The temple, built by Solomon, was a symbol of God's presence among His people. The warning of it becoming a "heap of rubble" is a prophetic indication of divine judgment due to disobedience. Historically, this prophecy was fulfilled when the Babylonians destroyed the temple in 586 BC. The imagery of a "heap of rubble" signifies complete desolation and serves as a stark warning of the consequences of turning away from God.
all who pass by it will be appalled and will hiss
The reaction of those who pass by—being "appalled" and "hissing"—reflects a common ancient Near Eastern expression of scorn and derision. This reaction underscores the shame and disgrace that would accompany the destruction of such a significant and sacred site. The hissing is a gesture of contempt, indicating that the downfall of the temple would be seen as a public spectacle and a cautionary tale for other nations.
and say, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’
This question highlights the recognition that the destruction is an act of divine judgment. It implies that the surrounding nations would understand that the calamity was not due to mere political or military failure but was a direct consequence of the Israelites' unfaithfulness to their covenant with God. This echoes the covenantal warnings found in Deuteronomy 28, where blessings and curses are outlined based on Israel's obedience or disobedience. The inquiry also points to the broader theme of God's sovereignty and justice, as well as His desire for His people to remain faithful.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Solomon
The king of Israel who built the temple, which is the subject of God's warning in this passage.

2. The Temple
The magnificent house built by Solomon for the LORD, symbolizing God's presence among His people.

3. The LORD (Yahweh)
The covenant God of Israel, who is warning Solomon about the consequences of disobedience.

4. Israel
The nation chosen by God, whose faithfulness or lack thereof will determine the fate of the temple and the land.

5. Passersby
Those from other nations who will witness the desolation of the temple and question the reasons for its destruction.
Teaching Points
The Conditional Nature of God's Promises
God's promises often come with conditions that require our obedience and faithfulness. The true meaning is certainly "This house shall be high;" which is the reading of the LXX., while the Vulg. has a good explanatory gloss, "This house shall be for an example." Various corrections have been proposed, but there seems no necessity for them. There is evidently an allusion to the lofty position of the Temple. Generally the exaltation of "the mountain of the Lord" is made a type of its glory (as in Micah 4:1-2; Psalm 68:15-16, &c.); here of its destruction. Its magnificence and its ruin are equally conspicuous: for "a city set on a hill cannot be hid."

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 8. - And at this house, which is high [Heb., And this house shall be high, עֶלְיון יִהְיֶה. Our translators were probably influenced by 2 Chronicles 7:21, the text of which is אֲשֶׁר הָיהָ עֶלְיון which would seem to be an emendation, designed to clear up the difficulty rather than an accidental variation of the text. But here the literal rendering is probably the truer, the meaning being "this house shall be conspicuous, as an example" - so the Vulg. domus haec erit in exemplum. The LXX. accords with the Hebrew text, ὁ οῖκος οῦτος ἔσται ὁ ὐψηλὸς, but the Syriac and Arabic read, "this house shall be destroyed." Keil sees in the words an allusion implicite to Deuteronomy 26:19, and Deuteronomy 28:1, where God promises to make Israel עֶלְיון, and says "the blessing will be turned into a curse." The temple should indeed be "high," should be what Israel would have been, but it shall be as a warning, etc.; but this connexion is somewhat far fetched and artificial. Thenius would read for, עִיִּין עֶלְיון.
