluids is hinted at in their fondness for the occasional plume of cigarette smoke or water spill.In 2015, Boadwee started painting frogs, as an homage to a Viennese Actionist painting entitled “Froschkönig,” a naughty adaptation of the Brothers Grimm’s fairytale “The Frog Prince.” Gradually, Boadwee lead his amphibian figures away from overtly sexual overtones to develop a cast of characters equally startling and feisty yet reserved and cheeky. Poodles started entering the menagerie adding undisguised cuteness and symmetry to the intricately fractured compositions. The emo kids evolved as a response to a new gender landscape that has emerged strongly in the last decade. Smoking has been replaced with vaping, the oral fixation remaining strongly in place. Flowers with bent stems are forced to find space within the confines of the canvas, thereby responding to the paintings’ own formal parameters, as opposed to creating the illusion of looking through a window frame into an ideal world. The cartoonish appearance of Boadwee’s paintings, implying a satirical but sincere undertow, is complemented by a rigorous formal grammar of symmetry, flat color planes, breaks in line logic, and simplification of shapes and form."> <meta name="robots" content="index, follow"> <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.antonkerngallery.com/" /> <meta property="fb:app_id" content="198347911566" /> <meta property="og:title" itemprop="name" content="Keith Boadwee: How Much is that... | Exhibitions | MutualArt"> <meta property="og:type" content="website"> <meta property="og:image" itemprop="image" content="https://media.mutualart.com/Images/2024_10/26/03/402136/4d9a1e65-d06a-4ced-add7-a8ca8f61881a-570.Jpeg"> <meta property="og:description" itemprop="description" content="California artist Keith Boadwee returns to New York for the first time since his spectacular joint exhibition with Nicole Eisenman at the FLAG Art Foundation in 2020/21. Boadwee, known for his transgressive, psychosexual work that has tested social conventions and acquainted viewers with rebellious subject matter and the artist’s bodily functions as a means to paint, has recently focused on a cast of rather relaxed protagonists whose only predilection for bodily fluids is hinted at in their fondness for the occasional plume of cigarette smoke or water spill.</p><p>In 2015, Boadwee started painting frogs, as an homage to a Viennese Actionist painting entitled “Froschkönig,” a naughty adaptation of the Brothers Grimm’s fairytale “The Frog Prince.” Gradually, Boadwee lead his amphibian figures away from overtly sexual overtones to develop a cast of characters equally startling and feisty yet reserved and cheeky. Poodles started entering the menagerie adding undisguised cuteness and symmetry to the intricately fractured compositions. The emo kids evolved as a response to a new gender landscape that has emerged strongly in the last decade. Smoking has been replaced with vaping, the oral fixation remaining strongly in place. These stand at varying heights of either seven, nine, or eleven feet tall and are arranged in a staggered grid formation that spans the exhibition space.</p><p>As Serra described: “In Every Which Way you confront the frontality of each cluster of plates first, and then turn depending on how much attention you pay. You’re led to make a horizontal shift instead of just walking diagonally or straight ahead. Turning around, walking backward, sliding across—that happens a lot in [my work from this period]. Also, due to its verticality—five of the sixteen slabs are eleven feet high—Every Which Way has more of an architectural reference than prior pieces.… It’s always there, not here. Even when you’re right up against it, it always evades you.… Like [being in the midst of a] city, Every Which Way forces you to make countersteps, twists, and turns continuously.”</p><p><br></p>" /> <div class="artist" itemprop="performer"> <meta itemprop="name" content="Richard Serra" /> </div> <div class="location" itemprop="location"> <meta itemprop="address" content="New York | USA" /> <meta itemprop="name" content="Richard Serra: Every Which Way" /> </div> <div class="img-box col-xs-4"> <a href="/Exhibition/Richard-Serra--Every-Which-Way/51613E48F27ABE57" class="thumbnail"> <img loading="lazy" src="https://media.mutualart.com/Images/2024_09/27/05/396145/c86ed829-deda-4c1a-a0db-c4cced365dff-338.Jpeg" alt="Richard Serra: Every Which Way - David Zwirner, New York (20th Street)" title="Richard Serra: Every Which Way - David Zwirner, New York (20th Street)" height="97px" /> </a> </div> <div