Unfortunately, the way the credit reporting industry is set up, most services like LifeLock have to have a relationship with one or more of the credit bureaus in order to be able to provide accurate information to consumers. Guessing would not have the same impact as pulling real data, as you can imagine. </p> <p>Regarding investigators, if professional work is needed (such as the hiring of a lawyer or other expert), that is covered under LifeLock’s insurance policy. As you have noted, much of the restoration services offered by LifeLock and similar companies can be done for free by an individual — those who choose to sign up for and use this type of service benefit from having someone to help them along the process. It isn’t for everyone, and it is completely fine for anyone who chooses to do the work themselves utilizing resources like identitytheft.gov and their local police department.
