As someone who has been in the weeds of data over the past decade, one principle that I have always used while designing data systems is SOA. I call it “SODA” as you tweak core SOA principles to fit data properties and data governance needs. While the underlying principle remains the same, how you apply it at different layers i.e. application, data lake, data infrastructure, data science/ML vary. In this blog, I would like to highlight areas for applying SOA to each of these levels.</p><p id="7b0f" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk"><strong class="mi gv">SODA in Application layer</strong></p><p id="2031" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk">Applications are where the data is produced. It is critical to ensure that data produced is atomic, consistent, isolated, and durable. Success of SOA based ecosystem is the ability to implement cleaner APIs contracts. Data being the commodity of these contracts, its critical data definitions are included as part of the APIs definitions. Data definitions include data formats, types, ranges, integrity constraints, recency, and refresh policies, including any derivation logic. Refresh policy refers to when data is added, removed, merged, updated. As a downstream service, it needs to be extremely clear on what to expect from the data received from upstream services. Consumer Driven Contracts [CDC] have been a great tool to enforce this in my experience.</p><p id="fddb" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk"><strong class="mi gv">SODA in Data Lake</strong></p><p id="3eff" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk">More than half of the data quality issues are a result of lack of clear contracts across tables i.e. misinterpretation by the downstream queries. In this layer, each table should be treated as a service. Cleaner table definitions (including refresh policies), along with the data properties, helps maintain data integrity across the lake, including conformity across facts and dimensions .Table definitions should be treated as API contracts.</p><p id="e7fe" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk"><strong class="mi gv">SODA in Data Infrastructure</strong></p><p id="65b6" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk">Historically, a monolith system would try to serve for end to end data infrastructure needs. Be it orchestration, resource management, cataloging, anomaly detection, security, and so on. In the past decade, we have seen the introduction of tools that excel at each of these individually. SOA allows us to leverage best in class tools together. We no longer need to compromise one tool for the other. Introduction of unified platforms that talk across different formats will further open up our ability to adopt tools and frameworks of our choice — allowing us to build best in class data infrastructure.</p><p id="c68e" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk"><strong class="mi gv">SODA in DS/ML</strong></p><p id="5f0b" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk">As we build more and more data products, its critical to think about scalability of underlying models. Ability to leverage the same models, and ensure outcome integrity will be key. Adopting principles of SOA in building DS systems will be key as organizations double down their journey in AI. Breaking the problem statements into reusable pieces, and building micro models will be critical to enable this architecture. Each of these micro models can further interact with each other via APIs, be it real time or batch. A powerful DS mesh model will be game changing.</p><p id="d802" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mg mh gu mi b mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw mx my mz na nb nc nd gn bk">As a final takeaway, its critical for all of us to think about building a scalable data ecosystem in our organizations, and adopting SODA is one of the powerful ways to go Data being the commodity of these contracts, its critical data definitions are included as part of the APIs definitions. Data definitions include data formats, types, ranges, integrity constraints, recency, and refresh policies, including any derivation logic. Refresh policy refers to when data is added, removed, merged, updated. As a downstream service, it needs to be extremely clear on what to expect from the data received from upstream services.
