While according to Kant, and countless other philosophers, these propositions can only be explained through subjective principles and categories or equally subjective forms of sense-perception, all of which are rooted in the subject and do not allow access to “things in themselves,” this article tries to show the break-through of realist phenomenlogists in explaining synthetic a priori knowledge in terms of its object. It shows that true synthetic propositions a priori can only be grounded if the human intellect gains access to intrinsically necessary and intelligible essences that are valid for the real and any possible world and are discovered, not made, by the subject. While this knowledge is independent from inductive empirical experience, it requires another kind of experience of necessary essences. In this way, phenomenology is linked again to the great tradition of Platonic-Augustinian philosophy and realism as well as giving to empiricism an entirely new character and meaning.
