The private, nonprofit Institute provides a vital public service by working outside the framework of government to ensure scientifically informed analysis and independent guidance for national, state, and local policymakers, academic leaders, health professionals, and health care administrators. <p class="MsoNormal">The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is in the thick of some of the most critical health policy issues facing the country. These include the safety of prescription drugs, improvements in the quality of health care, guidelines for the use of stem cells in research, new dietary intake recommendations, vaccine safety, bioterrorism and public health preparedness, disparities in access to health care, assessment of President Bush鈥檚 Africa AIDS initiative, and many more. <p class="MsoNormal"> <hr> <p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b>Capacity-Building Support</b> <p class="MsoNormal">The IOM's body of work and the values that guide its operations--independence, objectivity, expertise, and grounding in evidence--are unmatched. While many of the Institute's studies are requested and funded by the federal government, the IOM relies on private funding for other initiatives that are essential for advancing and disseminating scientific knowledge to improve human health. <p class="MsoNormal">Capacity-Building support helps advance our work in areas such as measuring and improving the quality of health care, uninsurance, childhood obesity, and health literacy. Private funding enables the IOM to pursue these and other significant opportunities, to lead meaningful change in the nation's health care system, and to improve health nationally and globaly. <ul type="square"> <li> <div class="MsoNormal"><a href="/web/20071011141640/http://www.iom.edu/?id=43487">Read Dr. Fineberg鈥檚 2007 Annual Appeal</a></div></li></ul> <p class="MsoNormal"> <hr> <p> <p class="MsoNormal"><b>Anniversary Fellows Program</b> <p class="MsoNormal">The Institute of Medicine brings together talented and dedicated members, staff, and other experts to conduct its work in support of its role as adviser to the nation to improve health. The activities of IOM boards and committees offer an exceptional learning environment where the most eminent researchers, policy experts, and clinicians from across the country work together to provide a nonpartisan, wholly objective research perspective to national, state, and local policymakers, academic leaders, and health care administrators. <p class="MsoNormal">The Institute is uniquely qualified to make such an experience available to selected, "early career" faculty and future leaders. The purpose of the IOM Anniversary Fellows Program, created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Institute鈥檚 establishment, is to enable talented early career health science scholars to participate actively in the work of the IOM and to further their careers as future leaders in the field. <p class="MsoNormal">The Fellowships will be awarded for a two-year period during which the Fellows will be expected to continue their work at their main academic posts. Fellows will be assigned to a board of the IOM and will attend its meetings as well as participate actively in the work of an appropriate expert study committee, including contributing to its report. The Fellows will also take part in a one-week orientation to health policy in Washington, DC. <p class="MsoNormal">In addition, the Fellows will each be assigned a senior mentor from their IOM committee for the duration of the Fellowship. We anticipate that the benefits in terms of professional connections, learning experience, and exposure to the policy arena in Washington will attract an outstanding pool of applicants from a range of health-related disciplines. <p class="MsoNormal"><b><i>Goal:</i></b> The Institute seeks $5 million to endow the Fellowship Program.