class="event-details col-xs-8"> <div class="desc"> <div class="list-nearby"> <a href="/Exhibition/Richard-Serra--Every-Which-Way/51613E48F27ABE57" class="link"> <strong></strong>R<strong></strong>i<strong></strong>c<strong></strong>h<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>d<strong></strong> <strong></strong>S<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>:<strong></strong> <strong></strong>E<strong></strong>v<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>y<strong></strong> <strong></strong>W<strong></strong>h<strong></strong>i<strong></strong>c<strong></strong>h<strong></strong> <strong></strong>W<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>y<strong></strong> </a> </div> <div> <a href="/Gallery/David-Zwirner--New-York--20th-Street-/982EAE44622A5A83" class="describe venue link"> <strong></strong>D<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>v<strong></strong>i<strong></strong>d<strong></strong> <strong></strong>Z<strong></strong>w<strong></strong>i<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>n<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>,<strong></strong> <strong></strong>N<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>w<strong></strong> <strong></strong>Y<strong></strong>o<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>k<strong></strong> <strong></strong>(<strong></strong>2<strong></strong>0<strong></strong>t<strong></strong>h<strong></strong> <strong></strong>S<strong></strong>t<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>t<strong></strong>)<strong></strong> <meta content="David Zwirner, New York (20th Street)" /> </a> <div class="location"> <span class="icon icon-current_exhibitions_map_marker"></span> <a href='/ExhibitionSearchResults/Browse/New-York--NY--USA/3EA6E9E6E1BC33E0' class='link-secondary' >New York | USA</a> </div> </div> <div> <span class="date">Nov 07,2024</span> <span> - </span><span class="date">Dec 14,2024</span> <div class="btn-group save-to-calendar" title='Save to Calendar' data-placement='top' data-toggle='tooltip'> <i class='btn calendar m-icon-calendar_vector' data-toggle='dropdown' aria-haspopup='true' aria-expanded='false' onclick="clickOnNavigation('calendar', 'Richard Serra: Every Which Way')"></i> <ul class="dropdown-menu"> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/iCal?ItemID=51613E48F27ABE57" target="_blank">Outlook</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/Google?ItemID=51613E48F27ABE57" target="_blank">Google Calendar</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/iCal?ItemID=51613E48F27ABE57" target="_blank">iCalendar</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <script> $(function () {{ registerSaveToCalendar(); }});</script> <div class="list row"> <meta content="<p>Flower blooms at night invite us to delve into enchanting gardens after dark. Gardens require attention and care, slowly growing and evolving. The gardener must listen and negotiate the vast will and system of its universe. Each plant carries histories, symbolisms, mysteries, and mutations, emerging in these collages as emblems of adaptation. <a target="_blank" href="/Organization/Robert-Mann-Gallery/143A015139937D3C">Robert Mann Gallery</a> is pleased to present Night Gardens, a solo exhibition of <a target="_blank" href="/Artist/Mary-Mattingly/E0572116E8FBB4B4">works by Mary Mattingly</a> on view from December 12, 2024 through February 7, 2025.&nbsp;</p><p>Gardens produce food, medicine, fragrances of the earth—flowers, mulch, compost—textures, colors, and life. Birds, insects, and hidden movements stir in the dark, reminders that a garden is a world of its own. In this vibrant exhibition, Mattingly creates hyper-detailed images merging physical and digital realms into magical worlds.</p><p>The twelve images in this exhibition are set in riparian zones where biological life responds to shifting water levels; the stories of these precious ecosystems go back to ancient times. In some myths, lotuses and water lilies rise from waters. Similarly, the thistle, both cursed and cherished, embodies resilience, even dispelling melancholy with its roots.</p><p>Walking around Socrates Sculpture Park at twilight, the artist became inspired by the moonlit gardens. Mattingly took cuttings, scanned plants, painted and drew flowers, experimented with using fish tanks and mirrors, made flowers out of fabric, and used a digital program to further shape the subjects of her collages.