indeed, the hands<MH3027> of the officials<MH8269> and the leaders<MH5461> have taken<MH1961> the lead<MH7223> in this<MH2088> unfaithfulness<MH4604>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>When I heard<MH8085> about this<MH2088> matter<MH1697>, I tore<MH7167> my garment<MH899b> and my robe<MH4598>, and pulled<MH4803> out<MH4803> some<MH4480> of the hair<MH8181> from my head<MH7218> and my beard<MH2206>, and sat<MH3427> down<MH3427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>appalled<MH8074>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then everyone<MH3605> who was frightened<MH2730a> by the words<MH1697> of the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> on<MH5921> account<MH5921> of<MH5921> the unfaithfulness<MH4604> of the exiles<MH1473> gathered<MH622> to me, and I sat<MH3427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>appalled<MH8074> until<MH5704> the evening<MH6153> offering<MH4503>. <p class="hdg">Prayer of Confession</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But at the evening<MH6153> offering<MH4503> I stood<MH6965> up<MH6965> from my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>humiliation<MH8589>, even with my garment<MH899b> and my robe<MH4598> torn<MH7167>, and I bowed<MH3766> down<MH3766> on my knees<MH1290> and spread<MH6566> out<MH6566> my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>hands<MH3709> to the LORD<MH3068> my God<MH430>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>and I said<MH559>, “My God<MH430>, I am<MH954> ashamed<MH954> and humiliated<MH3637> to lift<MH7311> up<MH7311> my face<MH6440> to You, my God<MH430>, for our wrongful<MH5771> deeds<MH5771> have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>risen<MH7235a> above<MH4605> our heads<MH7218>, and our guilt<MH819> has grown<MH1431> even<MH5704> to the heavens<MH8064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Since<MH4480> the days<MH3117> of our fathers<MH1> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117> we <i>have been</i> in great<MH1419> guilt<MH819>, and because of our wrongful<MH5771> deeds<MH5771> we, our kings<MH4428>, <i>and</i> our priests<MH3548> have been handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the kings<MH4428> of the lands<MH776>, to the sword<MH2719>, to captivity<MH7628b>, to plunder<MH961>, and to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>open<MH6440> shame<MH1322>, as <i>it is</i> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But now<MH6258> for a brief<MH4592> moment<MH7281> grace<MH8467> has been<MH1961> <i>shown</i> from the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>, to leave<MH7604> us an escaped<MH6413> remnant<MH6413> and to give<MH5414> us a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>peg<MH3489> in His holy<MH6944> place<MH4725>, so that our God<MH430> may enlighten<MH215> our eyes<MH5869> and grant<MH5414> us a little<MH4592> reviving<MH4241> in our bondage<MH5659>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For we are slaves<MH5650>; yet in our bondage<MH5659> our God<MH430> has not abandoned<MH5800a> us, but has extended<MH5186> favor<MH2617a> to us in the sight<MH6440> of the kings<MH4428> of Persia<MH6539>, to give<MH5414> us reviving<MH4241> to erect<MH7311> the house<MH1004> of our God<MH430>, to restore<MH5975> its ruins<MH2723>, and to give<MH5414> us a wall<MH1447> in Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“And now<MH6258>, our God<MH430>, what<MH4100> shall we say<MH559> after<MH310> this<MH2088>? For we have abandoned<MH5800a> Your commandments<MH4687>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>which<MH834> You have commanded<MH6680> by Your servants<MH5650> the prophets<MH5030>, saying<MH559>, ‘The land<MH776> which<MH834> you are entering<MH935> to possess<MH3423> is an unclean<MH5079> land<MH776> with the uncleanness<MH5079> of the peoples<MH5971a> of the lands<MH776>, with their abominations<MH8441> which<MH834> have filled<MH4390> it from end<MH6310> to end<MH6310>, <i>and</i> with their impurity<MH2932a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So now<MH6258> do not give<MH5414> your daughters<MH1323> to their sons<MH1121> nor<MH408> take<MH5375> their daughters<MH1323> for your sons<MH1121>, and never<MH3808> seek<MH1875> their peace<MH7965> or their prosperity<MH2899b>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> you may be strong<MH2388> and may eat<MH398> the good<MH2898> <i>things</i> of the land<MH776>, and leave<MH3423> <i>it</i> as<MH3423> an<MH3423> inheritance<MH3423> to your sons<MH1121> forever<MH5704, 5769>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And after<MH310> everything<MH3605> that has come<MH935> upon us for our evil<MH7451a> deeds<MH4639> and our great<MH1419> guilt<MH819>, since<MH3588> You our God<MH430> have spared<MH2820> <i>us by inflicting</i> less<MH4295> than<MH4480> our wrongdoing<MH5771> <i>deserves,</i> and have given<MH5414> us <i>such</i> an escaped<MH6413> remnant<MH6413> as this<MH2088>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>shall we again<MH7725> break<MH6565a> Your commandments<MH4687> and intermarry<MH2859> with the peoples<MH5971a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>who commit these<MH428> abominations<MH8441>?
