But how? Lots of talk about AI remains vague, missing both the general overview and the relevant specifics. So let’s focus on both. For the big picture, we give the floor to Neil Cawse, founder and CEO of Geotab. </strong></p> <p>At the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLHlqjVitQ0">Fleet Europe Days</a>, last October in Milan, Mr Cawse gave an impressive keynote speech on the potential, both positive and negative, of AI. </p> <p>Interviewer Steven Schoefs, Head of Strategic Relations at Nexus Communication, asked for Mr Cawse’s feelings on a couple of provocative statements on AI, like this one from Sam Altman, former CEO of Open AI: “AI will probably most likely lead to the end of the world, but in the meantime, there'll be great companies.”</p> <h2>Risk horizons</h2> <p>Mr Cawse didn’t fundamentally disagree. He identified three risk horizons:</p> <ul> <li>In the short term: the question of who owns the data. “This is user-generated data – our data”.</li> <li>In the medium term: the danger of bad actors. “It takes $500 million to train a large language model, and that’s money only tech monopolies have”.</li> <li>And in the long term: there is an existential risk. Why existential? Because we can’t see an upper limit to how smart AI will get, and “you can’t control something that’s smarter than you”. </li> </ul> <p>It’s up to philosophers and regulators to deal with the long-term, existential threat of AI. Meanwhile, possibly a greater danger, and certainly a more immediate one, is not adopting AI right now, while everyone else is doing so. “AI is not pie in the sky. It’s changing things right now”, said Mr Cawse. </p> <p>Mr Cawse pointed to the emergence of <a href="https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/autonomous/germany/article/vw-introduce-robotaxis-hamburg?a=FJA05&t%5B0%5D=Autonomous&t%5B1%5D=Volkswagen&curl=1">robotaxi services</a>: “It’s been predicted for a long time, and it’s taken a long time to arrive. But it’s here, and it will be very impactful on the industry.” AI-powered autonomous driving will transform who uses the car (sharing becomes easier), what we do in the car (working rather than driving), and where we park it (an autonomous car can drive itself home, removing the need for giant airport car parks, for example). </p> <h2>Fifth Avenue</h2> <p>Urging everyone to get started with AI, Mr Cawse related the anecdote of two pictures of Fifth Avenue in New York, taken 13 years apart in the early 20th century. All but one of the vehicles in the picture from 1900 were horse-drawn, with just one automobile. In 1913, the situation was exactly the opposite: one horse-drawn carriage, hundreds of cars. The mobility paradigm had completely shifted, in less than a decade and a half.  </p> <p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/fifth_avenue.png" /></p> <p>The same thing will happen – is already happening – with AI in fleet management. The Fleet Europe Summit provided plenty of specific examples. </p> <ul> <li> <h3>Dynamic vehicle lifecycles</h3> </li> </ul> <p>With business customers demanding ever greater levels of flexibility from their vehicle suppliers, the leasing formulas are diversifying beyond the classic three-year lease, to include seasonal leases, used-car leases, to create a veritable on-demand fleet. “But this multi-life cycle approach is just an interim step towards a dynamic life cycle”, said Philippe Huysmans, Chief Growth Officer at Ridecell. A dynamic lifecycle means “vehicles will be monitored constantly for usage, <a href="https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/safety/europe/features/reduce-your-costs-through-preventive-maintenance?t%5B0%5D=Fleet%20Management&curl=1">preventive maintenance</a>, and predicted market value.” This will help determine the right moment to defleet individual vehicles, in order to maximise their resale value. AI is the perfect tool for crunching the vast amounts of data involved, and making the right decision. </p> <ul> <li> <h3>Driver behaviour</h3> </li> </ul> <p>Corrado Sciolla, CEO at Octo Telematics, pointed to his company’s remarkable success in implementing telematics for insurance purposes. AI-supported telematics is used to analyse driver behaviour, accidents and accident damage, and even CO2 emissions. It has helped reduce the cost of insurance by 40%, and car accidents by 18%. </p> <ul> <li> <h3>Transitioning to EVs</h3> </li> </ul> <p>Mathieu Chènebit, CEO and founder of Echoes, made the point that using AI to offer customers harmonized, actionable data “is not the future, it’s what we do today”. It’s a service with many use cases, from transitioning to EVs and monitoring TCO to fighting fraud and emissions. </p> <ul> <li> <h3>Efficient fleet management</h3> </li> </ul> <p>Michele Cipullo, Targa Telematics, Go To Market Manager at Targa Telematics, explained the main job of companies like his in mainstreaming more efficient and cost-effective LCV fleet management, also using AI: “Remove the technical complexities from the discussion.
