And <i>Pilate</i> *said<MG3004> to them, “Behold<MG2400>, the Man<MG444>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So<MG3767> when<MG3753> the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the officers<MG5257> saw<MG3708> Him, they shouted<MG2905>, saying<MG3004>, “Crucify<MG4717>, crucify<MG4717>!” Pilate<MG4091> *said<MG3004> to them, “Take<MG2983> Him yourselves<MG4771> and crucify<MG4717> <i>Him;</i> for I find<MG2147> no<MG3756> grounds<MG156> for<MG156> charges<MG156> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>His case!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The Jews<MG2453> answered<MG611> him, “We have<MG2192> a law<MG3551>, and by that law<MG3551> He ought<MG3784> to die<MG599>, because<MG3754> He made<MG4160> Himself<MG1438> <i>out to be</i> the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> when<MG3753> Pilate<MG4091> heard<MG191> this<MG3778> statement<MG3056>, he was<MG5399> <i>even</i> more<MG3123> afraid<MG5399>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and he entered<MG1525> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Praetorium<MG4232> again<MG3825> and *said<MG3004> to Jesus<MG2424>, “Where<MG4159> are You from?” But Jesus<MG2424> gave<MG1325> him no<MG3756> answer<MG612>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So<MG3767> Pilate<MG4091> *said<MG3004> to Him, “Are you not speaking<MG2980> to me? Do You not know<MG3609a> that I have<MG2192> authority<MG1849> to release<MG630> You, and I have<MG2192> authority<MG1849> to crucify<MG4717> You?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611> him, “You would have<MG2192> no<MG3756, 3762> authority<MG1849> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>over<MG2596> Me at<MG3762> all<MG3762>, if<MG1487> it had not been<MG1510> given<MG1325> to you from above<MG509>; for this<MG3778> reason<MG1223> the one who handed<MG3860> Me over<MG3860> to you has<MG2192> <i>the</i> greater<MG3173> sin<MG266>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>As a result<MG1537> of this<MG3778>, Pilate<MG4091> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>made<MG2212> efforts<MG2212> to release<MG630> Him; but the Jews<MG2453> shouted<MG2905>, saying<MG3004>, “If<MG1437> you release<MG630> this<MG3778> Man<MG3778>, you are not a friend<MG5384> of Caesar<MG2541>; everyone<MG3956> who makes<MG4160> himself<MG1438> <i>out to be</i> a king<MG935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>opposes<MG483> Caesar<MG2541>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> when Pilate<MG4091> heard<MG191> these<MG3778> words<MG3056>, he brought<MG71> Jesus<MG2424> out, and sat<MG2523> down<MG2523> on the judgment<MG968> seat<MG968> at a place<MG5117> called<MG3004> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>The Pavement<MG3038>—but in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Hebrew<MG1447>, Gabbatha<MG1042>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> it was the day<MG3904> of<MG3904> preparation<MG3904> for the Passover<MG3957>; it was about<MG5613> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>sixth<MG1623> hour<MG5610>. And he *said<MG3004> to the Jews<MG2453>, “Look<MG2396>, your King<MG935>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So<MG3767> they shouted<MG2905>, “Away<MG142> with <i>Him,</i> away<MG142> with <i>Him,</i> crucify<MG4717> Him!” Pilate<MG4091> *said<MG3004> to them, “Shall I crucify<MG4717> your King<MG935>?” The chief<MG749> priests<MG749> answered<MG611>, “We have<MG2192> no<MG3756> king<MG935> except<MG1487, 3361> Caesar<MG2541>.” <p class="hdg">The Crucifixion</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So<MG3767> he then<MG5119> handed<MG3860> Him over<MG3860> to them to be crucified<MG4717>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>They took<MG3880> Jesus<MG2424>, therefore<MG3767>, and He went<MG1831> out<MG1831>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>carrying<MG941> His own<MG1438> cross<MG4716>, to the <i>place</i> called<MG3004> the Place<MG5117> of a Skull<MG2898>, which<MG3739> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Hebrew<MG1447> is called<MG3004>, Golgotha<MG1115>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>There<MG3699> they crucified<MG4717> Him, and with Him two<MG1417> other<MG243> men<MG243>, one on<MG1782> either<MG1782> side<MG1782>, and Jesus<MG2424> in between<MG3319>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Pilate<MG4091> also<MG2532> wrote<MG1125> an inscription<MG5102b> and put<MG5087> it on the cross<MG4716>. It was written<MG1125>: “JESUS<MG2424> THE NAZARENE<MG3480>, THE KING<MG935> OF THE JEWS<MG2453>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> many<MG4183> of the Jews<MG2453> read<MG314> this<MG3778> inscription<MG5102b>, because<MG3754> the place<MG5117> where<MG3699> Jesus<MG2424> was crucified<MG4717> was near<MG1451> the city<MG4172>; and it was written<MG1125> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>Hebrew<MG1447>, Latin<MG4515>, <i>and</i> in Greek<MG1676>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So<MG3767> the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> of the Jews<MG2453> were saying<MG3004> to Pilate<MG4091>, “Do not write<MG1125>, ‘The King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>’; rather<MG235>, <i>write</i> that He said<MG3004>, ‘I