The law is tied to an institution's participation in federal student financial aid programs and it applies to most institutions of higher education both public and private. The Clery Act is enforced by the United States Department of Education. <a href="https://www.clerycenter.org/the-clery-act" target="_blank">(Read more)</a></p> <h3><a href="clery_stats.cfm">Clery Act Statistics</a></h3> <p>The <a href="clery_stats.cfm">Clery Act Statistics</a> page list the Clery reportable crimes that occur on campus, in unobstructed public areas immediately adjacent to or running through the campus and at certain non-campus facilities including Greek housing and remote classrooms. The statistics are gathered from campus police or security, local law enforcement and other school officials who have "significant responsibility for student and campus activities."</p> <h3><a href="AnnualSecurityReport.pdf" title="Annual Security Report (ASR)">Annual Security Report (ASR)</a></h3> <p>The <a href="AnnualSecurityReport.pdf" title="Annual Security Report (ASR)">Annual Security Report (ASR)</a> publication is compiled and distributed annually in compliance with the Clery Act and contains crime statistics and statements of security policy. Annually, prior to October 1st, current students and employees are sent the following by US Postal Service, campus mail and/or electronic mail: The Annual Security Report publication; notification that the current edition of the Annual Security Report publication has been posted on the Department of Public Safety web site; or both. Printed copies may be obtained from the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD), Pocomoke Building (007), 7569 Baltimore Ave, College Park, MD 20742 (301-405-3555). The publication and any updates will be posted on-line.</p> <p>As mandated by the Clery Act, the University publishes an annual crime statistics report which is set forth in the <a href="AnnualSecurityReport.pdf" title="Annual Security Report">Annual Security Report</a>. In addition to offenses reported to UMPD, the crime statistics report also includes offense reports obtained from local police agencies, and University offices and officials that are detailed in the <a href="AnnualSecurityReport.pdf" title="Annual Security Report">Annual Security Report</a>. Although students, employees and others are encouraged to report all criminal activity to UMPD and/or local police, reports may also be made to the officials or deans or directors of the offices mentioned in the <a href="AnnualSecurityReport.pdf" title="Annual Security Report">Annual Security Report</a> for statistical reporting and timely warning purposes. The policies, programs and services described are not intended to be a guarantee of individual safety or the protection of personal property.</p> <h3>Timely Warnings</h3> <p>UMPD initiates timely warnings to the campus community of crimes that are considered by the institution to represent a threat to students and employees. Warnings, in the form of <a href="https://alert.umd.edu" title="UMD Alerts">UMD Alerts</a> or <a href="safety_notices.cfm" title="UMD Safety Notices">UMD Safety Notices</a>, are initiated in a manner to aid in the prevention of similar crimes. <a href="https://alert.umd.edu" title="UMD Alerts">UMD Alerts</a> and <a href="safety_notices.cfm" title="UMD Safety Notices">UMD Safety Notices</a> may be posted on the UMPD web site, distributed by electronic mail, physically distributed in the form of a flyer, and/or brought to the attention of appropriate media for information dissemination.</p> <h3><a href="incident_logs.cfm" title="Daily Crime and Incident Logs">Daily Crime and Incident Logs</a></h3> <p>With a few exceptions, a public <a href="incident_logs.cfm" title="Daily Crime and Incident Log">Daily Crime and Incident Log</a> is maintained that records crimes reported to UMPD. The log contains the nature, date, time, general location, and, if known, disposition of crimes. Entries are made and updated within two business days of the report or update. The log is available on-line or may be viewed at UMPD Headquarters. To help enable timely warnings and inclusion of incidents on daily logs, it is strongly encouraged that crimes be reported expeditiously and directly to UMPD.</p> <h3><a href="csa_logs.cfm" title="Campus Security Authority Incident Logs">Campus Security Authority Incident Logs</a></h3> <p>Provides basic information on incident data provided to the University of Maryland Police Department (UMPD) by designated Campus Security Authorities. These incidents may not have been reported to the Police for a response or investigation, but merely for informational purposes. The cases are generally referred to the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct or to the Office of Student Conduct for appropriate action.
