The psalmist is engaging in introspection, a common practice in the Psalms where the writer often speaks to themselves or to God. This reflects the personal nature of the Psalms as expressions of individual and communal lament, praise, and prayer.<p><b>I am grieved</b><br>The expression of grief here is significant, as it shows the depth of the psalmist's emotional turmoil. In the context of the Psalms, grief often arises from a sense of separation from God or a perceived absence of His intervention. This aligns with the broader biblical theme of lament, where believers express sorrow and seek God's presence and help.<p><b>that the right hand of the Most High</b><br>The "right hand" is a biblical metaphor for power and authority. In ancient Near Eastern culture, the right hand symbolized strength and the ability to act decisively. The "Most High" is a title for God, emphasizing His supreme authority and sovereignty. This phrase suggests a perceived change in God's powerful intervention in the psalmist's life or in the history of Israel.<p><b>has changed</b><br>The idea of change here implies a shift in God's actions or presence. This could reflect a historical context where Israel felt abandoned or punished, such as during the Babylonian exile. Theologically, it raises questions about God's immutability and faithfulness, themes explored throughout Scripture. The psalmist's perception of change contrasts with biblical affirmations of God's unchanging nature, inviting readers to trust in God's eternal constancy despite temporary circumstances.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/a/asaph.htm">Asaph</a></b><br>The author of <a href="/bsb/psalms/77.htm">Psalm 77</a>, Asaph was a prominent Levite singer and seer in David's court. So Symmachus, "my wound;" Aquila, "my sickness." Gesenius says, "that which makes my sickness." If we keep this meaning we must understand mental sickness or "madness," and understand the poet to say that to indulge in despairing cries is mere madness (comp. King Lear's, "Oh! that way madness lies"), he will recall God's ancient deliverances, and so re-establish his faith. But it seems more natural to take a sense which the cognate verb very commonly bears (<a href="/leviticus/19-8.htm" title="Therefore every one that eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned the hallowed thing of the LORD: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.">Leviticus 19:8</a>; <a href="/ezekiel/36-22.htm" title="Therefore say to the house of Israel, thus said the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for my holy name's sake, which you have profaned among the heathen, where you went.">Ezekiel 36:22</a>; <a href="/psalms/74-7.htm" title="They have cast fire into your sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of your name to the ground.">Psalm 74:7</a>; <a href="/psalms/89-39.htm" title="You have made void the covenant of your servant: you have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.">Psalm 89:39</a>), and render, "I said this (such despair) is on my part profanation, profanation of the years of the right hand of the Most High." To despair of continued help from One who had been so gracious in the past is a kind of blasphemy. The word "profanation" must be understood as repeated for the sake of <span class= "ital">the </span>grammar.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/psalms/77.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 10.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">And I said, This is my infirmity;</span> <span class="accented">i.e.</span> "the fault is not in God, but in myself" - in my own weakness and want of faith. There is no "I will remember" in the original, which expresses the thought of the writer imperfectly; but some such phrase must of necessity be supplied. The words are retained in the Revised Version and by Professor Cheyne. The remembrance of God's mercies during the many years that are past is that which best sustains us in a time of severe trouble. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/psalms/77-10.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">So I said,</span><br /><span class="heb">וָ֭אֹמַר</span> <span class="translit">(wā·’ō·mar)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_559.htm">Strong's 559: </a> </span><span class="str2">To utter, say</span><br /><br /><span class="word">“I am grieved</span><br /><span class="heb">חַלּ֣וֹתִי</span> <span class="translit">(ḥal·lō·w·ṯî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Infinitive construct | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2470.htm">Strong's 2470: </a> </span><span class="str2">To be weak or sick</span><br /><br /><span class="word">that the right hand</span><br /><span class="heb">יְמִ֣ין</span> <span class="translit">(yə·mîn)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine singular construct<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3225.htm">Strong's 3225: </a> </span><span class="str2">The right hand, side, the south</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of the Most High</span><br /><span class="heb">עֶלְיֽוֹן׃</span> <span class="translit">(‘el·yō·wn)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adjective - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5945.htm">Strong's 5945: </a> </span><span class="str2">An elevation, lofty, as title, the Supreme</span><br /><br /><span class="word">has changed.”</span><br /><span class="heb">הִ֑יא</span> <span class="translit">(hî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Pronoun - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1931.htm">Strong's 1931: </a> </span><span class="str2">He, self, the same, this, that, as, are</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/psalms/77-10.htm">Psalm 77:10 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/psalms/77-10.htm">OT Poetry: Psalm 77:10 Then I thought I will appeal (Psalm Ps Psa.) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/psalms/77-9.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Psalm 77:9"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Psalm 77:9" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/psalms/77-11.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Psalm 77:11"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Psalm 77:11" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
