Ils étaient sous la responsabilité des <a href="https://www.persee.fr/doc/mom_0985-6471_2015_ant_54_1_3608" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">agoranomes</a>, magistrats civiques qui veillaient à garantir l’honnêteté des transactions sur l’<em>agora</em> (le marché) ou à l’<em>emporion</em> (le port). Ils portaient des signes ou des inscriptions qui indiquaient des mesures. Ici, ce poids de <a href="https://pleiades.stoa.org/places/550497" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chios</a> pesant 1125 grammes est reconnaissable à la sphinge ailée assise sur une amphore et porte l’inscription ΔΥΟ ΜΝΑ pour deux mines ; l’autre face ne comporte ni inscription ni décor.</p> <p>La collection des poids gréco-romains de la <a href="http://www.bnf.fr/fr/acc/x.accueil.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">BnF</a> n’est pas très connue. Préalablement à sa numérisation et son intégration au portail en ligne du projet <a href="https://pondera.incal.ucl.ac.be/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">PONDERA</a>, un récent travail d’inventaire et de récolement a permis de mieux connaître l’histoire de ce fonds. Bonaparte, à la tête de l’aventure, souhaite inscrire cette expédition dans la lignée de celles de <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/11893227/louis_antoine_de_bougainville/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Louis-Antoine Bougainville</a>, de <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/fr/11897579/james_cook/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">James Cook</a> ou de <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/fr/11911032/jean-francois_de_galaup_la_perouse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jean-François de la Pérouse</a>.</p> <p style="text-align: justify">En juillet, se mêlant aux rangs de l’armée d’Orient, débarquent ainsi sur les côtes alexandrines les membres de la <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb14946043t" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Commission des sciences et des arts</a><sup><a href="#footnote_1_3127" id="identifier_1_3127" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Le 16 mars 1798, le Directoire adresse au Ministre de l’Intérieur l’arrêté confidentiel suivant : « Le Directoire exécutif, citoyen ministre, vous charge de mettre à la disposition du général Bonaparte les ingénieurs, artistes et autres subordonnés de votre ministère, ainsi que les différents objets qu’il vous demandera pour servit à l’expédition dont il est chargé. » Le groupe de savants qui accompagnera l’armée d’Orient en Égypte est officiellement créé.">2</a></sup>. Pendant les quatre années que durera l’aventure égyptienne, cette troupe hétéroclite de plus de 160 savants voit se côtoyer des hommes de formations et de spécialités diverses : ingénieurs pour la plupart, ils sont également antiquaires, architectes, astronomes, chimistes, mathématiciens, médecins ou pharmaciens, mécaniciens, musiciens, naturalistes et minéralogistes, dessinateurs, graveurs ou encore sculpteurs.</p> <p style="text-align: justify">Parmi eux, <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/fr/12421814/henri-joseph_redoute/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Henri-Joseph Redouté</a><sup><a href="#footnote_2_3127" id="identifier_2_3127" class="footnote-link footnote-identifier-link" title="Né à Saint-Hubert, en Ardenne, dans la province de Luxembourg, il y est baptisé le 25 mai 1766. Il a deux s&oelig;urs – Jeanne-Marie et Anne-Marie – et deux frères, Antoine-Ferdinand né en 1756 et Pierre-Joseph, le futur peintre des roses, « Raphaël des fleurs », né en 1759. Il est entré dans les collections du Cabinet des Médailles en 1800 grâce au botaniste <a href="http://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb125600685" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">André Michaux</a> qui l’avait trouvé en 1784 lors <a href="http://archeologie.culture.fr/orient-cuneiforme/fr/inventeur-caillou-andre-michaux" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">d’un voyage en Mésopotamie</a>, plus précisément au sud de Bagdad, au bord du Tigre, à proximité des ruines de l’ancienne Ctésiphon. Cette stèle de pierre noire, mesurant 46 cm x 20 cm et pesant près de 22 kg, date du règne de Marduk-nadin-ahhe, roi de Babylone de la dynastie d’Isin II entre 1099 à 1082 av. (<a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b11354332x" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bnf, MMA, E 3605</a>).</figcaption></figure> <p>En ces mois d’été baignés de soleil, nous présentons l’<em>Eukratideion, </em>la plus lourde monnaie d’or connue pour toute l’Antiquité, qualifiée de “monstre numismatique” par <a href="http://bibnum.enc.sorbonne.fr/files/original/305c9b1559974fb9c4cacc21e2db60f8.PDF" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Anatole Chabouillet en 1867</a>. Une telle dénomination n’était sûrement pas destinée à la circulation. Il s’agit probablement d’une récompense exceptionnelle produite à l’occasion d’une victoire ou d’un événement remarquable du règne d’<a href="https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucratide_Ier" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Eucratide Ier</a>. C’est encore à ce jour un <em>unicum</em>.