&nbsp; Through these garden scenes, Mattingly “explores how disparate elements—ancient symbols, mythic blooms, evolving plants—come together to speak of survival, imagination, and transformation in a time of environmental upheaval. Night Gardens is an inquiry into the wild and shifting relationships between lifeforms, the self included.” In these images, Mattingly&nbsp; cultivates a garden that begins in reality and transforms into an ethereal myth of what could be.&nbsp; “The garden becomes a miniature world, echoing Foucault’s idea of a symbolic and even sacred enclosure—a universe in-between, where time and space, nature and artifice, history and future all overlap.”&nbsp;</p><p><br></p>" /> <div class="artist" itemprop="performer"> <meta itemprop="name" content="Mary Mattingly" /> </div> <div class="location" itemprop="location"> <meta itemprop="address" content="New York | USA" /> <meta itemprop="name" content="Mary Mattingly: Night Gardens" /> </div> <div class="img-box col-xs-4"> <a href="/Exhibition/Mary-Mattingly--Night-Gardens/D347661D935FB4E2" class="thumbnail"> <img loading="lazy" src="https://media.mutualart.com/Images/2024_11/26/03/408535/c5f1c2be-461e-44f6-b134-8a332deb33ea-338.Jpeg" alt="Mary Mattingly: Night Gardens - Robert Mann Gallery" title="Mary Mattingly: Night Gardens - Robert Mann Gallery" height="60px" /> </a> </div> <div class="event-details col-xs-8"> <div class="desc"> <div class="list-nearby"> <a href="/Exhibition/Mary-Mattingly--Night-Gardens/D347661D935FB4E2" class="link"> <strong></strong>M<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>y<strong></strong> <strong></strong>M<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>t<strong></strong>t<strong></strong>i<strong></strong>n<strong></strong>g<strong></strong>l<strong></strong>y<strong></strong>:<strong></strong> <strong></strong>N<strong></strong>i<strong></strong>g<strong></strong>h<strong></strong>t<strong></strong> <strong></strong>G<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>d<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>n<strong></strong>s<strong></strong> </a> </div> <div> <a href="/Gallery/Robert-Mann-Gallery/143A015139937D3C" class="describe venue link"> <strong></strong>R<strong></strong>o<strong></strong>b<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>t<strong></strong> <strong></strong>M<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>n<strong></strong>n<strong></strong> <strong></strong>G<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>l<strong></strong>l<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>y<strong></strong> <meta content="Robert Mann Gallery" /> </a> <div class="location"> <span class="icon icon-current_exhibitions_map_marker"></span> <a href='/ExhibitionSearchResults/Browse/New-York--NY--USA/3EA6E9E6E1BC33E0' class='link-secondary' >New York | USA</a> </div> </div> <div> <span class="date">Dec 12,2024</span> <span> - </span><span class="date">Feb 07,2025</span> <div class="btn-group save-to-calendar" title='Save to Calendar' data-placement='top' data-toggle='tooltip'> <i class='btn calendar m-icon-calendar_vector' data-toggle='dropdown' aria-haspopup='true' aria-expanded='false' onclick="clickOnNavigation('calendar', 'Mary Mattingly: Night Gardens')"></i> <ul class="dropdown-menu"> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/iCal?ItemID=D347661D935FB4E2" target="_blank">Outlook</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/Google?ItemID=D347661D935FB4E2" target="_blank">Google Calendar</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/iCal?ItemID=D347661D935FB4E2" target="_blank">iCalendar</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <script> $(function () {{ registerSaveToCalendar(); }});</script> <div class="list row"> <meta content="<p><a target="_blank" href="/Organization/Robert-Mann-Gallery/143A015139937D3C">Robert Mann Gallery</a> is pleased to announce our return to Chelsea, the vibrant art community where we first relocated to in 1999.&nbsp;</p><p>For the inaugural exhibition in our new gallery space, and in celebration of our 25+ year relationship with <a target="_blank" href="/Artist/Jeff-Brouws/0BF9D9412FBD7E85">artist Jeff Brouws</a>, Robert Mann Gallery is pleased to announce Jeff Brouws: Just About Everything, Someplace Else, on view from October 17 - December 6, 2024. This exhibition will showcase a selection of Brouws’s iconic photographs alongside several previously unseen works.