<a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/06/07/todays-electric-vehicle-market-slow-growth-in-u-s-faster-in-china-europe/">almost two million electric vehicles (EVs)</a> were on the road in the United States alone, a number that’s grown more than three-fold since 2016.</p>  <p dir="ltr">It’s remarkable how far the industry has come in just a bit more than a decade. It seems like everywhere you turn there’s an EV on the street and a growing charging network across the country makes it a more compelling purchase than ever before. Of course, Tesla remains the matching standard, but automakers have come a long way and the offerings are fiercely competitive.</p>  <p dir="ltr">The following also includes some info on newer models we weren’t able to drive by press date, but deserved a mention nonetheless. </p>  <hr> <h2 style="text-align:center">Top Electric Cars Set to Steal the Show in 2022</h2>  <hr> <h3>Best Urban EV: VW ID.4</h3>  <div class="articleImg"><figure data-zmg-card-id="76521" data-zmg-image-id="103315" data-zmg-image-credit=""><img alt="" src="https://luna-askmen-images.askmen.com/home_auto/auto/askmen_article_embed_5.png"></figure></div>  <p dir="ltr">VW officially denotes the ID.4 as an SUV, but it's better to call it an elevated wagon. This isn’t an EV you’re going to take off-road, but it is damn near the perfect city cruiser or road trip weekender. </p>  <p dir="ltr">It has enough power to haul its 4,500+ pound load while feeling a little grippy in the corners. There’s also the temperamental “gesture control” where occupants can control the screen with a wave of the hand. The short of it: The cabin feels tight and figured out with fun light accents and some other quirky features that feel right at home in das Auto. </p>  <p dir="ltr">You’re seeing more and more of these pop up around town simply because it's an easy car to drive and there’s a lot of functionality built into the overall experience. It’s clean, crisp and the ideal option if you’re looking for sensibility with enough spunk for the weekends. </p>  <p dir="ltr"><strong>From <a class="zdcse-buybtn" href="http://www.vw.com/en/models/id-4.html">$39,995</a></strong></p>  <h3>Most Practical EV: Polestar 2</h3>  <div class="articleImg"><figure data-zmg-card-id="76522" data-zmg-image-id="103316" data-zmg-image-credit=""><img alt="Volvo" src="https://luna-askmen-images.askmen.com/home_auto/auto/askmen_article_embed_6.png"></figure></div>  <p dir="ltr">Volvo’s high-performance engineering arm has put out some great cars over the last decade and even though Polestar spun off into “independence” in 2017, Volvo still has at least one spec Polestar edition on tap for 2022. </p>  <p dir="ltr">If you’re expecting a speedy and fun ride, you might be disappointed. The Polestar 2 is a highly-practical electric sedan, with an emphasis on practicality. It’s built to move at reasonable speeds, and the everyday driver will probably do just fine, but it’s just missing that bridge to fun that enthusiasts expect from the Polestar name. In terms of entry-point luxury, it does offer plenty of bang for the buck, however. </p>  <p dir="ltr"><strong>From <a class="zdcse-buybtn" href="http://www.polestar.com/us/polestar-2/">$45,900</a></strong></p>  <h3>Most Fun EV: Mustang MACH-E</h3>  <div class="articleImg"><figure data-zmg-card-id="76523" data-zmg-image-id="103317" data-zmg-image-credit=""><img alt="Ford" src="https://luna-askmen-images.askmen.com/home_auto/auto/askmen_article_embed_3.png"></figure></div>  <p dir="ltr">Experiences with Ford have been marginal (to say the least), and there’s been a distinctive lack of personality for a long time. </p>  <p dir="ltr">The Mach-E changed everything. It’s tight, responsive and near the perfect size for a small family or couple needing flexibility to carry gear without the expanse of an SUV. Perhaps next to a Tesla, it’s the most drive-ready EV with no learning curve and a sportiness that is more than partially deserving of the galloping horse badge. </p>  <p dir="ltr">The options get pricey, but you’ll want to get the extended range battery pack and AWD. Both turn the Mach-E into a machine of real capability. In any case, before making your final decision, you’ll want to drive one of these. </p>  <p dir="ltr"><strong>From <a class="zdcse-buybtn" href="http://www.ford.com/suvs/mach-e/">$42,895</a></strong></p>  <h3>The Stalwart: Nissan Leaf</h3>  <div class="articleImg"><figure data-zmg-card-id="76524" data-zmg-image-id="103318" data-zmg-image-credit=""><img alt="" src="https://luna-askmen-images.askmen.com/home_auto/auto/askmen_article_embed_4.png"></figure></div>  <p dir="ltr">When the Leaf was launched at the end of 2010, it was novel and exciting as one of the first mass-market EVs. It’s almost remarkable that in just over a decade, the car still looks largely the same at first glance — and it seems Nissan took that same attitude inside for the 2022 edition. </p>  <p dir="ltr">If you’re looking for basic EV transportation in and around the city, you’ll probably be fine with the spritely little Leaf. However, it’s fair to say that many buyers considering electric want more personality and gumption with the price of admission, and with that, the Leaf falls well short. </p>  <p dir="ltr">Nissan’s flagship EV feels stuck in the mid-2010s with an antiquated infotainment system and lower-tier interior touches that haven’t aged well. There’s an eye-catching amount of plastic and the singular center gear knob/shifting situation is clunky and just not modern. </p>  <p dir="ltr">The plucky four-seater (five if you have a small and willing passenger) does offer a bit of pep at full throttle (and some value sub-$30k), but that’s largely all the excitement on tap here. </p>  <p dir="ltr"><strong>From <a class="zdcse-buybtn" href="http://www.nissanusa.com/vehicles/electric-cars/leaf.html">$27,400</a></strong></p>  <hr> <h2 style="text-align:center">Honorable Electric Car Mentions</h2>  <hr> <h3>The Luxury Option: Audi e-tron<strong> </strong></h3>  <p dir="ltr">The e-tron is a prime example of how to balance luxury in the EV space. With two options (e-tron and Sportback), Audi released two solid mid-level SUVs is what’s sure to become the next most competitive sector of the EV market. There are several different trim levels and the options can add up quickly. Among them, the tow package add-on for a 4,000 lb. towing capacity is worthwhile, and makes a compelling argument for the regular e-tron as a short-haul weekender (but we’d like to see the range expand past 218 miles).</p>  <p dir="ltr">Plus, with the e-tron GT Sport sedan on the way, there’s a lot to be optimistic about from the German marque. </p>  <p dir="ltr"><strong>From <a class="zdcse-buybtn" href="https://www.audiusa.com/us/web/en/models/e-tron/e-tron/2022/overview.html">$66,995</a></strong></p>  <h3>An Electric Truck for the Masses: Rivian R1T</h3>  <p dir="ltr">You haven’t seen many Rivians on the road yet, but there’s a good chance that’s about to change. Americans are hungry for pickup trucks and the top-out range of 314 miles for one of the R1T options makes it a serious contender.</p>  <p dir="ltr">A towing capacity of 11,000 lbs. is really competitive compared to its gas-guzzling counterparts and it’s going to be interesting to watch how it stacks up against the forthcoming F-150 Lightning. That’s not to say it’s only going to be around for a bit over a decade, but rather it feels young and connected to a potential next generation of EV buyers.</p>  <p dir="ltr">The EV6 looks like a fun and creative crossover with solid range (300 miles) and an AWD option. Kia hasn’t announced pricing, but it should fall right in line in the mid-$40k range to compete with a well-equipped ID.4 or lower-level Mach-E.</p>  <p dir="ltr"><strong>Pricing <a