am<MG1510> King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Pilate<MG4091> answered<MG611>, “What<MG3739> I have written<MG1125>, I have written<MG1125>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then<MG3767> the soldiers<MG4757>, when<MG3753> they had crucified<MG4717> Jesus<MG2424>, took<MG2983> His outer<MG2440> garments<MG2440> and made<MG4160> four<MG5064> parts<MG3313>: a part<MG3313> to each<MG1538> soldier<MG4757>, and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>tunic<MG5509> <i>also;</i> but the tunic<MG5509> was seamless<MG690a>, woven<MG5307> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>in one<MG3650> piece<MG3650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>So<MG3767> they said<MG3004> to one<MG240> another<MG240>, “Let’s not tear<MG4977> it, but cast<MG2975> lots<MG2975> for it, <i>to decide</i> whose<MG5101> it shall be.” <i>This happened</i> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> the Scripture<MG1124> would be fulfilled<MG4137>: “THEY DIVIDED<MG1266> MY GARMENTS<MG2440> AMONG<MG1266> THEMSELVES, AND THEY CAST<MG906> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>LOTS<MG2819> FOR MY CLOTHING<MG2441>.” Therefore<MG3767> the soldiers<MG4757> did<MG4160> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> beside<MG3844> the cross<MG4716> of Jesus<MG2424> stood<MG2476> His mother<MG3384>, His mother’s<MG3384> sister<MG79>, Mary<MG3137> the <i>wife</i> of Clopas<MG2832>, and Mary<MG3137> Magdalene<MG3094>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>So<MG3767> when Jesus<MG2424> saw<MG3708> His mother<MG3384>, and the disciple<MG3101> whom<MG3739> He loved<MG25> standing<MG3936> nearby<MG3936>, He *said<MG3004> to His mother<MG3384>, “Woman<MG1135>, behold<MG2396>, your son<MG5207>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then<MG1534> He *said<MG3004> to the disciple<MG3101>, “Behold<MG2396>, your mother<MG3384>!” And from that hour<MG5610> the disciple<MG3101> took<MG2983> her into his own<MG2398> <i>household.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>After<MG3326> this<MG3778>, Jesus<MG2424>, knowing<MG3609a> that all<MG3956> things<MG3956> had already<MG2235> been accomplished<MG5055>, in<MG2443> order<MG2443> that<MG2443> the Scripture<MG1124> would be fulfilled<MG5048>, *said<MG3004>, “I am<MG1372> thirsty<MG1372>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>A jar<MG4632> full<MG3324> of sour<MG3690> wine<MG3690> was standing<MG2749> <i>there;</i> so<MG3767> they put<MG4060> a sponge<MG4699> full<MG3324> of the sour<MG3690> wine<MG3690> on <i>a branch of</i> hyssop<MG5301> and brought<MG4374> it <i>up</i> to His mouth<MG4750>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> when<MG3753> Jesus<MG2424> had received<MG2983> the sour<MG3690> wine<MG3690>, He said<MG3004>, “It is finished<MG5055>!” And He bowed<MG2827> His head<MG2776> and gave<MG3860> up<MG3860> His spirit<MG4151>. <p class="hdg">Care of the Body of Jesus</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Now<MG3767> then<MG3767>, since<MG1893> it was the day<MG3904> of<MG3904> preparation<MG3904>, to prevent<MG3363> the bodies<MG4983> from remaining<MG3306> on the cross<MG4716> on the Sabbath<MG4521> (<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>for that Sabbath<MG4521> was a high<MG3173> day<MG2250>), the Jews<MG2453> requested<MG2065> of Pilate<MG4091> that their legs<MG4628> be broken<MG2608a>, and <i>the bodies</i> be taken<MG142> away<MG142>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So<MG3767> the soldiers<MG4757> came<MG2064> and broke<MG2608a> the legs<MG4628> of the first<MG4413> man<MG4413>, and of the other<MG243> who was crucified<MG4957> with Him; <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>but after they came<MG2064> to Jesus<MG2424>, when<MG5613> they saw<MG3708> that He was already<MG2235> dead<MG2348>, they did not break<MG2608a> His legs<MG4628>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Yet<MG235> one<MG1520> of the soldiers<MG4757> pierced<MG3572> His side<MG4125> with a spear<MG3057>, and immediately<MG2117> blood<MG129> and water<MG5204> came<MG1831> out<MG1831>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And he who has seen<MG3708> has testified<MG3140>, and his testimony<MG3141> is true<MG228>; and he knows<MG3609a> that he is telling<MG3004> the truth<MG227>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> you also<MG2532> may believe<MG4100>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>For these<MG3778> things<MG3778> took<MG1096> place<MG1096> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> the Scripture<MG1124> would be fulfilled<MG4137>: “NOT A BONE<MG3747> OF HIM SHALL BE <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>BROKEN<MG4937>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And again<MG3825> another<MG2087> Scripture<MG1124> says<MG3004>, “THEY WILL LOOK<MG3708> AT HIM WHOM<MG3739> THEY PIERCED<MG1574>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> after<MG3326> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> Joseph<MG2501> of Arimathea<MG707>, being<MG1510> a disciple<MG3101> of Jesus<MG2424>, but a secret<MG2928> <i>one</i> for fear<MG5401> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Jews<MG2453>, requested<MG2065> of Pilate<MG4091> that he might take<MG142> away<MG142> the body<MG4983> of Jesus<MG2424>; and Pilate<MG4091> granted<MG2010> permission<MG2010>.