&nbsp;</p><p>In Just About Everything, Someplace Else, Jeff Brouws brings together images that act as artifacts of history while continuing to speak to themes that resonant today: a sense of abandonment, loneliness, alienation, and the influence of technological change, in essence all suggestive of an American Dream that isn’t quite what it seems. In this show Brouws incorporates photographs from several series including his Ed Ruscha-influenced Language in the the Landscape, the Hopperesque images from the series Approaching Nowhere, and the discarded and franchised elements of our collective commercial environments that pay homage to, and update, the New Topographics.&nbsp;</p><p>Throughout his career Brouws has created a rich archive with an emphasis on documenting our built environment, a practice that he terms “visual anthropology.” In preserving the remnants of the American landscape he has created a photographic anthology that allows us to see the impact of economic and social forces as they play out, especially across non-urban areas of America. In these images a connecting thread is the highway, a central character and place upon which so much of American life unfolds.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p>" /> <div class="artist" itemprop="performer"> <meta itemprop="name" content="Jeff Brouws" /> </div> <div class="location" itemprop="location"> <meta itemprop="address" content="New York | USA" /> <meta itemprop="name" content="Jeff Brouws: Just About Everything, Someplace Else" /> </div> <div class="img-box col-xs-4"> <a href="/Exhibition/Jeff-Brouws--Just-About-Everything--Some/D4B618BBC8392B8C" class="thumbnail"> <img loading="lazy" src="https://media.mutualart.com/Images/2024_09/28/12/396361/64ab3bde-5a89-4c23-9d71-839867198898-338.Jpeg" alt="Jeff Brouws: Just About Everything, Someplace Else - Robert Mann Gallery" title="Jeff Brouws: Just About Everything, Someplace Else - Robert Mann Gallery" height="79px" /> </a> </div> <div class="event-details col-xs-8"> <div class="desc"> <div class="list-nearby"> <a href="/Exhibition/Jeff-Brouws--Just-About-Everything--Some/D4B618BBC8392B8C" class="link"> <strong></strong>J<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>f<strong></strong>f<strong></strong> <strong></strong>B<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>o<strong></strong>u<strong></strong>w<strong></strong>s<strong></strong>:<strong></strong> <strong></strong>J<strong></strong>u<strong></strong>s<strong></strong>t<strong></strong> <strong></strong>A<strong></strong>b<strong></strong>o<strong></strong>u<strong></strong>t<strong></strong> <strong></strong>E<strong></strong>v<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>y<strong></strong>t<strong></strong>h<strong></strong>i<strong></strong>n<strong></strong>g<strong></strong>,<strong></strong> <strong></strong>S<strong></strong>o<strong></strong>m<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>p<strong></strong>l<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>c<strong></strong>e<strong></strong> <strong></strong>E<strong></strong>l<strong></strong>s<strong></strong>e<strong></strong> </a> </div> <div> <a href="/Gallery/Robert-Mann-Gallery/143A015139937D3C" class="describe venue link"> <strong></strong>R<strong></strong>o<strong></strong>b<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>t<strong></strong> <strong></strong>M<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>n<strong></strong>n<strong></strong> <strong></strong>G<strong></strong>a<strong></strong>l<strong></strong>l<strong></strong>e<strong></strong>r<strong></strong>y<strong></strong> <meta content="Robert Mann Gallery" /> </a> <div class="location"> <span class="icon icon-current_exhibitions_map_marker"></span> <a href='/ExhibitionSearchResults/Browse/New-York--NY--USA/3EA6E9E6E1BC33E0' class='link-secondary' >New York | USA</a> </div> </div> <div> <span class="date">Oct 17,2024</span> <span> - </span><span class="date">Dec 06,2024</span> <div class="btn-group save-to-calendar" title='Save to Calendar' data-placement='top' data-toggle='tooltip'> <i class='btn calendar m-icon-calendar_vector' data-toggle='dropdown' aria-haspopup='true' aria-expanded='false' onclick="clickOnNavigation('calendar', 'Jeff Brouws: Just About Everything, Someplace Else')"></i> <ul class="dropdown-menu"> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/iCal?ItemID=D4B618BBC8392B8C" target="_blank">Outlook</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/Google?ItemID=D4B618BBC8392B8C" target="_blank">Google Calendar</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" href="/Service/Calendar/iCal?ItemID=D4B618BBC8392B8C" target="_blank">iCalendar</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <script> $(function () {{ registerSaveToCalendar();