</p> <p>Mis au jour avant 1837 dans les environs de <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/fr/list/602/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Boukhara</a> (actuel Ouzbékistan) par sept paysans, cette lourde pièce d’or suscite immédiatement la convoitise. D’après les journaux de l’époque, faute de pouvoir se partager ce fantastique objet, les découvreurs se battent au couteau pour sa possession : cinq d’entre eux sont tués dans la lutte. En 1837, un des deux survivants apporte la pièce à Londres pour la vendre. Par crainte d’un vol, il la conserve en permanence sous son aisselle dans une poche de cuir fabriquée à cet effet. Après avoir essuyé de nombreux refus – les musées et collectionneurs londoniens sont unanimes : une pièce si extraordinaire ne peut être qu’un faux – l’homme de Boukhara vend l’objet à un expert français résidant à Londres. Ce dernier le propose à la Bibliothèque Nationale (alors « impériale »). Mis au courant de l’affaire, l’empereur <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53112345h/f246.image" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Napoléon III accorde en 1867 la somme de 30 000 francs</a> pour que cette pièce exceptionnelle entre dans les collections du Cabinet des médailles.</p> <p><strong>Description :</strong> au droit, buste diadémé du souverain à droite, coiffé d’un casque à cimier orné d’une corne et d’une oreille de taureau. Elle est tirée d’un roman d’Alessandro Verri publié en 1784 <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8595081s/f5.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Le Avventure di Saffo </em></a>qui a connu un immense <a href="https://books.openedition.org/efr/32492" target="_blank" rel="noopener">succès d’édition en Europe</a>. Reprenant un procédé habituel de son époque visant à intéresser son lectorat tout en évitant la censure, Verri prétend que son roman est une simple traduction italienne d’un manuscrit rare en grec ancien. En réalité, il s’est inspiré d’un mythe postérieur à la vie de Sappho, lui-même <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9786033z/f218.image" target="_blank" rel="noopener">repris par Ovide</a>, poète latin du I<sup>er</sup> siècle ap. Dans sa version, Verri met l’accent sur l’âge de la poétesse : trop vieille pour continuer à plaire à Phaon, elle se lamente en apprenant que celui-ci fréquente une jeune fille. BnF, département des Monnaies, médailles et antiques, <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b550110635" target="_blank" rel="noopener">De Ridder.581</a> © BnF/Gallica</figcaption></figure> <p>Sappho jouait certainement de cet instrument composé d’une caisse de résonance en carapace de tortue sur laquelle deux bras en bois se fixent pour tendre les cordes (à ne pas confondre avec la <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k15164019/f21.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cithare</a>, composée d’un seul bloc de bois). Le décor naturel et la position alanguie de Sappho donnent cependant une coloration romantique à cet imaginaire antique. La lyre devient un symbole de sentimentalisme avant d’être un attribut des qualités musicales de Sappho. En effet, la poétesse est d’autant plus passionnée qu’elle est incapable de jouer de son instrument.</p> <p>La légende de l’image joue elle aussi sur une pseudo-authenticité philologique : ΦΑΙΝΟΜΑΙ ΑΠΝΟΥΣ « je me trouve sans souffle » est bien une citation d’un poème de Sappho transmis par le <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k9613570v/f180.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Traité du Sublime </em></a>de Longin et traduit pour la première fois en français par <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k8701042z/f460.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anne Dacier</a>. Ce poème, écrit à la première personne, décrit les symptômes du désir homoérotique ressenti par la locutrice à la vue d’une femme accompagnée par un homme non-identifié. Or, dans le contexte du roman de Verri, la citation est complètement détournée pour donner l’impression que c’est la pensée pour Phaon qui est à l’origine de cette perte de souffle.</p> <p>Cette image illustre ainsi parfaitement le processus qui a abouti à la création d’un lyrisme moderne entre la fin du XVIII<sup>e</sup> siècle et le début du XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle. En partant d’un imaginaire fantasmé de la poésie amoureuse grecque, les auteurs rompent avec la rationalité néoclassique, faisant de la lyre un symbole de la spontanéité des sentiments, et reléguant ainsi au second plan les qualités musicales des poètes dont ils prétendent s’inspirer. Ce processus annonciateur du romantisme est ici accompagné d’une double invisibilisation visant à faire de Sappho une figure de la femme amoureuse par excellence : effacement de l’homoérotisme de ses poèmes, et focalisation sur ses sentiments au détriment de ses qualités musicales.
