This page provides an overview of private sector construction projects within Kitimat with a capital cost of $15 million or greater.<br><br></p> <p class="Left">See our list of projects below.</p> <p><img class="Center" src="/en/business-and-development/resources/2020_Photos_Unknown_Kitimat-Industry_Coastal-Gas-Link-Construction_LNG-Terminal-work.png" alt="" width="792" height="469"> </p> <table class="icrtAccordion" border="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td data-name="accParent"> <h2>Rio Tinto Modernization Project (2011 - 2015) - Complete</h2> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accChild"> <p>The $4.8 billion (US) Kitimat Modernization Project has increased the Rio Tinto aluminium smelter's production capacity by 48% to approximately 420,000 tonnes of aluminum ingot per year, using the most cost effective, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly technology available.</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accParent"> <h2>Rio Tinto Kemano T2 Project (2017 - 2022) - Complete</h2> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accChild"> <p>The Rio Tinto aluminium smelter in Kitimat is run on hydroelectric power from their Kemano powerhouse.  The powerhouse receives water from the Nechako River resevoir via a single tunnel that is over 60 years old.  Completion of a second tunnel will ensure the long-term reliability of the power supply.</p> <p><a title="Open new window to view Rio Tinto BC Works" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/releases/2022/rio-tinto-completes-kemano-hydropower-project" target="_blank" aria-label="Rio Tinto BC Works opens in new window">Rio Tinto BC Works</a></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accParent"> <h2>LNG Canada (2018 - 2025) - Active</h2> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accChild"> <p>On October 1, 2018, <a title="Open new window to view https://www.lngcanada.ca/" href="https://www.lngcanada.ca/" target="_blank" aria-label="LNG Canada opens in new window">LNG Canada</a> made a final investment decision to proceed with construction of an LNG export facility in Kitimat, the first LNG export facility in the country and the largest private sector investment in Canadian history at an estimated $40 billion. Construction of the project is currently underway and is expected to be completed in 2025.</p> <p>Two processing units, or "trains" will be used to export an estimated 14 million tonnes per annum of liquified natural gas with the potential to expand to four trains in the future. The project consists of construction and operation of natural gas treatment facilities, liquefaction and storage facilities, marine terminal facilities, an interconnecting cryogenic transfer pipeline, and supporting infrastructure. Approximately 4,500 - 7,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase and about 300 employees will be required for operation of the facility.  The first phase of this project is now about 85% complete.</p> <p>LNG Canada is a joint venture led by Shell (40% interest) along with Petronas (25%), PetroChina (15%), Mitsubishi (15%) and KOGAS (5%).</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accParent"> <h2>LNG Canada's Cedar Valley Lodge (2018 - 2021) - Complete</h2> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accChild">Cedar Valley Lodge is a workforce accommodation centre adjacent to the LNG Canada work site. It can house up to 4500 people in single room accommodation, each with their own private shower and washroom. The 1.2 million square foot facility includes a medical clinic, multiple dining options, fitness and recreation facilities including a full-sized basketball court, running track, and climbing wall, and many other entertainment facilities. <p> </p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accParent"> <h2>Coastal GasLink Pipeline (2019 - Present) - Active</h2> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accChild">Approximately 670 kilometres the <a title="Open new window to view Coastal GasLink" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.coastalgaslink.com/" target="_blank" aria-label="Coastal GasLink opens in new window">Coastal GasLink</a> pipeline project, owned by TC Energy, will safely deliver natural gas across northern B.C., from northeast B.C. to the LNG Canada export facility here in Kitimat. <p>The project has now reached mechanical completion.  Once commissioned, the pipeline will have the capacity to move 1.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. About 2,000 - 2,500 construction jobs are created over the construction period.</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accParent"> <h2>Pacific Trail Pipeline - On Hold</h2> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accChild"> <p><img class="Center" src="/en/business-and-development/resources/Images/KLNG-site-and-RTA-docks.jpg" alt="Kitimat LNG site aerial photo" width="729" height="322"></p> <p> </p> <p>The proposed <a title="Open new window to view Pacific Trail Pipeline" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://canada.chevron.com/-/media/canada/our-businesses/documents/chevron-pacific-trail-pipeline-2018.pdf" target="_blank" aria-label="Pacific Trail Pipeline opens in new window">Pacific Trail Pipeline</a> (PTP) project includes a 42 inch, 470 km pipeline that will supply natural gas from Summit Lake (north of Prince George, BC) to Kitimat. Once completed, the pipeline is expected to move three billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.</p> <p>While the project has been at different stages over the past ten years, Enbridge purchased the rights to the proposed pipeline in late 2021.</p> <p>The First Nations limited partnership for the PTP project ensures all 16 First Nations with traditional territory located along the pipeline route will receive immediate and long-term benefits from the project.</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accParent"> <h2>Cedar LNG - Proposed</h2> </td> </tr> <tr> <td data-name="accChild"> <p>The <a title="Open new window to view Cedar LNG" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.cedarlng.com/" target="_blank" aria-label="Cedar LNG opens in new window">Cedar LNG</a> Project is a proposed floating liquefied natural gas facility in Kitimat, within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. Cedar LNG will produce approximately three million tonnes of LNG per year. The facility will be interconnected to the existing BC Hydro transmission system, which will make Cedar LNG one of the lowest carbon intensity LNG facilities in the world.</p> <p>The Cedar LNG Project brings together the Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipeline Corporation (Pembina). The Project is a key element of the Haisla Nation鈥檚 economic and social development strategy and will further advance reconciliation by allowing the Haisla Nation to directly own and participate in a major industrial development in its territory.
