ESPN have announced officially that they will broadcast UFC in the UK, including UFC 101, BJ Penn v Kenny Florian.</p> <p>But I can reveal there will be further announcements in the next few days: there are more complexities to the coverage, which will be a bonus to UK viewers.</p> <p>First, though, to the ESPN details. ESPN will broadcast the Ultimate Fighting Championship – along with French Rugby Championship, Australian Football League, Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters and FIBA European Basketball Championships</p> <p>These latest acquisitions will be broadcast on the new ESPN channel which is set to launch on Monday August 3 on Sky Channel 417 and in High Definition on Sky Channel 443.</p> <p>Jeroen Oerlemans, ESPN’s Vice President, TV Channels Europe, Middle East and Africa said: “ESPN’s aim is to serve UK and Ireland sports fans by bringing the very best of both domestic and international live sport to their living rooms. We are delighted to add UFC, TOP 14 ORANGE, the leading French Rugby Championship, the Australia Football League, EuroBasket and DTM to our growing portfolio of live sport.”</p> <p>ESPN’s take: ‘Featuring the world’s elite fighters, the UFC is the fastest growing sports organization in the world. UFC athletes compete in the world-famous Octagon across five weight divisions and use a mixture of martial arts including boxing, kickboxing, Olympic wrestling, karate, Brazilian jiu-jitsu among many others.’</p> <p>‘ESPN’s exclusive rights will see the channel air all the UFC action from around the world, beginning with UFC 101: Declaration on 8th August, which features the UFC Lightweight Title bout between BJ Penn and number one contender Kenny Florian as well as pound-for-pounder Anderson Silva stepping up to face light heavyweight Forrest Griffin. The thing that gets me is I dont have Sky. I will have to subscribe at least for the minimum package and then pay £12 (providing I dont get sky sports as well) for ESPN. I will then no doubt have to pay a PPV view for each live event. Why do channels such as ESPN insist on having subscription charges. Essentially to watch UFC is gonna cost me £25 min per month, plus a PPV of approx £15 im guessing. It will also be shown to Top Up TV customers who subscribe to TV Favourites or Picturebox.</p> <p>If you aren’t a subscriber but would like to see the channel whilst it’s available for free, then you can do so by calling Top Up TV and asking to subscribe to ESPN. First off, NASN answered emails - ESPN American don’t. Worse than that, they’re in the process of wiping the slate of 24/7 US sports coverage clean and going back to the bad old days, relegating it to the middle of the night. Sure, that’s when the live games happen but the beauty of NASN was that you could turn it on 24 hours a day and watch it - you weren’t forced to sit up half the night to watch a baseball, hockey or college football game, although if you wanted to you could. That was the beauty, choice.
