"> <div class="uk-grid" data-uk-grid-margin> <div class="uk-width-medium-1-1"> <h3>Kalevala characters</h3> <p>Väinämöinen (male). A sage and a warlock / sorcerer who knows how to ”sing things true” (the Finnish word ”sankari”, the hero, is based on an ancient scandinavian word ”sangare”, meaning ”a singer”). He is able e.g. to make a boat by singing it true. Plays kannel (or kantele), a harp-like instrument, and the most famous of his instruments is made from the jawbones of a monstrous pike fish. </p> <p>Joukahainen (male): A young guy who tries to duel with Väinämöinen with songs. Losing the competition, promises his sister Aino to Väinämöinen to avoid further shame.</p> <p>Aino (female): A young girl that rather drowns herself than surrenders to the old chap Väinämöinen. She’s not as often seen as a symbol of chastity but a symbol of self-determination.</p> <p>Seppo Ilmarinen (male, literally ”The Smith of the Air”), a master smith that forges Sampo, the machine that produces infinite wealth (a mill that yields gold, salt and grain). Seppo forges also a mechanical eagle with which he flies and – after losing a loved one – makes a golden lady to compensate his loss.</p> <p>Kullervo (male), a tragic character that is as an orphan abused by step-parents and craves revenge. This is not a child-play guy at all, he is very violent, likes war and happens eventually to seduce his own sister. The most famous story of Kullervo is a scene in which the nasty mistress of the house sends young Kullervo to work as a shepherd and gives him a small bread for lunch, but she has baked a stone in it and Kullervo goes berserk and tells the bears and wolves of the forest to attack the house and kill everyone.</p> <p>Louhi (female) is a very wealthy and respected lady who desperately wants to have the Sampo for herself. She is also a very powerful woman, she is e.g. a spacechanger. An antagonist to Väinämöinen. Often depicted as a slightly older woman wearing showy headpieces and jewerly. </p> <p>Lemminkäinen (male, literally ”The Man of Love”) is a famous womaniser and loves fighting.</p> <p>Kyllikki (female) is the bride of Lemminkäinen who in a way betrays him. They have a deal: if Lemminkäinen does not go to war, Kyllikki doesn’t go to the village dances. But she can’t resist, goes to the dances, Lemminkäinen goes to war and the couple separates.</p> <p>Lemminkäinen’s Mother (she doesn’t have a name) is very well known because of her undying love for her reprobate son. When L is killed, dismembered and thrown into the black waters of Tuonelan joki (”The river of the underworld”) the mother finds the pieces, puts them together and actually manages to revive her son with the help of a honey bee. (The river of Tuonela has inspired many artists such as the famous composer Sibelius, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170810002400/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRTJt2kDKJ0" class="external" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRTJt2kDKJ0</a>. The Swan of Tuonela swims in the river.)</p> <hr class="uk-grid-divider"> <h3>Myth & folklore deities and other characters</h3> <p>Ilmatar (female, literally ”The lady of the air) is the main deity that created the world. In the beginning of time there was only water and air. Ilmatar was the only creature existing. She swam in the sea and got impregnated from the sea wind but the child did not get born and Ilmatar was very sad. She was floating in the sea and a duck (Athya species, to be exact) came and laid eggs on her knee that was sticking out of the water. There were six golden ones and one of iron. Ilmatar moved her knee and the eggs broke. The halves of the shells formed the sky and the land, the yolks formed the sun, the whites the moon and the remaining crumbs the stars and the clouds. Still the child (who vas Väinämöinen the great hero and sage, see above) wasn’t born until he himself decided to dig himself out from Ilmatar’s womb.</p> <p>Antero Vipunen is a giant sage that sleeps underground and possesses all the knowledge of the world. Väinämöinen entered Antero Vipunen’s stomach via his mouth when he has searched for missing words for his spells.</p> <p>Ukko is the god of thunder (In Finnish a thunderstorm is ”Ukonilma”, ”Ukko’s weather”).<br/> Rauni is his wife. Also a weather god, the goddess of thunder, but also a goddess of fertility.<br/> These two are often considered as the ”supreme gods” (like Zeus and Hera in Greek mythology) but this feature may be of late origin.</p> <h4>The deities of the forest</h4> <p>Mielikki is the female deity of the forest. It is said that Mielikki is also a deity of beauty because the forest is beautiful. She is also a healer and should be asked favours and being flattered when one was going hunting. She is depicted sometimes dressed with coniferous leaves, moss etc., sometimes she is called ”the one with blue cloak”.</p> <p>Mielikki’s husband is Tapio, king of the forest who was responsible of the big game.</p> <p>Their daughter Tellervo is often asked to look after cattle. She’s mentioned to be yellow-haired wearing in a dress made of mist. Their son Nyyrikki is not that well known but also might give the hunters small game when properly asked. Sometimes the sources mention other daughters (Tyytikki, Tuulikki, Annikki). Tuulikki is an interesting name that is based on the word ”wind”; she has perhaps also been a minor weather deity.</p> <p>One should also remember (when talking about the forest folk) ”sinipiika” (pl. ”sinipiiat”), literally ”The Blue Maidens”. Sometimes they are considered to be also daughters of Tapio and Mielikki. These are small, light, fairy-like creatures that dance on meadows and may lure young men to get lost in the forest.</p> <p>Liekkiö was an old deity of trees, grass and roots, but later has metamorphosed to a ghost-like creature that follows people walking in the forest and calls out with disturbing voices, sometimes imitating the walkers. Sometimes Liekkiö was considered to be the soul of a murdered child.</p> <h4>The deities of the waters</h4> <p>Vellamo is the mistress of the waters, often described as a beauty that dresses in sea froth. Ahti is her husband, the water god.</p> <p>Vetehinen is a water spirit, kind of a male mermaid, sometimes considered evil, sometimes a good chap who gives fishermen good luck when asked to.</p> <p>Tursas is a water deity or even a sea (or lake) monster. It is often called ”Iku-Turso”, the ”Iku” meaning eternal. In some sources Tursas looks like a walrus and behaves a lot of like some lovecraftian creature that spreads horror.</p> <p>Näkki is a water spirit that may dwell in rivers, springs, lakes, ponds, wells etc. and is the one who may lure careless children to to get drowned. Kids learned to avoid these dangerous places because they were told that if one goes too close to the edge of water, Näkki may take them to his realm.</p> <h4>The deities of agriculture</h4> <p>Sampsa Pellervoinen (male) is the deity that is responsible for all the growing plants, woods and meadows. He might be also considered as a male god of fertility. In Kalevala he helps Väinämöinen to make the recently created world to flourish with plant life.</p> <p>Rongoteus (male) was responsible of rye, Pellonpekko (male) of barley and Virankannos (or Vironkannos) of oats.</p> <p>Äkräs (male) is the deity of some common crops, like cabbage, linen, beans and hemp.</p> <h4>Others</h4> <p>Loviatar (female, perhaps a version of Louhi):<br/> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170810002400/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loviatar" class="external" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loviatar</a></p> <p>Luonnotar (female), there are several of them (pl. ”Luonnottaret”, literally ”Ladies of the Nature”) who seem to be pretty powerful and make appearances e.g. in Kalevala producing / creating iron for the use of mankind from their breast milk.</p> <p>Lempo and Hiisi are kind of demons, Lempo is more or less a primitive version of the biblical devil, Hiisi is a large troll-like creature. There are still everyday sayings in Finland like ”go to Hiisi” or ”may Hiisi take [you or something else] to its realm” when someone has behaved badly or there is some other misfortune.</p> </p></div>
